Chapter 290: Chapter 185 Speaking Doesn’t Count_1

Qian Yixiu tucked the pearls into her bosom, suppressed her excitement, and called for Zi Zhu to find someone to boil some hot water. After bathing the animals of the House of Animals, she led them to the backyard.

Ever since her home had added the covered corridors, walking to and fro between the courtyards during rain or snow would not wet the soles of her shoes.

After passing Moon Gate from the front yard to the backyard, she walked along the corridor to the west and came to the former large courtyard, now called Xihe Garden.

Xihe Garden had only one West Lake and three courtyards, which were still uninhabited. The place was deserted, and standing in the open space, she was certain there were no listening ears behind the walls.

Qian Yixiu had to be cautious, for the wonder of Cave Sky Pool was simply too preternatural; this secret could not be divulged to anyone.

When they reached a place with no cover, Qian Yixiu looked around to ensure no one was present before whispering to Monkey Brother, "Did you take them to Cave Sky Pool?"

Monkey Brother nodded and then grinned widely. Given his greedy look, he surely had been fishing for clams in the pond. Qian Yixiu had bought him river clams before, but the picky creature had refused to eat them.

Qian Yixiu then asked, "You didn’t encounter any dangers this time?"

Monkey Brother nodded again.

Their luck had been rather favorable, and Qian Yixiu’s spirits lifted.

This July, the Serpent Vine Chrysanthemum on that cliff was due to bloom. Once every five years, and only two flowers at a time—such rarity.

Qian Yixiu wanted to pluck them not to make money, for she could sell the pearls from Cave Sky Pool for any amount she desired. She intended to cure Uncle Liang’s illness, which would strengthen the relationship with Liang Mansion and make her family’s stance more robust.

Most importantly, she wanted her little stepmother to consume it, hoping it might restore her memory. Although not a doctor, she understood that epilepsy and amnesia were both related to neurological issues in the brain. In her non-professional opinion, if Serpent Vine Chrysanthemum could treat epilepsy, perhaps it might also be effective for amnesia.

Last time, the Double-headed Golden Black Dragon Snake had frightened her, and she feared other unexpected dangers. Given the safe journey of the House of Animals this time, it seemed their luck was still holding.

Qian Yixiu looked at Monkey Brother again. It had grown to at least one meter ten in height and its limbs were thick and muscular. In the blink of an eye, the three-and-a-half-year-old little Monkey Brother had matured into a strapping young lad. When June came, he would be four years old. Monkeys reached adulthood at four and a half years, and at four they were nearly adult, entering adolescence. During this period, a Fierce Red Monkey could be very formidable.

Fierce Red Monkeys were not only aggressive but also skilled at climbing trees and rocks. Climbing that steep cliff would undoubtedly not be a problem for Monkey Brother at his age, but he was not sure about dealing with the White Snake guarding the Serpent Vine Chrysanthemums.

Initially, when Qian Yixiu had heard about the effects of Serpent Vine Chrysanthemum at the Zhang family’s house, she would nearly float there night after night to watch the flower, doing so for over half a month. The White Snake, like a dutiful Guard, coiled around the Serpent Vine Chrysanthemums, never leaving, no matter the wind or rain. Only at the Zi Hour on June 30, just before the Serpent Vine Chrysanthemums withered, did the White Snake consume the flowers and retreat into the cave behind it.

Of course, Qian Yixiu didn’t want Monkey Brother to take such risks. She only knew that snakes were afraid of realgar wine but continued to ponder over other possible ways to drive snakes away, for double insurance.

So, by the end of June, she needed to lead the House of Animals to Cave Sky Pool, and she had to think of a good excuse. It couldn’t be like last time, causing her family to worry and alarming the whole village.

Qian Yixiu took out the pearls and examined them in her handkerchief. Four of them were slightly smaller than peas and a bit smaller than the ones she had brought back last time. These pearls must have been picked up by Monkey Brother at the edge of the pond.

Yet, one was much larger, surpassing the three large pearls she had retrieved before, though still much smaller than the ones she had kept hidden. This pearl was a pale blue with hints of gold-petaled flowers floating inside; perhaps it was too young for the lotus shape to form completely. This pearl was definitely taken by Monkey Brother from a newly fished clam.

Qian Yixiu was deeply moved, knowing that it remembered she loved pearls and had even brought them back from afar. She patted him on the neck and said, "Monkey Brother, you really are a capable and good baby." She then asked, "Only this many? Did any fall to the ground?"

If any had fallen, they could cause trouble if seen by someone with an agenda.

Hearing this, Monkey Brother stretched out his little paw and scraped her handkerchief a few times, then shook his head with a grin, indicating none were lost.

Truly adorable—Monkey Brother remained so, even though he was now a sturdy lad. Qian Yixiu praised him with a laugh until she caught White Wolf’s cold gaze and Dashan viewing Benben with pity, for Benben had been wagging his tail, seeking her recognition, yet she had failed to notice.
