Chapter 385: Chapter 220 My daughter is my little cotton-padded jacket_1
Qian Manjiang tossed and turned until the middle of the night, tidying up his already sleeping young wife before he himself went downstairs for a quick wash, then returned to bed and fell into a deep sleep. He felt as though he had not slept for long when he heard knocking and shouting, "Mom, Mom, open the door, your son misses you."
He tilted his head, kissed his little wife, and continued to hold her as he slept. He thought the shouting was from next door’s Old Wang’s son, in the military housing area there were family members who temporarily visited, and Old Wang’s wife had brought their son to see Old Wang in the barracks just last month.
In his groggy state, he was somewhat puzzled; didn’t that dark-skinned boy speak with a Jiaodong accent? Why had it changed to a Ji’an accent now?
Living on the ground floor, Qian Xiaoyu got up to open the door, seeing that it was just starting to get light outside, and was somewhat at a loss for words. In a low voice, she asked, "Young master, why have you come so early again? It’s not even fully light outside."
Qian Yeejin walked in and said, "I want to spend more time with my father." With that, he started heading upstairs.
Qian Xiaoyu stopped him, saying, "Young master, just play downstairs for a bit, can you? Your eldest uncle and your aunt went to sleep quite late yesterday and are still not awake."
Qian Yeejin sidestepped her, saying, "We left so early yesterday; they didn’t sleep late at all." Then he rushed upstairs, calling out, "Dad, Dad, your son is here."
It was the "son" that truly awoke Qian Manjiang, who quickly got up and started dressing while stopping Qian Yeejin from entering, "Jinwa, don’t come in. Just wait at the door; Daddy will be right out."
Qian Yeejin, who had intended to push the door open, had no choice but to stand at the doorway upon hearing his father’s words.
After guiding Qian Yeejin downstairs and finishing their ablutions, Qian Manjiang finally came to his senses. He said to Qian Yeejin, "Jinwa, go to the Water Pavilion and call your sister over. The three of us can have a good chat before the others arrive."
Since his return, aside from being questioned by his daughter, he hadn’t had a proper conversation.
Qian Yeejin smiled and said, "Dad, wait for me, I’ll go get my sister right away."
Arriving at Lianxiang Water Pavilion, Qian Yeejin knocked on the door, saying, "Sister, open the door, your brother is here to see you."
Qian Yixiu was dreaming of Duke Zhou and was woken by Qian Yeejin. She looked at the window to see it was still not fully light outside, dim and grey. She wondered what ailed the young boy to disturb her so early. Yawning, she sat up and pulled her clothes on without opening her eyes.
Bai Zhu had already opened the door and invited Qian Yeejin in.
Qian Yixiu, not pleased, said, "If you wanted to see me, you should have come later. You’ve interrupted my good dream."
Qian Yeejin waved Bai Zhu away with his hand, then spoke quietly, "Dad wants you to come over too; the three of us can have a good chat before they arrive." The young boy was very happy that Dad treated him and his sister differently.
Qian Yixiu finally woke up fully, understanding that the young boy was shamelessly seeking favor again.
Upon leaving, the morning breeze mixed with the scent of peaches hit her full in the face, waking Qian Yixiu completely. Instead of heading straight, she pulled Qian Yeejin aside to the side of the Water Pavilion, and saw the peach trees that had branches of Cave Sky Pool Golden Honey Peaches grafted onto them were bearing fruit.
As the grafting had only been done last year, they didn’t dare let too many fruits hang on the trees, lest it affect the trees. As a result, each tree only had a dozen or so peaches, most of which were still green, with just a few tips turning gold and red. Those small red spots stood out even more amid the green leaves and peaches.
Qian Yeejin sniffed and said, "It smells so good; these Golden Honey Peaches are much more fragrant than other peaches."
Qian Yixiu nodded and said, "Right, the peaches that are about to ripen, I’ll pick them all for Dad to take tomorrow."
Qian Manjiang, watching from the window, saw his children coming hand in hand, their steps light, faces beaming with joy and laughter floating intermittently through the window. A peculiar feeling suddenly surged in his heart, thinking that his daughter shouldn’t be so intimate with the young master.
His daughter was as beautiful as Yueyue, and he could only imagine how breathtakingly beautiful she would become in a few years.
Though he was loyal to Prince Ning, he was also painfully aware of the Royal Family’s lack of affection. The women of The Royal Family might seem enviable, but their lives were not pleasant. Those with ambitions were constantly striving, and those without would eventually develop undue desires in such an environment. Those who climbed the ranks sought to consolidate their power while those who hadn’t aimed at climbing higher. In the Royal Family, those pure and kind-hearted, even if favored by the Emperor to become Empress, ultimately met with unfavorable outcomes. Just like Empress Yuan, who died young and failed to protect even her son.
