Chapter 144: Chapter 130: High Standards (4K for Monthly Pass Vote)_3

After sending off Steward Wong, Qian Yixiu asked for Qian Sangui’s permission and then made another trip to the north end of the village to Xie Huzi’s butcher shop, where she requested Xie Huzi to deliver a side of pork to her home the following day. The family was planning to make some more sausages, for their own consumption and to give to the Zhang family.

Qian Yixiu had become the butcher shop’s largest customer, thanks in part to the good relationship between the two families. Xie Huzi agreed with a smile and also gave her a few bones that hadn’t sold, "Take these back to stew with some radishes."

Qian Yixiu left the butcher shop carrying the bones and humming a little tune. Just as she left the village entrance, she saw Wan Dazhong chasing after her. She was terrified; this was not her own home and there was nobody around. Her petite frame could definitely not withstand a severe beating. She deeply regretted not bringing Benben and Tiaotiao with her.

She screamed, "Don’t come any closer, don’t even think about killing someone to silence them. My Huang Tie is much tougher than you, and if anything happens to me, he won’t let you get away with it."

Wan Dazhong said helplessly, "Don’t be afraid, I mean you no harm. We bear no grudges against each other; how could I possibly kill you and silence you? I just wanted to ask if you have any misunderstanding about me. It seems we haven’t met or had any enmity before, have I offended you in any way, or have you heard some rumors slandering me?"

Qian Yixiu thought for a moment and said pitifully, "If I tell you, will you let me go and not hit me?" Seeing Wan Dazhong nod, she continued, "There are many rumors about you, mainly from Fan Erhei. He said that he is in league with you, that you not only often drink, fight, and gamble together but also often go out together to harass young women. He would block in front, and you would cut off behind; he would imitate a dog barking, and you would mimic a cat meowing..."

Qian Yixiu recounted all the bad deeds done by Fan Erhei, where Wan Dazhong was involved and even complicit.

Wan Dazhong’s mouth twitched as he listened. He felt that the little girl was largely talking nonsense. However, some of the incidents did involve him, so she wasn’t entirely making things up. He habitually pressed his knuckles, contemplating that he needed to sort out that Fan surnamed fellow later, to ensure his mouth stayed shut.

However, this little girl had a terrible impression of him, which meant her family probably didn’t have a high opinion of him either; this made things difficult.

Wan Dazhong said resignedly, "I’m not that despicable. Some things must be seen to be believed; you can’t just listen to one side of the story."

"Okay," Qian Yixiu nodded obediently, and then asked, "May I go now?"

Seeing Wan Dazhong nod, she turned on her heels and ran off as fast as she could, afraid that if she ran slowly, she might get dragged back.

Upon returning home, Lady Wu was in the courtyard and asked, "Why are you running? Is there a dog chasing you?"

Qian Yixiu said, "Isn’t there a fierce dog behind me?" She handed the bones to Lady Wu, "These are from Uncle Xie," before going to the east wing to watch her little mother embroider.

On the twenty-eighth day of winter, Old man Qian returned with Qian Sigui and Lady Wong and their seven-year-old daughter Qian Manyuan and four-year-old son Qian Manpo.

They had chartered an ox cart and even stayed overnight in the neighboring county before arriving home in the afternoon.

Qian Yiduo ran to report the news, asking Qian Yixiu’s family to join them for dinner that evening. She also told Qian Yixiu, "Fourth Master brought back lots of nice things from the provincial capital, Sister Embroidery, come and have a look with me."

Qian Sangui hadn’t seen his father and Qian Sigui in nearly two years and was extremely excited, insisting on going to Qian’s Main Courtyard. Qian Yixiu volunteered to stay home to accompany Cheng Yue, allowing her little aunt to be a guest for once.

It was a great hassle for Qian Sangui to leave the house in winter. First, they prepared the mattress on the ox cart, then he put on his thickest cotton robe, covered himself with a quilt and wore a cotton hat, before Huang Tie carried him to the cart.

For the first time in over a decade, Old man Qian saw his son venturing out in the winter. Despite his son’s somewhat sallow complexion and shortness of breath, he was much improved compared to before. He said with relief, "I’ve heard that your health has gotten much better, and it seems to be true."

Qian Sangui, holding back tears, said to Old man Qian, "I have been unfilial, causing father and mother worry."

During the meal, Old man Qian mentioned that Qian Sigui was now well-established in the provincial capital. Though the shop and house were rented, the business was noticeably better than before. After the New Year, selling "Old Brother" pastries would definitely boost business even further. He spoke proudly of his fourth son no longer needing his worries, deciding to live peacefully in the countryside from now on.

Qian Sangui expressed his wish to take his elderly parents to live with him, but the couple of Qian Dagui still firmly disagreed.

Seeing his two sons compete for the honor of caring for their parents, Old man Qian was pretty pleased, but ultimately he decided to stay with the eldest son’s household. There he had his eldest son, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and he must find a way to elevate this branch of the family.
