Chapter 394: Chapter 223 Good In-Laws_1
Yixiu was talking with Duo Duo and Jin Wawa when Qian Mandua, together with her son Li Ahcai, happened to pass by on their way back from a meal at her parents’ house.
It had been a long time since she had seen Yixiu, so she quickened her pace, came over, and, holding onto Yixiu’s hand with a smile, she said, "Your grandparents are on that cart too, right? Why didn’t you drop by my parents’ place when you passed by our house?"
Strands of Qian Mandua’s hair had fallen loose and dangled by her ears, greasy and unwashed for days. Her clothes were filthy and wrinkled, the sweat stench was unbearable. Although the village women weren’t as particular as those in the city, the vast majority of young women still kept themselves clean, and their clothes might bear patches, and they might have mud on them after working in the fields, but they certainly wouldn’t go without washing their clothes or hair for many days in the summer. Lazy daughters-in-law like Qian Mandua were truly few and far between.
Twelve-year-old Li Ahcai was also filthy, with snot hanging around his nose despite his age.
Yixiu didn’t just frown; she also wrinkled her nose, freed her hand, and said, "My grandfather was feeling sleepy and needed to go home to rest."
Qian Mandua laughed again and said, "Yixiu, my mother caused a scene at your house previously because she was instigated by the Qian’s first wife. They didn’t send the Qian’s first wife back to her parents’ home, so why did they send my mother back? Speak to your grandparents on my behalf and ask them to let my mother come home sooner."
Yixiu said, "Why would they listen to a child like me? You should be the one to talk to them."
Hearing Qian Mandua cursing her own grandmother, Duo Duo raised her voice and retorted, "My grandma did do something wrong, but not as bad as the second wife who went straight to the third branch to scold Grandfather. She deserved to be sent back to her parents’ home."
Qian Mandua’s face darkened as she cursed, "You wretched girl, how dare you speak like that about your elders? Clearly, it’s your grandma who is the worst and the one who most deserves to be sent back."
Duo Duo retorted, "It’s the second wife who is the worst person."
Li Ahcai was not pleased; with a slap, he pushed Duo Duo to the ground and kicked her twice, cursing viciously, "If you dare to insult my grandmother again, I’ll kick you to death."
Duo Duo immediately burst into tears, and Jin Wawa was scared into crying as well.
Although Yixiu did not particularly like Qian’s first wife, she had always been fond of Duo Duo. Especially when she recalled how, several years ago when she was bullied by Li Ahcai, Duo Duo, despite being so young, had known to stand by her side. She cried out in a sharp voice, "Li Ahcai, how can you, being so big, bully a girl like that?"
Seeing Li Ahcai still wanting to hit her, Yixiu shouted, "Go on and hit me, see if Uncle Huanghua from my house doesn’t beat you to a pulp, and Dashan, let it come bite you."
Li Ahcai became somewhat afraid.
As Qian Mandua saw more onlookers gathering, she grabbed Li Ahcai and tried to leave. Naturally, the villagers would side with their own, and they blocked their way, refusing to let them leave, accusing the mother and son of using their size to bully others. Some people even went to the Qian’s first wife to call for help.
Soon enough, Qian Dagui and Lady Wang came running over. They scolded Qian Mandua, and Lady Wang also yanked Li Ahcai’s ear. Qian Ergui, having heard the commotion, came as well and after offering apologies, took the two away.
As the crowd slowly dispersed, Lady Wang said to Yixiu with a smile, "Thank you, Yixiu. The first wife has always known you’re a good child and get along best with Duo Duo. Come, let’s go home and play, the first wife will make you some pickled lotus root starch to eat."
Yixiu shook her head and said, "No thanks, I have some at home," and was about to turn back home.
Lady Wang laughed and said, "What’s at your home is yours, what’s at the first wife’s home is hers. Look at the sun now, it’s so strong, you’ve sweated so much, be careful not to get heatstroke. Come rest at the first wife’s home first, when the sun’s not so hot later on, then go back."
Duo Duo and Jin Wawa each took one of her hands and said, "Sister Embroidered, come rest at our house, eat the pickled lotus root starch then go."
Yixiu shook her head and replied, "No thanks, my grandfather is in a bad mood, I need to go home and cheer him up."
Hearing her say this, Lady Wang could only say softly, "When you get back, help the first wife to apologize to your grandfather. The first wife was blinded by foolishness before, she has always remembered how kind your grandfather has been to our family. We went to Guiyuan several times to see your grandfather, but Butler Cai always said he was not well and didn’t see visitors. Once he is feeling better, the elder elder and the first wife will go apologize to him."
Yixiu nodded, and Duo Duo led Jin Wawa in sending her off to the western edge of the village. She saw the hopeful look in Duo Duo’s eyes but still did not invite him and his sister to her home for a visit.
Walking alone on the path, the afternoon sun was blistering, wilting the flowers and grasses on the barren plains, it also made it difficult for her to keep her eyes open.
She was still thinking about Lady Wang’s words; Lady Wang really knew how to humble herself and bow down even in front of a younger person; it was tough on her.
