Chapter 446: Chapter 243 Who is He_1

Qian Yixiu saw that her beloved mother was still engrossed in her private world with her father, a world to which the thick letter in her hand had not yet been introduced. Left with no choice, she apologized on behalf of her dear father to her aunt, "Auntie, please don’t be angry anymore. My father was negligent this time. Let granny write him a letter to scold him. Let my father write a longer letter to you next time, and he’ll buy you a floral headscarf, too."

Stubbornly, Qian Manxia added, "Brother also said he would take me to Capital City for a visit, to see the grand gates of the Palace."

Before Qian Yixiu could speak, Wan Dazhong interjected, "Such matters should be handled by your husband, me. Why set your sights on your uncle doing it? Uncle is now fully intent on taking his wife and children to Capital City for a visit. You and Fangfang can be taken care of by me..."

The words of Wan Dazhong tickled Qian Manxia into laughter, and the group then inquired about Qian Manjiang’s recent situation.

Hua Qiang answered every question, saying General Qian, save for missing home, was doing well in all aspects and had not yet been sent to the front lines. He also mentioned that Fan Erhei was killed by enemy archers in his first battle, and they hadn’t heard news from anyone else yet—no news was considered good news for now.

Afterward, Qian Sangui told Hua Qiang to go home to rest and to come to Guiyuan early the next morning for an important task. Now that Huang Hua was no longer needed to deliver letters, Hua Qiang would take the completed blueprint directly to the border once it was ready. It would be best for him to see the actual cannon and to fully understand its structure.

Before leaving, Cheng Yue seemed to finally come back to her senses. She held her young aunt’s hand, urging her not to be angry, apologized on behalf of Brother Jiang, and promised to make a summer dress for Fangfang herself.

After repeated disassembly and scrutiny by the artisans and the father-son team of Wan Dazhong, the blueprints for the cannon’s plan and structure were finally completed on May 14th. Wan Erniu drew them himself with incredible precision—every part was marked with measurements, and special notes were made regarding the materials. The cannonballs’ plan and materials were also drawn out and annotated thoroughly.

Even Qian Yixiu, who had been studying for sixteen years, admitted she couldn’t match that level of drawing and praised Wan Erniu, "Grandpa Wan, you’re truly skilled."

Wan Erniu humbly replied, "When I served as a Protector, I learned drafting from my master." He had learned how to draw maps when he followed Prince Ning into battle.

Qian Yixiu paid the artisans fifty taels of silver each for their work, then asked them to return home for now, saying they would be contacted again if needed in the future.

On the evening of May 15th, Qian Sangui and others carefully wrapped the blueprints in oiled paper, and together with a pocket watch, a telescope, some dried meat, several sets of undergarments and shoes, and a few letters, packed them into a parcel. These were gifts and letters for Qian Manjiang. Qian Mandua also wrote a letter to Li Shuanzi, including some clothes and two pounds of pastries, and several village families had also sent letters for their kin. It wasn’t that they didn’t want to send more items, but Hua Qiang simply couldn’t carry everything.

Early the next morning, Hua Qiang would head north with the blueprints, letters, and packages.

After sending off Hua Qiang, Guiyuan returned to its usual tranquility.

Time flew by, and by July, golden lotuses seized the few remaining days to bloom in their splendor.

Ming Wa and Jingjing were already half a year old and had grown beautifully. Especially Jingjing, who inherited everything from Cheng Yue—the delicate features, the ethereal temperament, and the natural haughtiness.

In Old woman Qian’s mouth, that wasn’t haughtiness; it was the annoying selectiveness of recognizing people.

On the fifth of July, Qian Yixiu visited Linfeng Courtyard to see Tiaotiao and her son first before going down from school. Last month, Tiaotiao had given birth to a little male dog, as handsome as his parents, named Shan Dian by Qian Yijin.

In Linfeng Courtyard, White Wolf and Dashan were leisurely enjoying the shade under a tree. Benben and Tiaotiao were sprawled beneath the eaves, and Shan Dian was still suckling from Tiaotiao’s belly. Ever since Tiaotiao birthed Yin Feng, the House of Animals had not ventured into the mountains again.

Qian Yixiu went over to cuddle with Shan Dian, affectionately kissing him now and then. The little fellow, not yet with open eyes, hummed, occasionally sticking out a small pink tongue to lick his master’s hand, tickling Qian Yixiu into giggles.

Tiaotiao was a good mother. Seeing that her master loved her baby so much, and her baby was so adorable, she happily scratched her ears and cheeks. This classic move of Monkey Brother had been learned by both Benben and Tiaotiao.

After playing with Shan Dian for a while and talking to his grandparents and parents, Qian Yixiu left Linfeng Courtyard. She didn’t head straight back to Wangjiang Building but went to collect some things at Lianxiang Water Pavilion instead.

Bai Zhu was already waiting there. Taking the straw hat from her, Qian Yixiu put it on, then led Bai Zhu, who carried a basket, out of the inner courtyard.

Ming Wa was a bit feverish, had dry stools, and excessive eye discharge. Qian Yixiu recalled that in her previous life, when her younger brother had similar symptoms, her mother would have her go to the fields to pick some Wick Grass to boil in water, which after drinking, would alleviate the condition. Having spotted this herb previously in the wilderness, she decided to gather some. While it would be for her brother’s relief, the family could also partake to reduce heat and benefit the eyes.
