I only glanced at Hina’s phone screen briefly, but that was enough for me to read a paragraph.
...Was that her personal journal? If so ... I think I’m starting to understand why Manager still hasn’t fired her.
Because either way... Hina’s other hand was starting to grope my back, slowly inching downward toward my butt.
Hina and Manager are part of the same perverted group. Seriously, why does it feel like every woman I meet ends up like this?
“Not a chance.”
“O-Ouch! Ren-san! Don’t pull my hair!”
“Stop calling me with weird honorifics. And where do you think your hand is going?”
Her habit of trying to grab my butt was getting more and more annoying, seriously.
I let go of her, and Hina looked up at me with teary eyes. She adjusted her hair and headband, which had gone out of place.
“Ugh, why do you keep pulling my hair lately? I’m gonna go bald if this keeps up every day!”
That’s because I finally found out it’s your weak spot. It’d be a waste not to exploit it.
“I think you’d look good bald. Want me to continue?”
“Have a mercy, please ...”
That’s enough joking around for now. Since I found her, there’s no need for small talk.
“Come with me.”
“Huh? Where to?”
“The kitchen. I’m going to train you there. Manager told me everything. She said you almost bankrupted the restaurant, didn’t she?”
“I did mess up a lot yesterday, but not that bad!”
If you keep this up without improving, bankruptcy is only a matter of time.
I walked ahead, and Hina followed from behind.
“So, what part did you struggle with the most when working as a waitress yesterday?”
“You’re really going to teach me?”
“What else?”
After I said that, I heard Hina’s footsteps slow for a moment, like she was hesitating. Her next words were slightly shaky too.
“...Are you sure? I’ve already caused you so much trouble here. If I ask for even more help... I know my stupid brain will just make things worse.”
“I don’t care. As long as Manager gives me the bonus she promised, I don’t mind training a dog for a few days.”
Even if I regret it later, I can’t go back on my word to Manager now, can I?
“I-I’m not a dog!”
“You are. Even your own big sister calls you that. She clearly treats you like a pet.”
“Hic... Sis Alice is so mean...”
Hina sounded like she was crying. But after a while, the sobbing stopped, and was replaced by her usual tone.
“...Thank you.”
“I’ll say it again. If it weren’t for the bonus, there’s no way I’d agree to teach you.”
“At the very least, I know Ren would never give up on me.”
That’s because I like money more than anything else, obviously.
After that, she didn’t say another word, and neither did I. Our walk to the kitchen was filled only with silence and the sound of our shoes hitting the floor.
Once we arrived, I opened the door and entered the area where my coworkers were busy with their own tasks.
There was a reason I chose this crowded place to train Hina. Even if it might be a bit of a nuisance to others, I still thought it was the most suitable place. From here, we could observe the customers from a distance without them noticing us.
So after asking for permission to use a little space to train Hina, I looked for a comfortable spot near the door that wouldn’t block the way if someone needed to pass.
Hina stood next to me. She silently observed the customers for almost a minute before suddenly looking nervous.
“...M-Mastah, what should I do now?”
Mastah? Who’s she talking about?
“Answer my question first. What was the hardest thing about being a waitress yesterday? I can’t know where to start unless you tell me that.”
Hina tapped her chin with her finger.
“Hmm... Ugh. Almost everything I did as a waitress was hard. I don’t even know where to start.”
“Then just say anything. Start with the basics.”
Hearing that, she then stayed in her thinking pose for a few seconds again, until her face suddenly lit up.
“I got it! Senior scolded me a lot about taking orders. She said, she couldn’t believe I couldn’t remember what the customer wanted, ugh. But, how am I supposed to remember if the menu is so long? My brain felt like it was gonna explode ..."
“...Didn’t they give you an order pad? Why didn’t you use that?”
“I did! But I couldn’t read my own handwriting afterwards, so ... it didn’t help. Hehe.”
Hina scratched the back of her head, looking embarrassed.
...I’m not going to yell at her for that. Honestly, I sometimes struggle to read my own school notes too.
But this is a bit tricky. If she can’t remember, and her handwriting sucks...
Then I remembered Hina’s phone and the notes she had on it earlier.
“Try typing the orders on your phone. Manager shouldn’t have a problem with it. Even if you make typos, it’s still more readable, right? Besides, phones have speech-to-text now if typing is too slow.”
“Ah... You’re right! That’s genius, Ren! Why didn’t I think of that!? I’ll get my phone ready!”
Tsk, tsk. That’s because I’m a great man who never even studies before exams. Brilliant ideas like this are just a fraction of my genius. Get ready to be amazed again, Hina, because if you stick with me, you’ll never run out of genius tricks.
I scanned the customers and found one who looked like a good target, someone sitting by the window.
I patted Hina on the shoulder.
“Since I’ve already given you a way to handle your issue, it’s time to put it into practice.”
“Huh? Just like that? You’re not going to ask me any more questions?”
“Didn’t you say you struggled with a lot of things? Rather than asking one by one, I think it’s better if I watch you in action and figure out solutions afterward.”
I pointed to a man by the window.
“See that guy? He just looked at the menu and no waiters have approached him. That means he’s ready to order. Go.”
“O-Okay.”
I saw Hina stare intensely at the customer I pointed out. She took a deep breath, puffed up her cheeks, and slapped that until they turned red.
“I’m going, Ren!”
“That’s the spirit.”
Hina took one step forward. Her foot moved ahead. She pulled her phone from pocket, and her face was full of determination.
But maybe because she was too focused on the customer or whatever reason, her foot got caught on her long skirt... and she fell.
Almost everyone around us was staring at her. Some even laughed lightly.
Hina lifted her head and looked at me with teary eyes. Now, not only were her cheeks red, but her nose also looked like a clown’s.
“R-Ren-san...”
... This is going to be exhausting. Fr.
