Chapter 139 The Gathering
Chapter 139: Chapter 139 The Gathering
(Damon POV)
After I left Ember in the room, I mindlinked some of the most trusted guards to stand watch over my room and to prevent her from going out.
"Why didn’t you tell her the person that you are going to mate with is Allison? How can you mate with someone that you hate? Someone who tried to poison you?" Beowulf began his ranting again.
I inhaled sharply, ignoring his words.
"Is it not better to mate with Ember? At least she saved you when she drank the poison. At least we have a connection with her. Aren’t you surprised that not only can we touch her, we can also mate with her? This hasn’t happened for the past hundred years, and you think it is just a coincidence?" He continued.
"I know it is not just a coincidence... I know there is more to her. But can’t you see that we are running out of time? I need to protect the pack, and this is not the time that we should fight... I need you now more than ever." I clenched my fist.
"You know how much I hate Allison, I even want to rip her throat out. But we have to endure because of our pack, we need to make the sacrifice for them... and not them alone, for the realm too." I added.
"Coward. Don’t blame me if I ripped her throat out." He growled before retreating further inside my head.
I shut my eyes, trying to control the emotions spiralling in my head. "This is for the best," I said to myself.
"Someone seems to be having a tough time." Alaric’s voice rang from behind me.
I glared daggers at him.
"What? Did I say something wrong? I mean you are finally going to take a mate, not that I am very pleased with your decision." He walked behind me, before coming to my side.
I looked down at his leg. "You are lucky your leg managed to survive being fully capitulated." I scoffed at him.
He swallowed, then his eyes moved to me now and then. And when he did that I knew he was about to say something that would make me punch his face.
His green eyes met mine, and they flickered with concern and worry. "Do you really want to proceed with the mating? It’s not like the war is going to happen tomorrow, why don’t you take some time and think about it?"
"I don’t have any problem with mating tonight," I said without batting an eye.
He scoffed. "Lies," he muttered under his breath. "I thought you were finally having a meaningful bond with Ember... If I had known this was how it was going to end I wouldn’t have risked my life to save her."
A deep growl rumbled from my chest, causing the air to stiffen and overbearing with my authority. "Don’t you ever say that... she is worth risking your life for," I growled harshly.
"Ouch." Alaric looked at me with a painful gaze. "Is that how you see me? Even your pet’s life is more important than mine? I thought we were friends... even brothers. So my life doesn’t matter to you?"
"If she is this important to you, then why would you mate with someone else?" His voice grew angry.
"I never said she is very important to me."
"But she is more important than my life. And there is only one person whom you would risk my life for and that is Theo. So how did I drop to number three in your important list?" He sighed in exasperation. "I don’t feel good about this, as your friend and as your Beta... I don’t want you to do something that you are going to regret."
"I won’t regret anything Alaric," I said with a reassuring smirk.
My conversation with him had made me realize that Ember might be closer to my heart than I thought.
"We should get ready for the gathering." I patted his back.
We resumed walking. I didn’t want to dress in Ember’s presence, it just felt awkward to me.
"If you know you were going to let go of her this easily, you shouldn’t have stayed cooped up in the room with her for nine fucking days." He grunted.
Why is no one supporting my decision? Can’t they see things from my perspective? Or am I wrong to put my people first instead of my heart? I’m a King, and it is my duty to put my people first instead of any other thing.
I didn’t respond to him, because for the first time in a long time, I didn’t know what to say. I couldn’t even understand my actions anymore.
....
I buttoned the jacket slowly, watching myself in the mirror. The black three-piece suit fit exactly how it should, it was broad at the shoulders, sharp down the sleeves, with the waistcoat snug beneath. Each button was in place, polished, and clean.
The shirt underneath was crisp, the collar firm against my neck. I ran a hand through my hair once more, slicking it back until not a single strand moved out of place.
Everything about my appearance was deliberate and powerful. I didn’t dress to impress, I dressed to remind them who I was. I didn’t need to raise my voice or make a scene. One look was enough, and one step into the room, and the silence would follow.
My expression remained blank and cold... it was obvious I wasn’t looking forward to the gathering.
I strode out of the room, heading to the hall where the gathering was to be held. As I approached, the sound of the music playing filled my ears. I clicked my tongue in irritation. The guests were already arriving.
Alaric and Theo waited for me at the entrance of the hall.
"Alpha," they greeted in unison.
I gave them a curt nod. We stepped inside the hall, and all the guests’ eyes turned to us. They all rose to their feet.
"Alpha King." They greeted.
My steps faltered, as I felt an unknown feeling surging through me. As if someone special to me was going through pain. ’Who is it?’
