Chapter 330: Chapter 199 Who is Greedier_1
Because they had to accommodate the pace of both the ox cart and the donkey cart, Qian Yixiu and the others didn’t arrive in Wen County until late afternoon. To make up time, they didn’t even get off the cart for a meal, instead, they had some pastries on the cart to stave off hunger.
Monkey Brother and Benben were restless sitting in the cart and wanted to go out and run alongside it. Qian Yixiu did not agree. Benben might obediently follow along, but who knew what mischief this naughty Monkey Brother might get into? Besides, his unusual appearance could easily bring trouble. So, she told him about how different the big ship they would board was from the small boat they rode in at Guiyuan, how big it was, and how many levels it had. If he didn’t behave, she would send him back and he wouldn’t be able to board the big ship. Hearing this, Monkey Brother finally settled down.
They didn’t enter the town of Wen County; instead, they went directly to the wharf. Led by Uncle Liang, Qian Yixiu boarded the Liang Family’s large ship with her two maids, Lady Wei, Monkey Brother, Benben, and the embroidered screen, while Huang Tie, Master Lu, and some others escorted the twenty or so boxes of cosmetics and a few additional items onto another ship. This ship had already been rented days ago and would follow behind the Liang Family’s large ship.
Upon boarding, Qian Yixiu and her company saw Liang Zhaojin and Song Huaijin, Fourth Master Song, standing respectfully on the deck, while two gentlemen who appeared to be elders of the Song family were bidding farewell to Liang Zechong.
Song Huaijin had also grown into a graceful and handsome young man of his time, gentle and refined with a much-increased stature. Though he had a different type from the handsome and sunny Uncle Liang, both were handsome and had excellent temperaments.
Naughty Aunt Xiuxiu, who had a penchant for handsome men, was momentarily spellbound again, offering them a beaming smile—after all, she was still young and did not need to be demure.
Liang Jinzhao and Song Huaijin also noticed Qian Yixiu and walked over smiling to greet her, leading her and Monkey Brother, Benben up to the second floor of the cabin.
Liang Jinzhao said with a smile, "You and my grandma will stay in the two innermost cabins; Monkey Brother and Benben will stay next to us." He didn’t mention that this was his grandfather’s idea, as the old man often reminisced to him about the spiritual nature of the livestock in Guiyuan.
Qian Yixiu and others entered the innermost cabin on the right. The cabin was small, with two beds and a little table in between. Qian Yixiu instructed Lady Wei and the two maids to move the bed on the right next to the one on the left and had the boy servant help bring in the wooden box with the embroidered screen to place on the right.
Liang Jinzhao and Song Huaijin couldn’t guess what treasure the box held that the young maid was being so cautious about. They had suggested keeping it in the bottom deck where it wouldn’t get lost, but she was reluctant.
After settling in, Lady Wei led Bai Zhu down to the lower deck to stay, while Monkey Brother and Benben followed Liang Jinzhao to another cabin. They were lodged next to the Old Master Duke’s quarters, opposite Liang Jinzhao, and diagonally across from Song Huaijin.
Sitting by the window, Qian Yixiu and Zi Zhu were engrossed in watching the outside scenery, unable to contain their excitement. Qian Yixiu even felt like she was about to leave home for college in a past life, both longing for and apprehensive about the future.
Soon, they heard noisy sounds from outside the cabin. It seemed the Old Duke, the Old Duke’s Lady, the Old Monk, and the Little Monk had come aboard. The Old Duke’s Lady moved into the cabin opposite Qian Yixiu’s, while the others were a bit farther away. After some time, they could feel the large ship starting to move.
Two quarters of an hour later, Qian Yixiu thought that the Old Duke’s Lady opposite must have settled in, and it was time for her to pay her respects. This lady was like the direct superior of a corporate CEO, akin to the leader of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission in her past life, and it was crucial to make a favorable impression.
She changed into a short apricot-yellow jacquard brocade satin coat, a pale yellow soft satin undershirt and a matching embroidered long skirt. Zi Zhu helped her redo her hair in a bun, adorning it with a gold-inlaid ruby carp hairpin and two small yellow flowers.
Just as she was ready, there was a knock at the door; it was Liang Jinzhao wanting to escort her to visit his grandmother.
Uncle Liang always seemed so thoughtful, considering others’ needs.
Following Liang Jinzhao, Qian Yixiu went to visit the Old Duke’s Lady in the opposite cabin. Madam Liang, in her early fifties, was dressed in a ginger-yellow branch lotus pattern gold brocade satin jacket with a golden floral-patterned ginger base horse-face skirt and wore only a gold phoenix hairpin inlaid with pine green stones on her head. Well-preserved, she looked only in her forties, beautiful and dignified with a kind and gentle gaze.
As soon as Qian Yixiu entered, a maid placed a cushion in front of Madam Liang. Qian Yixiu then knelt on the cushion with great decorum and kowtowed to Madam Liang, saying, "Your servant Xiuer pays her respects to Madam Liang, wishing Madam every happiness and good health."
Madam Liang said with a smile, "Oh, dear child, quickly get up."
