HuMing checked the magazine Han ShuYi had handed him—it was exactly as Han ShuYi had said, filled with blanks. It seemed the other party had merely used him to expose HuMing’s location; as for how to deal with him afterward, that was probably a whole different plan.

He tossed the magazine back to Han ShuYi and turned his gaze to the body lying on the ground.

“He was tailing you the whole time,” HuMing said flatly. “Probably to shoot you in the back in case you turned.”

Han ShuYi hadn’t noticed the man behind him at all. The guy had concealed himself well. If what HuMing said was true, then the moment HuMing showed up, he could’ve been shot dead.

Cold sweat beaded on his forehead at the thought.

But a moment later, his brows furrowed as another thought came to mind.

“Wasn’t Han YunXi with you? Where is she now?”

“I hid her in a cave. They’ll have a hard time finding her. I only came out this time to see what kind of choice you’d make.” HuMing pulled a piece of gum from his pocket and handed it to him.

Han ShuYi took it without hesitation and popped it into his mouth.

For now, they were tentatively allied.

He glanced around. At some point, the once-clear sky had darkened, heavy with the threat of a coming storm.

“Right—something else. Gu ZhaoChuan already knows about you. He knows you know his secret. What you do next is up to you.” Han ShuYi shrugged off the weight of that revelation.

Aside from seeking revenge on Gu ZhaoChuan, he had only one goal: survival.

Whatever chaos HuMing stirred up—it didn’t matter to him.

Still, he explained the reasoning behind his actions.

“You get it, right? If Ruo Dan was able to find me in prison, then it was just a test—to see where I stood. And they clearly know you and I have met before. Otherwise, today’s magazine wouldn’t have been blanks.”

Betraying HuMing was just the price of gaining their trust.

Otherwise, there was no way he could’ve broken out of prison.

“I get it,” HuMing muttered, pulling a wry smirk. “But damn, you really didn’t hesitate at all.”

He hadn’t expected Han ShuYi to sell him out so completely.

Still, the current situation… wasn’t bad.

So what if Gu ZhaoChuan knew? Back in the Gu household, there was little he could actually do. And with his second uncle still around, HuMing had eyes and ears on every front.

But for now, his focus had to be on escaping with Han YunXi.

“What’s the situation like around here? Do we even have a shot at getting out?”

“They’ve sealed off everything. Even the people in the hills can’t get out. If you want to escape, you’ll need to find a hidden path. Ruo Dan mentioned there’s a waterway nearby. If you follow that, you might make it out alive.”

Han ShuYi fished a pack of cigarettes from his pocket, stuck one between his lips, and offered another to HuMing.

HuMing blinked, surprised. Han ShuYi never smoked.

Catching his look, Han ShuYi let out a chuckle.

“What? Don’t stare like that. Stress relief. Didn’t sleep a wink the night before the breakout. Coming out here… it really feels like everything’s changed.”

He leaned against a tree, visibly loosening up—just a little.

You could tell the pressure was crushing him.

“Oh, and one more thing.” Han ShuYi dug out a USB drive from his pocket and tossed it to HuMing. “Swiped it off Ruo Dan. Pretty sure he hasn’t noticed it’s missing yet.”

HuMing caught it and noticed the faded writing on the casing.

It looked important—but without a computer, he couldn’t do anything with it yet. He tucked it away, then looked back at Han ShuYi.

“What now? That guy’s dead. If you go back alone to report, it’ll look suspicious. You know how ruthless that man can be. Not scared?”

“If I was scared, I wouldn’t be here,” Han ShuYi snapped. “What I am sick of is your smug attitude. You and I will never be friends.”

He tossed the cigarette aside and pulled out another, then motioned toward the pistol on HuMing’s hip—the one he’d taken off the corpse.

“Shoot me in the arm. I can’t pull the trigger on myself.”

“…Huh?” HuMing blinked. Was this guy serious?

“Just do it. Otherwise, how the hell am I supposed to explain things? Plus, it’s a good excuse to get a new gun.” Han ShuYi lifted the one in his hand meaningfully.

HuMing fell silent.

It wasn’t that he couldn’t do it—it was that he hadn’t expected Han ShuYi to go this far.

“Hey. Don’t get it twisted,” Han ShuYi said coldly, staring him down. “I’m only helping you because of Han YunXi. Back when I was with the Han family, they treated me well. This is just me repaying a debt.”

“…Got it.”

HuMing raised the gun and, without hesitation, fired.

The next instant, Han ShuYi let out a muffled groan, gritting his teeth.

He had braced for it, but as the bullet tore through his palm, the pain nearly made him pass out.

He slumped against the tree, gasping, eyes bloodshot.

“Go. They’ll be here any second.”

“…I better see you make it out alive.”

“Maybe.”

The words had barely left his mouth when his knees buckled, and he nearly collapsed.

They both looked up in unison.

They thought they were seeing things—but the trees on the nearby slope were starting to tilt as the ground trembled harder and harder. It was as if the entire slope wanted to shift, to slide straight down—straight toward them.

In the distance, the snapping of branches and roots was getting louder. Huge chunks of dirt and stone had already started falling.

“…Shit. An earthquake?!”

Han ShuYi cursed aloud and bolted without hesitation.

HuMing’s first thought was of Han YunXi, still hidden in the cave. Without a moment’s pause, he turned and sprinted in her direction.

No one could’ve predicted the disaster would strike now—of all times.
