Chapter 301: Chapter 188: Heavenly Secret_3

Old man Qian was more ecstatic than ever, boasting every day about how a high-ranking official from Capital City had helped him to his feet, even asking him to "please rise". The news circulated for over a month without dying down.

In mid-June, just as Old man Qian was riding high on excitement, he was struck dumb as if by a cudgel. He had heard that his granddaughter Qian Manxia’s dowry included property from the Old Qian Family. The third son had actually given her half of his shares in "Old Brother Snack House" and also the thirty mu of lotus ponds adjacent to the Hong River. Out of those thirty mu, five were planted with the precious Golden Lotus Root.

The blood rushed to the old man’s head in that moment, almost causing him to collapse on the spot.

Old woman Qian was even more distressed, pounding on her chest in agony. The third son was truly mad, giving that girl fifty mu of land, thirty mu of lotus ponds, and half of the shares in the Dessert House, and now they had hired several carpenters to make pine furniture for her. My God, that’s a lot of money. All these were supposed to be for her great-grandson Jinwa, how could it be given to someone outside the family?

This matter was opposed not only by the old couple, Qian Dagui’s family, and Qian Ergui’s family but also by Qian Manchuan and Qian Manhe. It was up to the third branch whether to give the lotus ponds and land, but the shares in the Dessert House should not have been given to an outsider. That was the foundation of the Qian family’s standing.

They asked Sister-in-law Lu to invite Qian Sangui to the Qian family’s first wife’s quarters for a discussion on the matter.

Sister-in-law Lu’s deed of sale was with the third branch, so her heart was still with them. She whispered to Qian Sangui, "It seems to be about the Dessert House."

Qian Sangui also guessed it might be about this.

Qian Yixiu was at a loss for words. The Dessert House was not an ancestral property of the Qian family; it was started by his own family, who merely asked the other branches to symbolicly contribute a few taels of silver to join the business. The original idea was to let the relatives’ families become wealthy, so their lives would be comfortable and they wouldn’t nag at his family every day.

A few days ago, Grandfather Sangui democratically consulted his niece and nephew, asking if it was acceptable to give half of the Dessert House shares to Qian Manxia. Both Qian Yeejin and Qian Yixiu agreed.

The young boy even said, "Giving Aunt and Sister more dowry will ensure they have a better life in the future. When I grow up, I can earn it myself."

Qian Yixiu, feeling sorry for the hardships his little aunt had endured from a young age, said, "That’s not enough, give all of the Dessert House shares to Aunt, and send more other things along with it. Our family will have even more money in the future."

Qian Sangui shook his head and said, "Half is sufficient; the remaining half will go to Jinwa. After all, it was a business started by the Qian brothers." He looked affectionately at Qian Yixiu and added, "Father understands that the Dessert House was your doing, but I can’t give you the shares for it. However, don’t worry; you and your brother will each have half of the Jinxiu Embroidery Workshop."

Qian Yixiu smiled, Grandfather Sangui was indeed a lovable old man—actually, at over forty, one is still in their prime, but Grandfather Sangui truly looked like an old man.

Seeing Qian Sangui hobble out with a walking stick, Qian Yixiu also wanted to follow. Qian Sangui reassured him with a smile, "It’s nothing. Your great-grandfather and grandfather are reasonable men; once father explains things to them, they will naturally agree. It’s getting dark. You should stay inside. Mother will accompany me."

That night, Qian Yixiu and her stepmother had gone to bed when suddenly, Bai Zhu came to report, "My grandfather says the master has fallen ill and is unconscious; he has been brought back. The lady is crying."

Qian Yixiu was panic-stricken upon hearing this and hurriedly got dressed.

Cheng Yue also began to cry upon hearing this, "What to do, will father-in-law die?"

Qian Yixiu comforted her stepmother, saying, "Don’t worry, grandfather’s former illness was so severe, yet he got over it. Mother, don’t be anxious. After you’ve slept and wake up, grandfather’s illness might be better."

She left Wangjiang Building and together with the tearful Qian Manxia, headed for the main courtyard. At the Moon Gate, she ran into Qian Yeejin, who was rushing over.

In the bedroom, Lady Wu was crying so hard she was about to faint, mumbling, "Head of the family, please don’t die. If you die, how are we—the widows and orphans—supposed to survive..." Lady He and Xiao Cui were consoling her.

Qian Manchuan and Qian Manhe stood aside, at a loss.

Seeing them arrive, Qian Manchuan hurriedly approached and said, "Don’t panic. Someone has gone to fetch Doctor Lin."

When everyone saw Qian Sangui’s ashen face and his eyes tightly closed, they too were frightened and began to weep loudly.

Qian Yixiu looked up and asked Su Siwu sharply, "What happened to my grandfather?"

Qian Siwu, in tears, said, "I don’t know; they didn’t let me in the room. I only heard that there was a fierce quarrel inside. After that, the master passed out."

Wiping away tears, Qian Yeejin asked Qian Manchuan, "My grandfather was fine when he went to your place, he walked out standing. How come he has become like this upon returning? What were you arguing about? You knew my grandfather had poor health, why would you still provoke him?"

Qian Manchuan’s face reddened, and he stammered without providing a clear answer.
