Chapter 147 Dead End

Chapter 147: Chapter 147 Dead End

I took a shallow breath through my nose, then tried again. I dragged one foot back, but pain shot through my spine, and I wobbled almost dropping to the ground.

I kept pushing forward. Each step felt heavier than the last, like I was walking through thick mud. My chest ached from more than just the rejection. My heart still hadn’t settled, and my breath came out uneven.

Elder Dominic gave a slight nod. "Start the clock."

The bell rang loudly, echoing off the walls. "Thirty minutes begin now."

I dragged myself into the woods. I didn’t even have the strength to run. My body was screaming at me to fall, to give up, but I didn’t. The cold air outside hit my skin, and I staggered, nearly falling again.

The trees stood tall like shadows, the ground wet and uneven beneath my feet. My wings caught on low branches, dragging behind me uselessly. Blood was still seeping from my back, soaking through the dress, dripping with every step I took.

"You know now will be a good time for a portal to show up. Fucking show up and take me out of this place." I weakly placed my hand on a tree for support.

I waited for a few seconds but nothing came.

A shaky laugh rumbled from my throat like a jerking car. "Don’t tell me that you are going to disappear now that you have ruined my life. Show up and take me to a place far from here before the hunting starts."

But it was just the chirping of the insects that responded back to me. "No... No... You are my only hope. I didn’t request the hunt game so I can be gutted... show up please... please." My voice lowered, hot tears streaming down my face.

I clenched my chest. ’Why is everyone abandoning me... where are you now that I need you?’

I felt hollow inside. The only one that had ever come to my rescue was Damon. A man I supposed was my knight... even he had abandoned me. And my wolf had gone silent since the rejection.

My lips quivered... I knew it was not the time for crying but my body had already passed its limit.

I forced myself to continue walking.

My legs were already starting to go numb. My arms felt heavy. My vision blurred, and my breath came in ragged pulls. The forest was getting darker, and I couldn’t even tell where I was going anymore.

I stiffened when my ears picked up on twigs snapping. I turned around, my eyes widening in horror. ’They have found me.’

My heart pounded in my ears, I turned and began to run as fast as I could... but in reality, I was just dragging myself hurriedly through the woods.

"Ember wait." A familiar voice rang behind me.

"Lydia?" I halted mid-step. I turned and truly it was Lydia and Caroline.

They ran towards me, transforming into their wolf form. Lydia, a brown wolf with white patches all over her body, and Caroline had dark brown fur throughout.

"Get on." Lydia lowered her back.

Warmth spread through my chest, I was more than touched by their gestures but I was not going to put them in danger because of me.

"Sisters, thank you for your help. But this is a path I must walk alone. I can’t put you in danger..."

"Get on, Ember. We are already on their radar because they must have noticed our scent. Get on and forget about the heart-touching speech." Caroline snapped at me.

"Aren’t you scared? I’m a fae, and you can get killed because of me!" I cried.

"That is our path Ember, it is now or never. Get on." Lydia stared at me with sadness in her eyes.

"Get on Ember, time is almost up." My wolf voice suddenly echoed through my head.

I closed my eyes in exasperation. "If anything happens to you guys I won’t be able to forgive myself." Resigning to my fate, I climbed onto Lydia’s back.

The wind whipped past my face as I lay weakly on Lydia. We dashed through the woods, my hands tightened around her furs.

"Where are we going?" I weakly muttered.

"Outside the border, we just need to go as planned." Caroline ran beside us.

Our body grew tense as the howling sounds of the werewolves pierced through the cover of the night. The hunt... had just begun.

"Run Lydia!" Caroline urged.

"I’m trying, but her weight is slowing me down."

"Guys, why don’t you just leave me here and run for your life. They are after me, I can buy you time to escape." I muttered, I couldn’t stop the tears that were streaming down my face.

"We are sisters. And as your big sister, I’ll not watch you die... I have already lost a sister, I won’t lose another." Lydia growled as she increased her pace.

Growls and snarls came from every direction.

The woods blurred as we sped past them. ’Portal please open up... please.’ I chanted, glancing back to see if the werewolves had already caught up to us.

Light shone like torches scattered through the woods, some were golden, others blue and red. They had caught up so fast. "They are here" my voice cracked.

The chase continued for some minutes, with the werewolves blocking our paths, which made us run off track. Venturing deeper into the forest.

"I feel like they are toying with us," Caroline grunted.

"They are blocking our path of escape." Lydia snarled as one of the werewolves came closer to us.

"We need to turn back, we don’t even know where we are heading!"

"They are there, it would be foolish of us to turn back now."

There was no hope in the situation. The werewolves were cornering us, forcing us into a dead end.

The wind became stronger as we approached a clearing. I sighed out of relief believing we had found a way out.

Caroline and Lydia stopped abruptly, which caused a jolt through my body. Rocks fell beneath their paws as we reached a cliff. It was a dead end.

Caroline stood in front of us. Baring her fangs at the werewolves.

"Trade me to them, please," I said quietly, my voice barely more than a whisper. "You don’t stand a chance against them... and I can’t watch you die too."
