Chapter 255: Chapter 171: Escaping by Jumping into the River_2

The night was cool like water, and moonlight filtered through the window lattice, casting a hazy glow over the little room. Cheng Yue and Qian Yixiu lay in bed, both unable to sleep; however, one felt at ease while the other was burdened with heavy thoughts.

Looking at her little mother’s foolish grin, Qian Yixiu felt both heartache and sorrow.

"Bones lie by the river without a tomb, yet in dreams still in the chamber of spring."

This must have been an accurate portrayal of little father and little mother.

Even in her sleep, Cheng Yue smiled, enjoying sweet dreams until dawn.

Qian Yixiu, on the other hand, suffered a bit. Her sleep was restless, filled with nightmares. In her dreams, the river in the heavy rain was fierce and rapid, its waters turned red with blood. On the riverbank, there were menacing faces, bloody swords, shrill screams, and cruel close combat... The handsome little father fell, then a wave surged up to the shore, sweeping him into the tumultuous waves...

The next day, the Qian family rose early. Though tired, they perked up and began their preparations. Around the time of chen, Liang Jinzhao and the others came over for breakfast, then took their wild rabbits and chickens and rode off on their horses.

Before he left, Liang Jinzhao said to Qian Yixiu and her siblings, "In a few days, we’ll be heading back to the Capital City. When we return to Ji’an Province next year, we’ll visit your house again."

Song Huaijin spoke with regret, "I’m afraid I won’t be able to come next year, as I’ll be entering the Imperial College to study once I return to the Capital."

Upon hearing that he was going to study at the Imperial College, Qian Yeejin’s eyes turned red with envy.

Qian Yixiu smiled and said, "Then let me wish Young Master Song academic success and a prominent placement on the list of successful candidates in advance."

Song Huaijin laughed heartily, "Such a charming little girl. Alright, young master accepts your auspicious words." Then he said to Qian Yeejin, "If you want to seek fame and success in the future, you still need to find a great teacher. The teacher at your private school is fine for elementary studies, but far from adequate for advanced knowledge. Wait another year or two, when you’re a bit older, try to go study at Xizhou Mansion, where there are many good teachers. Or ask my Second Grandpa for help—the teachers at the Zhou family clan school are excellent; it’s the best place to study."

Qian Sangui looked at his grandson and nodded, "Indeed, that’s true. Students taught by famous teachers are always much more accomplished."

Looking at Hongji, you could tell. He was half a year younger than Qian Yeejin, but his knowledge far surpassed that of Yeejin.

The Little Monk didn’t leave; he said he wanted to play for another day before returning to the monastery tomorrow.

As a cloud of dust rose, a dozen high-headed horses left in a rush. Since yesterday, these noble horse riders had caused quite a stir among the villagers of Huaxi Village. Hearing that the nobles had gone into the mountains for a hunt and would later visit Qian’s third wife’s home, they dared not go to his house to pry. But today, seeing them leaving, Wang Lizheng and others invited Old man Qian to third wife’s place to find out the news.

So Old man Qian, Old woman Qian, the couple of Qian Dagui, the couple of Qian Ergui, and a grand contingent headed toward the west of the village, of course with little Qian Yiduo among them. Just as they reached the entrance of the village, they ran directly into Qian Sangui.

As it turned out, Qian Sangui had guessed his relatives and friends would come to his house to investigate, and with the Little Monk as a guest, it was inconvenient to entertain them. So he sent Qian Siwu with a rabbit, a chicken, a leg of wild boar, a leg of lamb, and some pork offal to Dagui’s house. Elated that they were bringing so much food for a feast at his place, Qian Dagui led everyone back the way they came, toward his home.

The crowd returned to the village, with only little Duo Duo insisting on visiting Qian’s third wife’s place.

Qian Yeejin and the Little Monk were reading under a tree, and Qian Yixiu took the little girl to the courtyard to enjoy the bustle. Old man Cai, Su Erwei, and Su Sanwu were processing the game caught the day before, planning to keep some for themselves and to sell or give away the rest.

Approaching midday, little Duo Duo still hadn’t left, probably intending to stay in Qian’s third wife’s home for lunch as usual.

Qian Yixiu smiled and said, "Little Master Hongji will be dining with us, so there won’t be any meat."

Qian Yiduo pouted, "Don’t you always have to cook meat for guests? If you don’t, the guests might blame you. Besides, your house has so much meat; if you don’t eat it quickly, it will spoil."

"Monks cannot eat meat," Qian Yixiu shook her head.

With smart logic, Duo Duo said, "Monks can’t eat meat in the monastery, but they can sneak some outside, right? Buddha won’t see."

He then ran up to the Little Monk and said, "Little Master, this is your chance to sneak some meat while you’re not in the monastery. Try the meat; it’s delicious. Buddha won’t see, and he won’t blame you."

After finishing, Duo Duo swallowed a mouthful of saliva. She really wanted to persuade the Little Monk to eat the meat because only if he ate meat would she get to have some.

Hongji, upon hearing this, swiftly put down his book, brought his hands together and said, "Amitabha, a sin, a sin." Then, displeased, he told Qian Yiduo, "Little Benefactor, do not speak such words to this Poor Monk again, for I will not secretly eat... Ah, a sin, a sin."
