Gu ZhaoChuan took a deep breath. Though the outcome surprised him, he understood—it was also an opportunity.

If he could work with this man now, then not only could he eliminate HuMing… he might even get rid of Shi Zhong as well!

The thought filled him with a renewed sense of confidence.

"Second Uncle, I don’t know what you’re really thinking, but my presence in the Gu family—was arranged by Shi Zhong. As for the whereabouts of my parents’ child, I truly have no idea."

Gu WeiYi’s eyes narrowed, a shadow of darkness flashing through them, quickly concealed.

Shi Zhong had deliberately placed them together to keep them in check.

Gu WeiYi’s gaze locked onto Gu ZhaoChuan. But even after hearing all that, he betrayed no emotion.

He rose slowly, setting down the photo frame in his hands.

"ZhaoChuan, you know… even if you weren’t Brother’s biological son, he still wouldn’t have given up on you. But many things that happened later were because of your actions. You leaked far too much to Shi Zhong—that’s why I ended up in this mess. So why, exactly, should I help you?"

Gu ZhaoChuan’s smile began to fade.

 

He understood what Gu WeiYi meant… but had no idea which specific incident he was referring to. After all, he had sold out plenty of intelligence on the Gu family.

"Second Uncle… are you saying I’m the reason you betrayed the Gu family?"

"You were the one who leaked QiuLing’s whereabouts, weren’t you?"

"Bai YongKang thought I was in that car, and tried to get rid of me. Unfortunately for him, Shi Zhong called me just in time to keep me away. Looking back now… that was when Shi Zhong really began laying his trap for me. And you—" Gu WeiYi’s voice turned cold, "—you were part of it."

Gu ZhaoChuan’s face shifted slightly. He knew—what the other man said was true.

And Gu WeiYi’s loyalty to his wife was unwavering. Even in her half-dead state, he had never considered giving up on her.

From the sound of it, their fragile alliance might’ve just crumbled for good.

He took a deep breath, mind racing.

Gu ZhaoChuan furrowed his brow, a sense of hopelessness rising in his chest.

But just then, Gu WeiYi’s voice rang out again.

"ZhaoChuan, now that things have come this far—what exactly do you plan to do?

With your current ability, you’re in no position to go up against Shi Zhong. What makes you think you’re qualified for me to even consider joining you?"

That question lit a spark in Gu ZhaoChuan’s mind.

Now wasn’t the time to keep his trump cards hidden. If he wanted a real alliance, he had to show sincerity.

"Besides One-Eye, I still have another card to play. Someone even Shi Zhong doesn’t know about—because they’ve never made a move. If we want to take down Shi Zhong, we’ll have to wait until he lets his guard down and shows himself."

‘Another trump card?’ Gu WeiYi was surprised.

They had no idea Gu ZhaoChuan had been cultivating such forces.    They didn’t even know when he started making contact with these people.

Gu WeiYi looked up and stared into Gu ZhaoChuan’s eyes, trying to discern whether he was lying.

But Gu ZhaoChuan pressed on.

"One more thing—Shi Zhong has always paid special attention to HuMing. From the moment HuMing entered the Han family, Shi Zhong had his eye on him. He ordered me to get rid of HuMing, or else I would’ve never gone after him so persistently. You know this, Uncle. If I don’t complete Shi Zhong’s orders, my identity will be exposed. There are times I had no choice."

He shook his head with a bitter smile, like a man cornered and forced to do the unthinkable.

"There’s still something off about HuMing. You’ve noticed it too, haven’t you? Even the assassins I sent were taken out by him. What normal high school boy could pull that off? HuMing’s identity—there’s more to it than we know."

His analysis wasn’t unreasonable.

HuMing had taken out professional killers with his own hands.

 

He’d played the part of a spoiled young master for years—then suddenly revealed martial prowess that was anything but ordinary.

 

Anyone who gave it real thought would sense something was wrong.

"Second Uncle, we’re in the same boat now.

If we don’t help each other… then all that’s waiting for us is Shi Zhong’s control."

Gu ZhaoChuan’s words were full of persuasion, while Gu WeiYi remained silent, lost in thought.

The room fell into stillness.

On the table, the hands of the alarm clock ticked forward slowly.

"ZhaoChuan… I watched you grow up. Between you and HuMing… I still trust you more."

The words struck deep. Gu ZhaoChuan’s eyes lit up with emotion.

He gripped Gu WeiYi’s hand tightly and said with trembling excitement:

"Second Uncle… you don’t know how long this has haunted me. Ever since I found out who I really was, I’ve lived every day in fear—afraid Shi Zhong would expose me, afraid you all would abandon me. Now, finally… there’s a chance to break free from that monster. There’s nothing in the world that could make me happier."
