Chapter 376: Chapter 217 Encounter_1

Qian Yixiu and Cheng Yue stood in front of the window and saw the carriage bumping towards their home. Qian Sangui was carried on the back by Su Siwu and accompanied by Lady Wu as they reached the first floor of the Wangjiang Building. The couple once again gave some instructions to Qian Xiaoyu.

The carriage went straight into the front yard; a man alighted from it. The man was tall and slender, dressed in a smart, azure changpao with wide sleeves, a sash of the same color around his waist, and a bamboo hat on his head. The hat was pressed low, hiding most of his face.

Qian Yeejin stepped forward, bowed deeply, and, taking his hand, quickly ushered him into the backyard.

Upon seeing the man, Cheng Yue’s body trembled, and tears fell like pearls from a snapped strand. She murmured, "It’s Brother Jiang, it must be Brother Jiang. He’s come back to see Yueyue, he really has come back to see Yueyue..."

Qian Yixiu held her hand and said, "Yes, it’s our father who has returned. But he’s been gone for eleven years with no word, and we have no idea what has happened to him during these years. Mother, you must stay strong. If he’s turned bad, if he doesn’t want us anymore, then... we mustn’t have anything to do with him."

"Yixiu," interrupted Cheng Yue, her tear-filled, wide eyes filled with incredulity as she scolded, "Yixiu, how can you think that about Brother Jiang? He’s your father; he wouldn’t turn bad, he wouldn’t abandon Yueyue."

Angry, with her temper flaring, Lady Wu let go of Qian Yixiu’s hand and hurried towards the staircase. However, when she reached it, she couldn’t bring herself to go down and began to cry into her handkerchief, saying, "Could it really be him? What would I do if Yueyue is mistaken? I’m so scared."

Qian Yixiu walked over and gently comforted her.

Downstairs at the Eight Immortals table, Qian Sangui’s eyes were red-rimmed. Lady Wu, unable to sit, stood at the door, looking outside expectantly.

Qian Manjiang was eager to return, practically running back to the Wangjiang Building, along with Qian Yeejin. As soon as Lady Wu caught sight of her son, she burst into tears and grabbed him. Qian Yeejin drew them both inside and closed the door.

Su Siwu circled the building, while Qian Xiaoyu sat on the rattan chair beneath the tree in front of the building, her gaze wandering all around.

Inside, with tears in his eyes, Qian Manjiang helped Lady Wu to sit down in a chair, then knelt and kowtowed three times to Qian Sangui and his wife, choking up as he said, "I have been an unfilial son, leaving for so many years and causing my parents to suffer."

After speaking, he crawled a few steps on his knees to Qian Sangui’s feet, crying. Lady Wu and Qian Yeejin also joined in, hugging Qian Manjiang as they wept.

At the top of the staircase, Cheng Yue, hearing the unmistakable voice of Qian Manjiang, ran down. She called out, "Brother Jiang, is it really you? Is it truly you?"

Qian Manjiang stood up and turned to face his wife, who remained as beautiful, slender, and innocent looking as before. Smiling, he said, "Yueyue, it’s me. I have returned. I’ve rushed back day and night."

Cheng Yue threw herself into his arms, laying her head on his shoulder and crying, saying, "Brother Jiang, why did it take you so long to come back? Why did you leave for so long before returning? Grandfather and the others said you died; they even made you a little gravesite. But Yueyue couldn’t believe Brother Jiang was dead, because Brother Jiang promised to return after a few blooms, Brother Jiang wouldn’t lie to Yueyue... Do you know, Yueyue has been watching the wildflowers outside the door every day, hoping they would fade and bloom again quickly... Brother Jiang, Yueyue missed you, missed you so much, so much... Wuuu..."

Hearing her words, Qian Manjiang’s tears flowed even more fiercely, as he gently patted her shoulder and consoled her, "Yueyue, don’t be sad. I haven’t died; I have come back, back to see you..."

Although the family was used to their little mother’s frank and effusive way, those words still made their faces flush. Qian Sangui coughed and said, "Manjiang, Manjiang’s wife, let’s save some of these words for later. Sit down, and let Jinwa and Yueyue kowtow to you."

Upon hearing this, Cheng Yue raised her head and proudly said to Qian Manjiang, "Brother Jiang, Yueyue has been capable; I’ve given birth to a set of twins. Yixiu is well-behaved, and Yijin takes charge..."

Qian Yeejin’s face flushed as he interjected, "Mother, your son has many strengths to speak of; mention others."

Cheng Yue said, "Mother knows Yijin has many merits, but others still value that particular strength..."

Qian Manjiang burst out laughing as the face of his dashing youth overlapped with his current one. He took Cheng Yue by the hand and sat down, saying, "Alright, let my son and daughter kowtow to me."

Zhao Cheng and Guard Ma, father and son, had both instructed him to treat the young master as if he were his own child, and under no circumstance to reveal his true identity.
