Chapter 410: Chapter 229: Restoring Identity_3

Wan Dazhong, leading Qian Manxia and Sister Fang, also hurried over. Qian Manxia had been so agitated upon hearing the news that she had cried at home. After arriving, she grabbed Lady Wu and cried again.

Wan Dazhong was elated as well. However, for some reason, the master hadn’t sent a letter concerning the retrieval of the young master, so it seemed they must continue to conceal their identities and protect the young master.

Lady Wang chuckled and consoled Qian Manxia, "Madam Xia, stop crying. If you cry too much, your milk will dry up, and that wouldn’t be good for Sister Fang. Manjiang has become a high official; this is a great joy. From now on, not only has the Qian family become an official family, but Miss Qian’s back is straighter than ever."

Lady Tang also laughed heartily, "Exactly! Let’s see which in-laws dare to bully the girls of the Qian family in the future. If they dare, we’ll have the Master County Magistrate throw them in jail. The position Manjiang holds is very high, even bigger than the Master County Magistrate. I heard he’s specially responsible for protecting the Emperor."

Old man Qian, who was nearby, scolded, "You’re talking rubbish. If you dare spout such nonsense outside, I’ll have your husband divorce you on the spot. My grandson Manjiang has finally reached this step with great difficulty, and I won’t allow your foolish babbling to ruin his reputation." He then told everyone in the room, "Listen up, though our Qian family has become an official family, we must not use Manjiang’s influence to oppress the common folk and bring disaster upon him."

Upon hearing Lady Tang’s words, Qian Sangui frowned and said, "Although Manjiang has become a Martial Official of the fifth rank, he is only a Martial Official; his actual power is much less than the Master County Magistrate. Don’t ever repeat those words outside. If they really reach the Master County Magistrate’s ears, it wouldn’t be good. Moreover, what Father said is correct – our Qian family cannot use Manjiang’s influence to exploit our neighbors. If any of you dare to do such things, I will be the first to disagree."

Qian Manhe quickly added with a smile, "Father, rest assured, third uncle, rest assured. We’re all delighted that Brother Manjiang has become a high official, and we will be even more cautious with our words and actions, not bringing him any trouble."

The men of the Qian family all nodded, showing their resolve. Old man Qian then turned to Qian Ergui and said, "Keep an eye on your wife; if she continues to spout nonsense, divorce her. Now that our family has become official, if you divorce her, plenty of young maidens will want to marry you. Don’t be so shortsighted to think that there are no other women in the world besides her."

Qian Ergui’s face turned red with embarrassment, and Lady Tang angrily retorted, "What is father-in-law saying? People say that one should not cast aside their wife of humble beginnings. What kind of reason is it for a grandson to become a high official, and for the grandfather to tell his son to divorce his wife? If you spread such words, others will say that the Qian family uses its power to bully others. Father-in-law is the one who would bring disaster upon Manjiang."

Old man Qian’s face turned beet red with anger, yet he couldn’t find the words to respond. Wanting to throw his tobacco pipe at her in frustration but remembering that it was the Jade Mouth Tobacco Pipe his grandson Manjiang had bought for him, he turned to Old woman Qian and raged, "If she keeps blabbering like that, beat her to death with a cane!"

Upon hearing this, Old woman Qian raised her cane as if to strike, and Lady Tang hurriedly dodged to the side in fear. Qian Manhe also shouted, "Mother, stop talking. Every word you say is unpleasant."

The evening meal was served in the main courtyard, with two large tables set up. Qian Sangui had the servants bring out the iron-pot liquor, and though he couldn’t drink much, he felt happy just watching others drink.

Yixiu persuaded Cheng Yue to join them as well; after all, she had to show her pregnant belly to everyone to prevent any rumors from spreading after the child was born.

Cheng Yue, out of happiness, heeded her daughter’s advice and joined the main courtyard. Knowing her dislike for crowds, Yixiu had a small table set up in a side room where Cheng Yue dined with Yixiu and Qian Manxia.

Cheng Yue was wearing an imperial-colored Embroidered twine lotus cotton robe with a set of Ruby inlaid headdresses, and her makeup was lightly done. Her belly was now noticeably large, and her face looked even more radiant.

She only nodded to Old man Qian and his wife and Qian Sangui and his wife, and then Yixiu led her into the side room.

Lady Wang smiled and said, "Manjiang’s wife is indeed fortunate; one can tell she has the appearance of a young mistress at first glance." Turning to Lady Wu, she continued, "Sister-in-law is also fortunate. Once Manjiang secures you an Imperial decree, you’ll be a Madam. Not just in Huaxi Village, but even in Erliu Town, you’ll be unmatched."

Lady Wu was pleased to hear this and laughed, "I’ll take that as a good omen from my elder sister-in-law. Manjiang did mention that once he can restore his identity, he’ll secure Imperial decrees for me and Yueyue."

Seeing Old woman Qian’s envy, Yijin tugged at her, saying, "Great-grandma, stay healthy. When I become an official, I’ll secure an Imperial decree just for you."
