Transmigration: A Farm Girl’s Brocade -
Chapter 154 - 134 Hide Well_1
Chapter 154: Chapter 134 Hide Well_1
Commoners always harbor curiosity, envy, and admiration towards the royal family, and Qian Yixiu was no exception. In her previous life, she would pay attention to any news about Prince Charles, Prince William, Princess Kate... even the short-lived Princess Diana.
She believed that many, many people felt the same as she did.
However, when she delved deeper into her thoughts, the excitement was replaced by an inexplicable fear. This was not the great whatever country of her previous life; the palace struggles, battles for inheritance, and fights for position here in history were the bloodiest and most cruel.
Although she didn’t think that her mother was necessarily a victim of palace intrigue, she couldn’t completely rule out this possibility. To think that someone with such an adornment was reduced to wandering the countryside as an imbecile showed how powerful that enemy must have been and how dangerous her mother’s previous situation was.
The Qian family was a bona fide farming family; without help, a mere county magistrate could have annihilated them. If those who persecuted her mother found out, death was the only outcome.
In view of this, to protect her own and her mother’s lives, she must never reveal their noble lineage. Although it gave the somewhat vain Qian Yixiu a sense of walking in brocade at night, the safety of life and family was of the utmost importance.
She then settled on her next step of the plan, to hide her beautiful mother deeper and deeper, even deeper, much deeper.
Furthermore, she needed to make a fortune in silence, become a big landlord or a wealthy tycoon of sorts, find a backer with financial and influential power to protect her mother from the wicked, and prevent outsiders from discovering...
It wasn’t until the roosters in the courtyard began to crow that Qian Yixiu finally fell into a deep sleep.
The next day was New Year’s Day, and the family got up early as usual.
Qian Yixiu also got up with her eyes resembling those of a panda.
First, she put on her own bright red fine cloth jacket and skirt, then helped Cheng Yue to put on a slightly more glamorous pale lotus-colored jacket and skirt. This set was previously made by Cheng Yue herself, and even had twining lotus flowers embroidered on the crossed collar. Nowadays, it was much too large for the small frame of her mother, making her face appear even smaller and paler.
Knowing her mother’s likely true identity, Qian Yixiu felt even more pity for her. She tucked the necklace into her mother’s collar and hugged her neck, whispering in her ear, "Mother, remember, you must never let anyone see this necklace. Hide it well. It’s very, very important."
"Not even Brother Jiang and Jinwa?" Cheng Yue naively asked.
"Only father, Yixiu, and brother know," Qian Yixiu said.
Cheng Yue touched her chest, nodding and said, "Okay."
Afterward, Qian Xiaoyu entered the room to comb hair for the three ladies.
Qian Yixiu took out the gold hairpin that Qian Xiang had given her, but after thinking it over, she put it back. Her mother shouldn’t wear any gold jewelry so soon after "burying" her father. Instead, she took out the silver hairpin that Lady Wu had given and placed it atop her mother’s head, then picked out two plain hair flowers and positioned them at her temples.
She said with a smile, "Mother looks so beautiful, just look for yourself," as she pushed the mirror towards Cheng Yue.
Perhaps Cheng Yue also found the beautiful woman in the mirror appealing, as a slight smile appeared on her face, "Yes, pretty." Her eyes shifted towards her younger siblings and said, "Jinwa looks pretty too, so does Yixiu."
Dressed in red, Qian Yeejin humorously added, "It’s because Mother made us look so good."
This amused everyone and laughter filled the room.
Qian Yixiu then dressed Monkey Brother and took out the clothes for Benben and Tiaotiao, calling over the little ones frolicking in the yard to dress them neatly.
When they got to the main hall, Qian Sangui was already nearly ready. He was wearing a dark blue thick long cotton robe, embellished with a grass pattern embroidered around the collar and cuffs; his sparse hair was held up on his head with a wooden hairpin. Qian Xiaofeng was squatting, helping him into new cotton shoes that were also fresh multilayered-soled shoes. Qian Manxia went back into the bedroom to fetch a cotton cap to place on his head.
Qian Yixiu exaggeratedly widened her eyes and exclaimed, "Ah, now I finally know why Auntie is so good looking, it’s all thanks to Grandpa’s handsome looks."
She made Qian Sangui burst into laughter. He stretched out his hand and pinched his granddaughter’s chubby face, saying, "You little thing, our family’s life is so much better now, how come you didn’t sleep well?"
The cool fingers made Qian Yixiu shiver.
Qian Manxia scolded playfully, "You little rascal, always thinking too much and talking nonsense."
Qian Yeejin stared at Qian Manxia as if he had seen something marvelous and said, "Auntie, why are your ears so shiny?"
