Chapter 149: Chapter 132: Worshiping Little Daddy (4K votes for the month)_2

Qian Yixiu cried her heart out. Even though she had no interaction with her junior uncle, even though she had only squatted in the corner and observed him for over half a month, she really, truly liked that handsome and astute junior uncle. She saw how he showed filial piety to his parents, how he cared for his sister, and how he wickedly tempted his silly mother into doing those embarrassingly mushy things...

His voice and smile are still vivid in her mind, yet now they are separated by life and death, destined for different paths. Originally, she was the one separated from him by the realm of ghosts and humans; now, their positions have reversed.

If only he were still alive, life for the family would be so much easier, and she wouldn’t have to struggle so much. Perhaps her mother’s illness would have improved.

The entire family mourned deeply, crying for the better part of the day before returning home.

After returning, Manjiang’s wife fell ill, with the sickness coming on strong and fierce, her body burning up and occasionally speaking nonsense about catching bugs or flowers blooming and wilting.

Everyone was terrified, and they first sent for Doctor Lin. Doctor Lin applied acupuncture and prescribed some medicine, but Manjiang’s wife showed no signs of improvement, still alarmingly feverish and talking nonsense. Doctor Lin advised them to seek a more skilled doctor from Baohe Hall, warning them that her condition was extremely dangerous and could be fatal.

Qian Sangui hastily sent Huang Tie with an ox cart to Baohe Hall to fetch a doctor. Zhang Yang arrived before dark; he applied acupuncture to Cheng Yue and prescribed more medicine. After laboring through most of the night, Cheng Yue’s fever somewhat subsided, and she was finally able to sleep peacefully.

Qian Yixiu and her younger siblings were shooed to live in the east wing – they were reluctant, but Lady Wu firmly refused to let them into the room, claiming that children easily transmit illness. The siblings cried and sniveled outside the door until midnight when they heard from Zhang Yang that their mother was getting better, and only then did they go to the east wing to sleep.

The Little Divine Doctor also stayed in one of the rooms in the east wing for half the night.

The next day, after applying another round of acupuncture to Cheng Yue, Zhang Yang prepared to leave.

Qian Yeejin and a servant accompanied Zhang Yang to the county town to retrieve medicine for Cheng Yue and to deliver the New Year’s gifts to Zhang Mansion. They brought fifty pounds of sausage, ten jars of sweet rice wine, ten boxes of pastries, other local products, and a silk-faced cotton-padded jacket made for the old lady.

Lady Wu still wouldn’t allow Qian Yixiu to enter the left wing, so every half an hour or so, Qian Yixiu would go to the door to check on things and to ask Qian Manxia or Qian Xiaoyu, who were inside.

That afternoon, Qian Yeejin brought back ten doses of medicine and also the New Year’s gifts from the Zhang family, which included four bolts of cloth, ten pounds of tangerines, four jars of aged grain spirits, and some stationery items for himself.

Although the medicine was administered continuously and the fever had subsided, Cheng Yue’s spirit was weakened. She seemed dazed, much like the state she was in when she first came to the Qian family, and this lasted until the New Year without any improvement. She needed help combing her hair and dressing. Qian Xiaoyu or Qian Manxia had helped her with these tasks in the previous days, but afterward, Qian Yixiu took over. Just like the former Lady Wu, she patiently helped Cheng Yue dress and comb her hair, while consolingly teaching her and offering words of comfort.

On New Year’s Eve morning, Lady Wu and Qian Manxia took the two siblings to Qian’s Main Courtyard, where the whole family, led by Old man Qian, was going to visit the large tomb to pay respects to the deceased.

Old man Qian noticed Cheng Yue’s absence and asked, "Where is Manjiang’s wife?"

Qian Yeejin answered with tears in his eyes, "My mother’s illness hasn’t improved yet."

Old man Qian snorted coldly, "Not better yet? Is she unable to walk, or is she unable to get out of bed? Manjiang’s widow refuses to visit his grave at a time when the family should be together. This is really unacceptable! Even if she has to be carried, she must go. Otherwise, how can she live up to my poor grandson?"

In tears, Qian Yeejin pleaded, "Great-Grandfather, my mother’s sickness this time is very serious, and it’s because she misses my father so much. If it weren’t for the timely help of Little Divine Doctor Zhang, my sister and I might have lost our mother..."

Hearing this, Qian Yixiu grabbed her brother’s clothes and began to cry, "I don’t want Mother to die, I want Mother, I want Father..."

Old man Qian sighed heavily and didn’t speak further. He left the Four Sisters-in-law of the Wang Clan at home to prepare the New Year’s feast since Old woman Qian was too ill to go. The rest of the family took the offerings to the large tomb to pay their respects.

Upon returning, Qian Manxia took her younger siblings straight home. They needed to change into festive clothes and take their filial gifts to the elderly couple at Qian’s Main Courtyard, then join Qian Sangui for the New Year’s feast.

It was a tradition to eat the New Year’s feast with the elderly couple in the Main Courtyard. Even in the previous year when Old man Qian did not return, they had joined Old woman Qian for the meal. However, in past years, as Qian Sangui was too ill to attend, Cheng Yue would not go either.

This year, Cheng Yue would still be absent from the celebration. Thankfully, she would have the Qian Hua family to keep her company at home.
