Chapter 276: Chapter 179: Touched_3

Amid the murmurs, Qian Yijin rolled first, from the foot of the bed to the head, then from the head back to the foot, followed by Qian Yixiu rolling too, and together they rolled back and forth three times.

After getting up, a relative from the Zhang family gave each of the siblings a red envelope. Amidst laughter and teasing, the bride and groom arrived in the bridal chamber. The bride sat on the wedding bed, and the groom lifted her red veil with the bridal scale. The beautiful bride, blushing and shy, lowered her head, her face brimming with a happy smile.

In the midst of gasps of amazement and showers of compliments, the plump woman scattered the wedding candies (jujubes, chestnuts, peanuts) into the bride’s bosom, onto the conjugal bed, and into every corner of the bridal chamber, continuously singing auspicious phrases.

Next, was the eating of raw dumplings, and someone asked the bride, "Does it feel raw?"

"Raw," the bride’s voice was as soft as a mosquito’s.

Then, the couple drank crossed-cupped wine.

Qian Yixiu didn’t join in on the excitement at the front but instead stood alone in the back of the crowd, looking quite melancholic.

She remembered how her mother married her father.

Her lovely mother came to that home during her most beautiful years, even dressed in a roughly-made red cotton wedding dress, she was the most beautiful bride.

Sitting on a dilapidated bed inside a crumbling house, watched by relatives and friends as if she was a monkey on display, too scared to make a noise for fear of being thrown out, losing the only shelter that, though poor, shielded her from the wind and rain.

After that, she was trapped in that small courtyard, pregnant, birthing daughters, the endless waiting, the foolish hope, day after day, year after year...

Perhaps, it was because she had gone foolish that she could continue to live on.

Unnoticed, a tear rolled down her cheek, and Qian Yixiu quickly raised her hand to wipe it away.

But she heard Uncle Liang’s voice, "Little girl, why are you crying? Don’t tell me it’s tears of joy, it would scare me."

Being so tall, he had to bend down low to look Qian Yixiu in the eye.

Such a brat.

Qian Yixiu rolled her eyes and said, "Who’s crying? You’re not old yet, how come your eyes are blurry already."

With that, she slipped past him and squeezed into the crowd.

Liang Jinzhao was briefly taken aback by the retort; the little one had already slipped into the crowd and disappeared. She really had been crying; he hadn’t seen it wrong.

The little wily bean, small in size but with so many tricks.

As he was lost in thought, Zhang Yang, who had finished the ceremonial rituals, squeezed out of the crowd, patted his shoulder and said with a smile, "Let’s go."

Liang Jinzhao and his cohorts followed Zhang Yang to the front yard to drink.

After lunch, the guests went to watch the Red Cloud Troupe perform opera. Old Lady Zhang and Old Lady Song didn’t join the excitement but called the young Qian siblings to her room.

Old Lady Zhang, feeling apologetic, said, "I’ve heard about it and am sorry for your troubles."

Old Lady Song added from the side, "That Madam Wu is really coarse. Even if she wants a pretty grandson, she shouldn’t have treated someone else’s children so roughly."

Old Lady Zhang snorted coldly, "She relies on her husband being the Magistrate in Xishan County Town to throw her weight around. Since Sir Wong, the Master County Magistrate, hasn’t been here long and also relies on Magistrate Wu, she’s become even more unbearable. The only reason she gives our Zhang family any face is that we’re related by marriage to your Song family; otherwise, even that bit of politeness wouldn’t be extended."

Old Lady Song turned to a maidservant behind her and said, "Go to the front yard and find Fourth Master, tell him to discipline that Magistrate Wu a bit..."

The two old ladies comforted the siblings some more, mainly Qian Yijin, before letting them go to watch the opera.

Upon leaving, Qian Yijin gritted his teeth and said, "I wish I could chop off that old woman’s hands. And that Magistrate Wu, it must’ve been him who took our mother away. If I ever get the chance, I will deal with him." And with resentment, he added, "I will never roll on a bed again."

Poor child, he was left with a shadow. Qian Yixiu didn’t know what to say, and could only squeeze his hand as consolation.

After the opera, Qian Sangui sent someone to call for the young Qian siblings to go home.

Lan Jiejie and Qing Jiejie asked for permission from Old Lady Song and Second Lady Song, who were worried about allowing the two girls to go to the countryside alone, saying they would discuss it with their father that evening. He was due for a trip to Song Village, to see if he could take them for a day out in the countryside.

Qian Yijin and Qian Yixiu arrived at the Zhang family’s side door, where Huang Tie was already waiting with the cart. Old man Qian’s face was flushed with excitement, this being the first time he had feasted at a grand household and watched an opera.
