Chapter 64: Heart Pouring...

"Relia? Why isn’t he healing?"

Evelina looked at the various vials and bowls on the table beside Damian’s bed, feeling frustrated and worried.

The faint glow from some of the vials showed that the healer had tried everything to stabilise him, yet Damian remained unconscious. His pale skin and shallow breathing only made her feel more anxious.

"Relia," Evelina whispered, her voice trembling, "why isn’t he healing? Shouldn’t he be better by now?"

Relia sighed, her voice soft in Evelina’s mind. "I don’t know, Evie. Wolfsbane is a nasty thing, but he’s stronger than most. He absorbed all of your pain and the poison. Maybe... maybe his body is just taking time."

"That’s not good enough," Evelina murmured.

Her fingers traced the edge of one vial, trying to make sense of the healer’s efforts. She felt helpless. None of the vials was labelled, and there was no clear way to know which had already been used.

Relia’s voice carried a note of caution. "Don’t mess with those. You might do more harm than good."

Evelina bit her lip and stepped back, deciding to trust that the healer would return soon. For now, she could only focus on the one thing she could control: being there for Damian.

She grabbed a basin of warm water and a clean cloth from the side table and began to clean his face.

As Evelina wiped Damian’s forehead with a damp cloth, she felt a wave of emotions wash over her. Tears filled her eyes as she looked at his strong features, which now appeared so unnaturally still.

"You didn’t have to do this," she whispered, her voice breaking. "You risked everything for me, Damian. And for what? I didn’t even know how I felt about you... not until I thought I might lose you."

Relia whispered softly in her mind, but Evelina hardly paid attention as her words flowed out uncontrollably. "You drive me crazy sometimes, with your stubbornness, your arrogance... but you’re also the only person who’s made me feel safe in a long time."

A tear slipped down her cheek, falling onto the back of Damian’s hand. "I think... I think I might—"

She wiped Damian’s face with a damp cloth, her hand shaking slightly. The warmth of his skin brought her some comfort, but his motionless body and shallow breaths filled her with a quiet sadness she couldn’t ignore.

"You’re so stubborn," she murmured. "You jumped into a pit without thinking, save me, and now you’re here—because of me." Her fingers brushed against his temple, pushing away a strand of dark hair.

Relia’s voice hummed in her mind, gentle but teasing. "Look at you, pouring your heart out to an unconscious man. You could at least wait until he’s awake to hear it."

Evelina sighed, her gaze lingering on Damian’s peaceful face. "I’m just... trying to make sense of this," she admitted. "He’s my mate, and I didn’t ask for that. But... maybe I didn’t need to. Maybe this—whatever this is—was always going to happen."

Relia’s chuckle was faint but it carried a note of warmth. "Finally starting to come around, are we? Took you long enough."

Evelina shook her head, feeling a weak smile tugging at her lips despite the tears gathering in her eyes. "Don’t push it," she muttered.

Leaning closer, she rested her forehead against Damian’s hand, her voice barely a whisper. "I was so angry when I ended up here—in this world, in this body. Everything felt like it was crashing down, and then... you. You walked in like you already knew how to carry everything I couldn’t. It wasn’t fair. I didn’t want to care."

"And yet?" Relia prompted gently.

"And yet," Evelina said softly, closing her eyes. "I do. I care about him. More than I want to admit."

Relia’s voice was soft, nearly gentle. "He’s your mate, Evie. It’s not about what you planned or wanted—it’s about what you need. And whether you like it or not, you need him."

Evelina stayed quiet, her heart pounding at the truth in Relia’s words.

Her fingers tightened slightly around Damian’s, and she exhaled shakily. "I don’t know how to tell him," she whispered. "What if I’m not enough? What if—"

"What if you are?" Relia interrupted firmly. "Stop doubting yourself. You’re more than enough. You always have been. He wouldn’t have done all of this if he didn’t see that."

Evelina opened her eyes, gazing down at Damian’s face. "You’re right," she murmured. "But I still wish he’d wake up so I could—"

"Tell him all of this?" Relia finished, her teasing edge returning. "Oh, don’t worry, Evie. You’ll get your chance. But maybe not tonight. He’s still out cold, after all."

Evelina laughed softly, brushing away the tears that had gathered at the corners of her eyes. "You’re impossible," she muttered.

"That’s what I’m here for," Relia quipped lightly. "Now, take a breath, get some rest, and save the grand confessions for when he’s actually awake. Trust me, he’ll want to hear it."

Evelina looked around the quiet room, stopping at Damian’s still body. "I can’t stay much longer," she whispered to herself, feeling both regret and resolve. "If anyone sees me here, it will ruin everything."

Reluctantly, she finished cleaning up, disposing of the basin and cloth in a corner.

Returning to Damian’s bedside, she placed her hand over his again. "Please wake up soon," she whispered, leaning in slightly. "I’m waiting for you, Damian."

Her voice trembled, carrying the vulnerability she had kept hidden for so long.

Evelina started to rise, preparing to leave, when a sudden grip on her wrist startled her. She gasped, her head snapping back to see Damian’s hand weakly clutching hers.

"Evelina..." he rasped in a hoarse voice, barely audible.

She froze, her heart leaping into her throat. "Damian?" she whispered in disbelief.

His fingers twitched against hers as he gripped her lightly. Slowly, his eyes fluttered open, revealing the familiar silver irises, though they were dulled with exhaustion.

His gaze found hers, searching for something.

"Do you..." he began, his voice a rough whisper, "really mean what you said?"
