Chapter 308: Chapter 191 Cute Monkey Sister_1

Three days later, on the 25th of June, as dawn just began to break, Qian Yixiu quietly rose. She climbed out of bed, careful not to wake her deeply sleeping mother, put on the clothes hung by the bedhead, and after wrapping the Phoenix Eye Bodhi Beads around her wrist three times, she tiptoed down the stairs.

Zi Zhu and Bai Zhu were already waiting downstairs, and they all headed to the Lianxiang Water Pavilion together.

Once in the bedroom, she took out the prepared green cotton and linen clothes from the cabinet, changed into them, and then tied the small dagger around her waist.

She put on the thick-soled, ribbon-tied cloth shoes that she had designed herself—made with the help of Xiao Yu, they were sturdy and did not cause discomfort to the feet.

After getting dressed, she combed her hair into two braided plaits in front of the mirror before winding them atop her head and securing them with wooden hairpins to prevent them from getting messy.

The two maids were somewhat puzzled—was such an elaborate dress necessary for a temple visit? Nonetheless, they only wondered in silence, not voicing their confusion.

Upon reaching the main courtyard, Master Sangui and Lady Wu were already up, waiting for her in the hall.

To Lady Wu and the others, the excuse was that Qian Yixiu was going to Daci Temple to offer morning prayers and ask the Bodhisattva to bless Master Sangui with a quick recovery from his illness. To show her sincerity, she would also stay in the temple for three days, following the monks in chanting and eating vegetarian meals.

The night before, Qian Yeejin had expressed his wish to accompany his sister to pray for their grandfather, but Master Sangui had objected on the grounds of schoolwork.

Lady Wu watched her granddaughter eat breakfast with a smile, endlessly praising her for her sensibility at such a young age.

Master Sangui was nearly brought to tears, biting back his emotions. Despite Master Beikong’s repeated assurances that there would be no problems and that several formidable animals were there for protection, he remained worried, fearing an unforeseen mishap.

Qian Yixiu ate two pancakes, an egg, and drank a large bowl of soy milk, filling her stomach well. Seeing Grandfather Sangui’s eyes redden, she smiled, tugged at his sleeve, and mouthed silently, "I’ll be fine," before leaving the room.

Lady Wu walked her to the outer courtyard, where a young monk was already waiting for her.

This monk, named Wu Ming, served the daily needs of the Old Monk. He had come to the Qian family the previous evening to deliver vegetarian pastries from the temple, stating they were sent by Little Master Uncle Hongji. He also came to collect twenty golden lotus leaves and, to ensure their freshness, stayed overnight in Guiyuan’s outer courtyard to pick them today.

Qian Yixiu was going to take advantage of his horse-drawn carriage for the ride to the temple.

Lady Wu saw her onto the carriage, then watched as it took the village’s backroad and headed east.

After the carriage passed a stretch of bamboo, Qian Yixiu got out, watched as the carriage continued eastward, and then turned to run towards the fork in the road leading to Xijing Mountain and Xishi Mountain.

Crossing the chaotic stony beach and reaching Xishi Mountain, she arrived at a familiar boulder. Monkey Brother, White Wolf, Dashan, and Benben were already there waiting—having arrived the day before and stayed there since.

Qian Yixiu greeted each of them with a smile, pulled out the long Phoenix Eye Bodhi Beads from her bosom, and tied them around Monkey Brother’s neck. She also produced two sets of Buddha Beads she bought in town and put them on Dashan and Benben. White Wolf, who had its own character, didn’t like such frills.

Although Qian Yixiu felt somewhat ashamed to deceive Dashan and Benben this way, she had no choice, as the Phoenix Eye Bodhi Beads were limited and, to appease the protective Dashan, she had to hastily buy two sets of beads to placate them.

She then took several backpacks out of the cave that she had prepared earlier, strapped two large ones onto White Wolf and Benben, while she, Monkey Brother, and Dashan carried smaller packs.

She gave them chunks of pork that had been left in the cave the day before, making sure they were well-fed, especially White Wolf, as the high temperature made it impossible to keep raw meat for long, and it might have to go hungry in the days to come.

With everything ready, the party of five set out towards Cave Sky Pool.

It was still early at this point, the sky flushed with morning light and the gentle morning breeze adding to the comfort of the journey.

Approximately a quarter of an hour in, Qian Yixiu found herself riding on Monkey Brother’s back. It wasn’t that she was lazy; rather, she was slowing the group down, much to White Wolf’s impatience.

This quickened their pace and also frightened Qian Yixiu out of her wits in the more perilous spots, where she could only close her eyes.

Probably finding his little master’s terrified screams exhilarating, Monkey Brother made detours even on the straightforward paths, jumping around until an irate Qian Yixiu grabbed its underarm, and it settled down.

An hour later, they arrived at the entrance to the cave. Though Qian Yixiu had recited the route in her mind countless times and the memory-adept Monkey Brother had traversed it before, she still closed her eyes and silently prayed. They reached the third cave entrance and lit a torch.
