Chapter 62: What’s the plan?

Evelina woke slowly, her eyelids fluttering open to the dim light filtering into the room. Her body ached, but the sharp pain that had once dominated her every breath was gone.

She exhaled deeply, relief washing over her as her wolf’s familiar voice filled her mind.

"Welcome back, sleeping beauty," Relia teased lightly. Her voice, though weak, carried a warmth that Evelina hadn’t realized she missed. "Decided to rejoin the world of the living, huh?"

Evelina smiled faintly, her hand brushing against the soft sheets. "Barely," she murmured. Her gaze wandered around the room. The cabin was warm and simple, its charming rustic style standing out against the impressive palace. "Where... where are we?"

"Not the palace, that’s for sure," Relia replied. "But you’re safe. Damian saved us, remember? Absorbed all that poison and pain."

Memories flickered in Evelina’s mind—the pit, Damian’s voice calling her name, his hands cradling her face. A wave of gratitude swelled in her chest, but it was accompanied by a pang of disappointment when she realized he wasn’t there.

She swung her legs over the edge of the bed, her body still sluggish but functional. "Where is he?"

"I don’t know, but we can find that out, right?" Relia replied. "Let’s not just sit here waiting."

Evelina pushed herself to her feet, her bare feet sinking into the worn rug beneath her. She moved slowly, taking in the space as she ventured out of the room.

She heard soft voices leading her to the kitchen, where Jasper was leaning on the counter, talking to someone who looked like a maid based on her clothes.

Jasper’s eyes lit up when he saw her. "Well, look who’s finally awake!" he exclaimed in relief. "You gave us quite the scare."

Evelina managed a small smile. "I’m fine now, thanks to Damian. And you too, of course" She glanced around the room, her brow furrowing. "Speaking of which... where is he?"

Jasper hesitated briefly, then cleared his throat. "His Highness went back to the palace. He asked me to make sure you stayed here until he returned."

"Oh," Evelina said, her shoulders sinking slightly. "When will he be back?"

"Soon, hopefully," Jasper replied. "But you’ve got to focus on getting your strength back." He turned to the maid. "Sophie, bring Lady Evelina some food, will you?"

Sophie nodded and bustled about, quickly setting a bowl of steaming soup and fresh bread on the table. Evelina sat down, her stomach growling at the sight of the food.

She hadn’t realized how hungry she was.

Jasper joined her at the table, his expression turning curious. "So... do you know how you ended up in that pit?" he asked, sounding both concerned and lighthearted at the same time.

Evelina frowned, trying to piece together the fragmented memories. "I remember going to my chambers," she said slowly. "I closed the door, and the next thing I knew... someone hit me. I blacked out. When I woke up, I was in the pit. And..." She paused, her voice dropping. "I’d been poisoned with wolfsbane."

Jasper’s jaw tightened, but he forced a smile. "Sounds like someone’s got it out for you, my lady. Don’t worry, though. His Highness will sort it out."

Evelina nodded, taking a bite of the soup. The warmth spread through her, chasing away some of the lingering coldness in her bones. "Do you think he’ll be back today?" she asked quietly.

Jasper shrugged, though his gaze was soft. "Hard to say. But if he doesn’t show up by morning, I’ll go check on him."

Evelina finished her meal in silence, her thoughts drifting to Damian. She could still sense the subtle connection between them, a comforting link that kept her steady even amid uncertainty.

Evelina finished her soup, feeling the warmth bring her comfort. She returned to the room where she had woken up. The soft bed quickly drew her back into a deep sleep, as her body continued to recover from her ordeal.

When she woke up again, sunlight poured through the window, warm and bright on the wooden floor.

Judging by its intensity, Evelina guessed it was already midday. She stretched, her muscles still sore but significantly stronger than before.

Sliding out of bed, she shook off the remnants of sleep and headed toward the living area.

As she approached, hushed voices stopped her in her tracks. Jasper and Sophie were engaged in a serious conversation, speaking in low but urgent voices.

"I don’t think I’m supposed to tell her," Jasper said, sounding strained.

"But she has the right to know," Sophie replied, her voice hinting frustration. "After all, it was in the process of saving her that he got sick. How long has he been out now?"

"Three days," Jasper admitted reluctantly. "And he wasn’t in great shape before that. We’d been searching the woods for over two days with little rest, and he had jumped into the pit when we found her without hesitation. I even offered, but he didn’t pay me any attention."

Evelina’s heart skipped a beat. Relia’s voice piped up in her mind, her usual sass absent. "Three days?" she murmured. "What are they talking about, Evie? Is it Damian? He’s been through all that for us? If he’s been out for three days, that... that doesn’t sound so good."

Evelina took a deep breath and stepped forward, clearing her throat.

Jasper and Sophie both jumped and turned their heads towards her, their faces quickly changing to a fake look of indifference.

"What’s going on?" Evelina asked firmly despite the anxiety bubbling beneath the surface.

Sophie’s eyes widened, and she stammered, "N-nothing, my lady. We were just—"

"Talking about supplies!" Jasper interjected smoothly, his easy smile slipping into place. "You know, for the cabin. Thought we might need more firewood and, uh, food."

Evelina crossed her arms, her sharp gaze narrowing on him. "Where is Damian?" she asked directly.

Jasper hesitated, but he recovered quickly. "He’s swamped at the palace, my lady. Things are... complicated there. He said he’d try to come see you as soon as possible."

Relia snorted in Evelina’s mind. "I knew he wasn’t going to say anything useful."

"Do you believe him?" Evelina asked inwardly.

"Not a chance," Relia replied.

"So... what’s the plan, Relia?"

"We go find our mate," Relia replied.
