"You're really trusting. Aren’t you afraid I might betray you?" Han ShuYi crossed his arms and stared coldly at HuMing, clearly unconvinced by his words.
Given their history, it wasn’t surprising. To Han ShuYi, HuMing had always been a sworn enemy—there was no foundation for trust. More importantly, he had no reason to help him.
Even if Gu ZhaoChuan’s presence irritated him to no end, watching HuMing and Gu ZhaoChuan at each other’s throats was still amusing enough for Han ShuYi to enjoy the show.
"Even if you do betray me, I still have ways to deal with you." HuMing replied confidently.
At those words, Han ShuYi stood up. He dusted off his sleeves and walked away without even glancing back.
But just before he stepped out, HuMing still caught what he said.
"In that case, get lost. I won’t help you."
HuMing sat still, watching Han ShuYi’s figure gradually vanish through the doorway, his face expressionless.
He remained there in silence for a long while. No one knew exactly what was going through his mind, but it was clear the negotiation had failed.
When he stepped out of the police station, he saw Han LiTian’s car parked by the roadside. HuMing walked straight toward it.
As soon as he got in, his eyes met Han LiTian’s.
There was no emotion in the old man’s gaze, and it was impossible to tell what he thought of HuMing’s visit to Han ShuYi.
“Dad, you must’ve heard and came right away. What’s your take on Han ShuYi?”
“…This outcome is what he deserves. He shouldn’t have done all those things—shouldn’t have tried to get you killed. Back then… I really hoped the two of you could live together in peace at home.”
Han LiTian had imagined that scenario more than once. Sadly, reality had always turned out differently.
In the end, Han ShuYi walked a path of no return. And HuMing… walked away from him.
“Let’s go home.”
HuMing turned his head to look out the window. His voice remained calm.
…
Far away, in JingDu—
Word of HuMing’s departure had spread, and in the shadows, many began to stir.
With Shi Zhong missing, Dr. Huang had been consumed with thoughts of his wife. He desperately wanted to see her again. And from his last conversation with HuMing, he vaguely sensed that Shi Zhong might be deliberately keeping her from him.
Whether she was dead or alive—he had no way of knowing. That uncertainty gnawed at him.
He was on edge, yet dared not act rashly.
As usual, he walked up to Xie QiuLing’s hospital bed for a routine check. But just as he approached, he clearly saw her fingers twitch ever so slightly—followed by a faint fluttering of her eyelids.
He froze for a moment, then quickly leaned closer and spoke softly.
“Miss Xie, can you hear me? If you can hear me, move your fingers.”
Xie QiuLing seemed to be struggling inside a nightmare. Her fingers started to trace across the blanket in response to his voice.
It was a promising sign—her consciousness was returning.
Dr. Huang quickly pulled out his phone and dialed Gu WeiYi’s number.
Now that Xie QiuLing was waking up, it gave him more leverage to negotiate with Gu WeiYi and the others.
More importantly—Shi Zhong wasn’t around.
He didn’t have to follow orders anymore.
“Don’t let me down…” he thought to himself.
…
Elsewhere in the same hospital, Kang Xin’s health had improved significantly. Just one more day, and she’d be discharged.
She had also heard that HuMing had returned to his old home.
She knew there was nothing she could do to help him now, so all she could do was rest.
Truthfully, she had spent a lot of time reflecting. She realized she was still too weak—there was no way she could support HuMing like this.
She had thought about getting stronger. But HuMing was always busy, and she didn’t want to burden him. So, most of the time, she trained alone.
That kind of progress… was slow. Too slow, in her eyes.
Knock knock.
A sound came from the door.
Kang Xin opened it and saw a nurse standing there, holding a tray of medical instruments and smiling kindly.
“Kang Xin, how are you feeling?”
“Much better. Thank you for taking care of me these days.”
“Well then, since you’ve rested enough, would you mind coming with me?” The nurse’s tone was gentle as she raised her head, still smiling.
But something about it made Kang Xin instinctively step back.
She didn’t know when it happened, but someone had already shut the door behind her.
Her brows furrowed as she locked her eyes on the nurse, ready to defend herself at any moment.
The woman was beautiful. Her smile exuded calmness, offering no sense of danger. And yet—those were always the scariest kind of people.
“Who are you?”
“Long time no see. You’ve grown up so much… and prettier, too. I’m honestly impressed HuMing can stay so composed around a girl like you.”
The woman clearly knew HuMing. But that did nothing to lower Kang Xin’s guard.
The nurse casually sat on the edge of Kang Xin’s bed, picked up a fruit from the table, and began peeling it.
“It really has been a long time…” she said, slicing the fruit in half and handing one piece to Kang Xin.
The gesture made Kang Xin freeze.
She looked up at that face—and in that moment, memories came flooding back like a tidal wave.
“You’re… HuMin?”
“Mhm~ Looks like your little brain still remembers things. I bet you’re surprised to see me like this, huh? After all, it’s been years.”
“You’re a nurse in JingDu? But I’ve never seen you around!”
Kang Xin visibly relaxed. Somehow, seeing HuMin made her feel safe.
“Do I look like someone suited to nursing? But this uniform is kind of sexy, don’t you think? I wonder if HuMing would react if he saw me in it…”
HuMin took a bite of the apple, one leg crossed over the other, her hand braced on the bed. Her heel dangled from her toes, her flirtatious eyes locked on Kang Xin’s.
Then, suddenly, she stood up.
“Alright, enough small talk. I’m here to take you away today.”
“Take me away? But HuMing doesn’t know—”
“Shh.” HuMin pressed a finger to Kang Xin’s lips. “You can’t tell him. Not yet. What I’m about to do is very important… and I need your help.”
Kang Xin fell into silence. HuMin’s words were tempting—but a part of her still wanted to stay by HuMing’s side.
Seeing her hesitation, HuMin added one more line—one that hit right where it hurt.
“Right now… you’re just a burden to him.”
