Chapter 215: Chapter 155: Retrieving Pearls_2
Lady Wu had no other choice but to take out five bolts of silk fabric from the bedroom. She even reluctantly shot a few sharp glances at Cheng Yue.
Cheng Yue saw that her mother-in-law was not pleased, but she still mustered up the courage to carry the silk fabric into her own little room. After arranging the silk, she went to the main room with tears in her eyes to apologize to Lady Wu saying, "Mother, I’m sorry for making you angry. But what can I do? YueYue wants to dress Xiu’er beautifully to make Brother Jiang happy and doesn’t want to upset Mother."
Seeing Cheng Yue with her tearful and pitiful look, and fearing that she would become so upset as to fall ill again, Lady Wu had no choice but to say, "Mother’s not angry, Xiu’er is my own granddaughter, and I love her too."
Cheng Yue finally held back her tears upon hearing this and went out to join Qian Manxia, and Qian Xiaoyu in making clothes and shoes for her daughter.
All three sets of clothing were summer gowns: one set in peagreen tunic and trousers, one in apricot-colored blouse with light lotus purple long skirt, and one in pink crossover-collar ruffled skirt, all of which were cut by Xiao Yu following the fashion trends of the Capital City. The little mother also embroidered some small flowers and leaves around the neckline, cuffs, and the hem of the skirts.
The three pairs of embroidered shoes, in apricot, pink, and pea green respectively, featured embroidered motifs of plum branches, lotus flowers, and roses.
They also made a few small silk flowers to match the outfits.
The clothes fit much better than the previous ones, which were too loose and bulky.
Looking at her beautiful daughter dressed so prettily, the little mother smiled with a radiant look of satisfaction and said, "Hmmm, Mother’s Xiu’er looks beautiful. Remember, you must dress beautifully and cleanly like this every day." Then, something seemed to cross her mind, and her expression darkened slightly as she added, "If Brother Jiang saw how well his daughter is being cared for, he would also praise YueYue..."
Qian Yixiu kept a cheerful smile and vigorously thanked her little mother. But in her heart, she entirely disagreed. Did they take her for her little mother, never stepping out of the house? Dressed like this, not only would it be inconvenient to follow Monkey Brother on treasure hunts, but even taking a walk around the village could attract the attention of those with wicked intentions, who might then concoct plans to stealthily sell her off for money.
In the future, it’s best to wear her old clothes when in the village and dress in these new clothes only when swaying in front of her little mother or when going to the city.
At night, the little mother had already drifted into sleep, but Qian Yixiu couldn’t sleep. She was thinking about how to purchase some land to dig ponds for planting the Golden Moth Tea.
Listening to Shopkeeper Cui’s description, whether it was the processed tea leaves or the brewed tea, both had a golden color. The pearls from the Cave Sky Pool also mostly shimmered with a golden sheen. The older, larger pearls had a more intense golden glow, while the younger, smaller pearls had just a faint hint of gold that required careful examination to notice. Perhaps the smallest pearls, not yet fully grown and smaller than peas, didn’t show any gold at all.
The lotus roots that grew there were also slightly golden, which is why she had named them Honey Gold Peach. The peaches were not the typical peach-red, but tinted with a golden orange. If she could grow these peaches in the future, she would call them Honey Gold Peach too.
It seemed that gold was undoubtedly the distinguishing feature of the Cave Sky Pool.
She also considered that the initial few years would be crucial for making money with such a special variety of lotus root because once others got ahold of the seeds and started cultivating them, the price would inevitably drop from its initial high. Therefore, the best strategy was to plant extensively and buy more land for planting; this would ensure the lotus roots grew even better. The land to the west was cheap, and its soil quality was not bad. After digging ponds for the lotus roots, the excavated soil could be piled up to create artificial hills, where peach trees could be planted in the future.
The family currently had roughly a thousand taels in savings, plus the seven hundred taels from selling tea, totaling over seventeen hundred taels. Even if they were to buy a hundred acres of wasteland, it would only cost around one hundred and fifty taels. Hiring people to dig the ponds and plant the lotus roots would not be very expensive—just a few hundreds of taels of silver would be more than enough.
It would be best to ask Shopkeeper Cui to help purchase the fields directly from the County Government Office and then have them managed by the acquired staff, which would also allow her family to keep a low profile.
None of these were problems; the problem was how to persuade Grandfather Sangui to agree to her plan. She kept thinking about it until the latter half of the night when a light rain began to fall, and she finally fell asleep.
The next morning, the rain had stopped. The ground was damp, and raindrops were still dripping down from the leaves, while the moist air mixed with the scent of flowers was refreshing.
Yijin was practicing martial arts under the eaves, the little mother was looking out from the doorway, and it was a rare occasion that the Dashan family and Monkey Brother were all at home, squatting under the eaves and looking up at the sky.
Qian Yixiu first quietly greeted Monkey Brother and Dashan, asking them not to go out today as she had tasks for them. Then she jumped a few times and stretched under the eaves, which helped clear her somewhat groggy mind.
Qian Manxia, coming out of the kitchen with breakfast, glanced at her and said, "I really can’t understand Xiu’er. Such a young girl thinking about worries so much she can’t even sleep. Waking up in the morning with red eyes, I wonder what you’re worrying about all day long."
