Chapter 466: Chapter 251 Distant News_1
Qian Yixiu went to visit Duo Duo in the main house. Duo Duo was still lying in bed, her eyes red and swollen from crying. She hadn’t touched a drop of water from morning until night.
Children of ancient times really were precocious, as the little Lolita seemed to be suffering from a broken heart.
Upon seeing Qian Yixiu arrive, Duo Duo pouted and called out, "Embroidered older sister..." Unable to control herself, her tears started to flow again.
Qian Yixiu didn’t know how to comfort her and used a handkerchief to wipe her tears. She said, "Duo Duo, please don’t be sad anymore. Sometimes what you lose isn’t your loss but theirs."
This phrase seemed to be quite popular in her previous life as a universal consolation.
"My grandma said that the young man was talented and handsome, with a good family background. Missing out on such a good match means I won’t likely encounter another," Duo Duo said before bursting into tears again.
Lady Xu, who was nearby, also cried, appearing even more distressed than Duo Duo. It seemed everyone in the main house had favored the match, which Lady Tang had disrupted; no wonder even Lady Wang, who was always dignified, couldn’t hold back her tears.
Qian Yixiu advised, "That’s not necessarily true; the world is very large. You’re still so young, just wait, and maybe you will come across someone even better. Look at Aunt Ting, she’s from such a good family, and she refused a marriage proposal, thinking she might find a better match..."
Qian Manting was a girl with aspirations. Hearing that a relative who was a fourth rank officer in the provincial city had sought her hand in marriage, she wasn’t interested. She believed that her cousin, Qian Manjiang, still had higher prospects, and she had the capital and possibility to marry into a true official family. This infuriated Qian Sigui and Lady Wong, but they were powerless against her.
Lady Xu invited Qian Yixiu to stay for dinner. Qian Yixiu had always had Duo Duo’s trust, and her words carried weight. After some consolation, Duo Duo was no longer as heartbroken and hopeless as before, even getting up to eat a bowl of meatball soup.
The early winter night was bitterly cold, the moonless sky only sparingly sprinkled with lonely stars twinkling coldly, intensifying the chill. As Qian Yixiu and Zi Zhu walked back home, they saw that the second household was still brightly lit, faintly hearing Old Man Qian’s booming voice and Lady Tang’s crying from within; it seemed the issue with Lady Tang had yet to be resolved.
Qian Yixiu felt it was best to send Lady Tang away during this time. The woman was both bad and stupid, without a moral baseline, like a time bomb that could explode at any moment.
When they reached the entrance of the village, they saw only a faint light shining through a small window of Qian Mandua’s house. The courtyard door was not shut, clattering in the cold wind.
Leading Zi Zhu into the yard, Qian Yixiu found even the house door wide open, with Li Ahcao’s coughing occasionally breaking the silence.
Once inside the house, which was as cold as outside, they saw Li Ahcao huddled under the blankets; Qian Mandua and Li Ahcai were not at home.
Qian Yixiu closed the door and approached to ask, "Ah Cao, where are your mother and brother?"
Li Ahcao poked her head out from the blanket, replying, "They’ve gone to my grandfather’s house." The little Lolita’s bandaged head was disheveled, with sleep in her eyes.
"Have you eaten?" Qian Yixiu asked further.
"Auntie Wang made me chicken noodle soup for lunch," Li Ahcao answered.
So she hadn’t had dinner yet. Having a unfocused and clueless mother like Qian Mandua was truly a sorrow. Sighing, Qian Yixiu and Zi Zhu went to the kitchen and found a bowl of chicken soup and some chunks of chicken left over. They then made a bowl of dough drop soup.
After watching her finish her meal and washing her face, Qian Yixiu gently untangled her hair. Then she had her get up to secure the door so it was warm inside and safe from any trouble.
After leaving the courtyard, Qian Yixiu turned back to close the gate properly, picking up a small stick from the ground to wedge it in place.
The next day, Cheng Yue and her children went to the main house for a meal. Qian Sangui didn’t get up, Lady Wu said he was tired from the day before.
Lady Tang was ultimately divorced. This time, Old Man Qian ignored the pleas of Qian Manhe, Qian Mandua, and others, insisting that Qian Ergui divorce Lady Tang. The main house and the third house contributed significantly to this outcome. Lady Wu had long despised Lady Tang, and Lady Wang wanted nothing more than to be rid of her; Qian Dagui and Qian Sangui tacitly waited for these two to recount the many wrongdoings Lady Tang had committed over the years.
Not only was Old Man Qian increasingly alarmed as he listened, even Qian Ergui felt that this malicious woman could not be kept any longer, lest one day she brought ruin to the whole family. For the sake of his sons and grandsons, she had to be divorced.
Considering that Lady Tang had given birth to three children, especially Qian Manhe and his two sons, whom everyone liked, they all agreed that Lady Tang should have a way out.
Old, lame, lazy, with a bad reputation and a foul mouth, Lady Tang surely wouldn’t survive returning to her own family. So, the second house decided to fund the construction of a small courtyard near her family’s place in Darong Village, and even hire someone to cook and do chores for her every day. Qian Manhe would bear the costs of her living expenses. However, she was forbidden from coming to Huaxi Village. Should she dare to come, all her benefits would be revoked.
