Chapter 81: The Discussion.
"You don’t have to apologize for that," she said, her voice warm. "You fought when you didn’t have to. That was enough."
Kael gave a small smile. But before he could respond further, footsteps approached.
Elysia had walked over between him and her. She stopped beside Cecelia, her eyes flickering briefly toward Kael.
"Cecelia," she said quietly but firmly, "come with me. I need to talk to you."
Cecelia blinked, confused. "Right now?"
"Yes," Elysia said, already reaching out to take her hand.
She gently tugged Cecelia away, not even glancing at Kael again.
Kael stood frozen, watching them go.
(Why does it feel like she have been hating me)
He looked down at his hands.
(If I were stronger... would things be different?)
(Or is it because I am just a mob character in this novel?)
He took a deep breath.
"I won’t stay weak forever," he whispered under his breath.
And with that, he turned and walked back toward the training fields. The exams were in three days.
But then, a sudden thought came through Kael’s mind.
The coins.
His eyes narrowed as he recalled the assassin’s final words before disappearing.
"The ancient coin... it was given by the Shadow Warden..."
Kael clenched his fists, the memory still fresh. That assassin hadn’t just been crazed—he had mentioned something important. Something that could be connected to the strange powers, or perhaps even the truth behind the recent attacks.
"The Shadow Warden..." Kael muttered under his breath.
(To obtain it, I must go through Shadow Warden".
"I can’t fight them head-on—not yet. I’m too weak."
His expression hardened with resolve.
"But I can still use my mind... and the knowledge I have of this world."
He had read the story. He knew parts of the plot before everything started going off-track.
He remembered how the devil contractors worked, how they spread their influence—through shadows, fear, and whispers. They often left behind trails: cursed coins, mysterious scrolls, strange markings. Tools to empower their pawns... and corrupt their minds.
"If I can’t face the contractors directly," Kael thought, "then I’ll go after their subordinates. The weak links. The ones lurking in the slums, in the shadows... the ones desperate enough to take those cursed deals."
He bit his lip.
"I’ll start with the coin. Trace it back. Study it. And if I can—I’ll find out where the next attack will come from."
He looked up toward the sky.
"No more waiting around."
This was his chance—not just to grow stronger, but to understand the chaos spreading across Arcadia.
And to make sure Cecelia... won’t get killed in this world.
Afternoon
After two hours of exhausting self-training under the sun, all 140 first-year students had gathered at Training Ground. The students looked a bit worn out—sweaty, dusty, and some still catching their breath—but there was a sense of anticipation in the air.
Around the edges of the field, a few professors stood watching silently, arms crossed, observing the students’ behavior and interactions. They didn’t interfere, but their presence added a layer of pressure.
Then, from the front of the ground, two students stepped forward—Edwin, confident as always, and Elysia, calm and composed.
They stood side by side, drawing everyone’s attention.
Edwin raised his hand and called out loudly:
"Hey, everyone! Quiet down for a second—can you all hear me?"
The chattering gradually died down as heads turned toward them.
He continued, his voice clear and full of authority:
"The Midterm Exam is coming in just three days. You’ve all heard the format—it’s not something you can just charge into blindly. It’s going to test everything: survival, teamwork, strategy. That’s why we want to talk about something important—forming teams."
A few murmurs spread through the crowd.
"Let’s be real—if you think you can pass this alone and you’re not one of the top ranks... then you’re just asking to fail. So don’t act brave. Be smart. Find people you trust. Form a solid team."
Elysia Adds Her Voice
Elysia took a small step forward:
"You can form teams with up to five members, including yourself. That means you’ll have to think carefully. Who complements your skills? Who can you trust in a real battle?"
She glanced across the crowd.
"There’s no reward for going solo if you don’t make it out alive. But at the same time, choose your teammates wisely. Strength isn’t everything—coordination matters more."
As soon as they finished speaking, the crowd erupted into hushed conversations. Some students looked relieved—others looked nervous.
Everyone began eyeing potential teammates.
"Hey, want to team up?"
"What rank are you?"
"I’ve got healing spells, I can support!"
"Let’s ask Jin!"
The top-ranked students like Jin, Elysia, Edwin and Cecelia quickly found themselves surrounded by students asking to join their team. Some tried flattering, others just begged.
Kael’s POV — Back of the Crowd
From the back of the crowd, Kael stood silently, watching everyone with a quiet gaze. His body was still sore, and his stamina hadn’t fully recovered since waking up from the infirmary. But that wasn’t what bothered him the most.
It was how invisible he felt.
"One hundred and forty students... and I’ll probably be the last one anyone thinks of," he muttered to himself, eyes scanning the excited groups forming ahead.
Just then, a memory flashed in his mind—the assassin’s words whispered in a dying breath:
"The ancient coin... it’s with the Shadow Warden..."
Kael’s jaw tightened.
(I can’t win by brute strength like Edwin. Or sword skills like Elysia. That’s not my path...)
(I’ll use knowledge. Strategy. Tactics. That’s how I’ll survive. That’s how I’ll get stronger...)
The crowd was beginning to buzz with noise now. Students had started forming teams, calling out to each other, laughing, showing off their abilities and confidence.
At the front of the group, Edwin and Elysia stood side by side, rallying students to team up.
Their presence was magnetic—many naturally gravitated toward them. Kael, however, only felt more out of place.
Without a word, he quietly turned away from the group and began walking toward the far end of the field.
Some students nearby noticed.
"Hey... isn’t that the guy who just got out of the infirmary?"
"What’s he doing? Is he... leaving?"
"Wait, he’s not even joining a group? Is he going solo?!"
One student hesitated, then called out to him, "Hey! Kael, aren’t you going to team up with someone?"
Kael paused, glanced over his shoulder, and gave a faint, unreadable smile.
"No. I work better alone."
