Chapter 387: Chapter 220 My daughter is my little cotton-padded jacket_3

They arrived at the Guiyuan Door and knocked; Old man Cai recognized their presence and opened the door.

Auntie Manxia also joined the fray to wish Manjiang farewell, but unable to outdo Old woman Qian and Lady Wu, she could only clutch a piece of her brother’s coat with eyes red from crying, stirring a pang of jealousy in Wan Dazhong.

If Old woman Qian wasn’t present, no one could outstrip Cheng Yue. But Old woman Qian was such an imposing figure in Cheng Yue’s heart that she shrank frightened to one side upon her arrival.

Manjiang was surrounded by family, with two old women on either side and a young boy at his feet. In fact, he would have liked for the young girl to sit on his other leg, but she hadn’t come closer.

After dinner, the women began to cry because Manjiang would be leaving early the next morning. To keep things secret, the elderly couple and Manxia were unable to see him off. Wan Dazhong would come with a cart to fetch him, under the pretext that Qian Sangui was unwell and needed to be taken to the county’s Baohe Hall for treatment.

Old woman Qian, Lady Wu, and Manxia all clung to Manjiang and wept, Yijin also hugging him and shedding tears. Cheng Yue sat to the side, looking at Manjiang and crying a ying-ying sound, her little nose red, shattering Manjiang’s heart, yet he couldn’t offer her solace in public.

Yixiu kept consoling her mother, assuring her that Dad would be back soon and then the family would be together forever.

Cheng Yue shook her head in disbelief, weeping, "Once dad leaves, he never seems to come home; mom waits for him with such hardship. He’s only been back a short while and now he’s leaving again. Who knows when he’ll return this time. I’m afraid, afraid that by the time he comes back again, mom will have grown old..."

Without mentioning the tender moments between Manjiang and Cheng Yue after everyone else had gone, or how Manjiang comforted his young wife, let’s talk about Yixiu, whose heart was also uneasy. Although her time with her younger dad wasn’t long, she didn’t see him as the irresponsible man she had imagined. Some of his actions were thoughtless, yes, but young people often make mistakes.

What mattered most was that the family needed him, and her mother needed him.

She didn’t sleep well that night, thinking about how throughout history, in every culture, few spies ever met a good end—most died obscure, unceremonious deaths.

She didn’t want her Ghost Daddy to actually die, for the family’s sake, and especially for her mother.

While absorbed in thought, she heard a scratching noise at the window, followed by the sound of someone climbing through, along with Monkey Brother’s cries.

She sat up, and in his anxiety, Monkey Brother leaped onto her bed. Yixiu, agitated, pushed him towards the floor, "Ew, get down, you’re too dirty."

Monkey Brother ignored her and kept gesturing and calling out, indicating that the tall man who loitered around the Capital City Splendid Shop had returned and was staying at the Wangjiang Building.

Yixiu said, "Don’t make a fuss; that man is my dad."

Monkey Brother, shocked, suddenly covered his mouth with his hand; it was too unbelievable!

As dawn was just breaking, Yixiu got up and instructed Monkey Brother to pluck some peaches with tips turning red from the highest branches. Monkey Brother was reluctant; it had been eyeing those peaches, eagerly waiting for them to ripen.

Yixiu coaxed him, "Fine, fine, keep one for you and Monkey Sister, but pick the rest."

Hearing this, Monkey Brother went ahead and plucked six peaches in total.

Yixiu took the peaches and headed to the Wangjiang Building. The young lad hadn’t gone yet. Manjiang and Cheng Yue were already up, with Cheng Yue clinging to Manjiang’s shoulders and crying.

Yixiu walked straight up, handing Manjiang the small dagger from Liang Zechong and the folding fan from Prince Consort Pan. She said, "This was given to me by Sir Liang, and this by Prince Consort Pan. If you run into any danger, you might seek them out; perhaps they can help you escape trouble."

She whispered softly, "If the person you report to is opposing Prince Ning, you must find a way to escape. I’ve heard Master Beikong say inadvertently that this world will eventually belong to Prince Ning."

She didn’t dare mention Ma Mian, so she invoked the Demi Immortal instead.

Upon hearing his daughter’s last comment, Manjiang felt an overwhelming joy. Everyone called Master Bei Kong an Old Fairy, and if he said something, it had to be true. To think, he had chosen the right side. If this were the case, he felt an even stronger need to make his mark.

Holding the two items his daughter had given him, he felt his heart warm, thinking that his daughter was indeed like a little wadded coat to him, speaking words so true.

He laughed and handed the fan back to Yixiu, "Thank you, my girl. I’ll take the dagger; perhaps I might indeed require Sir Liang’s help in the future. I won’t take the fan from Prince Consort Pan, though; as a soldier, it’s unlikely I’ll need his help."

Yixiu didn’t take it back, suggesting, "As the saying goes, cats have their paths and rats have their alleyways. Prince Consort Pan has extensive connections; he might be able to help you in ways you never know."

Then she handed him the peaches and told him when he could eat them.
