Chapter 60: Out of the Pit...

"I’m not ready to die," Evelina whispered to herself.

Her body ached, her leg throbbed, and her throat burned from thirst. Every breath felt like a struggle, and her despair grew heavier with each passing second.

She stared at the faint light filtering through the pit’s opening, her heart sinking at the impossibility of reaching it.

Relia had been silent for what felt like an eternity. The wolf’s energy was stretched thin, leaving Evelina feeling more alone than ever.

Suddenly, a wave of energy surged through Evelina’s body, making her gasp. It wasn’t painful, but it was startling. Her muscles twitched involuntarily, and she managed to lift her head slightly, her eyes darting around the pit.

"What was that?" she whispered in a shaky voice.

Before she could make sense of it, the sensation came again—a strong, pulsing current that felt like a lifeline.

Relia suddenly stirred, her weak voice now filled with excitement. "He’s here," she said. "Our mate is here. I knew he would find us. I told you so."

"Damian is here?" Evelina asked weakly, her heart beating faster.

"Yes, Evie. He’s here," Relia confirmed, feeling a bit more energized.

As if on cue, she heard his voice, faint but unmistakable.

"Evelina!"

Her breath caught in her throat, tears welling in her eyes.

Another voice followed, Jasper’s, calling out, "Lady Evelina!"

Evelina tried to cry out in response, to let them know where she was, but her throat was so dry that no sound came. Feeling desperate, she gathered all the strength she had left.

Pushing herself off the wall, Evelina tried to stand, but her legs buckled under her. She fell to her side with a pained gasp, tears slipping down her cheeks.

"No, no, no," she cried inwardly.

Relia’s voice returned, soft and encouraging. "Don’t give up. He’s here. He’ll find us."

The voices above grew louder, but the words were muffled, like a distant echo. Evelina’s vision blurred as the darkness crept back in, her body threatening to surrender to the overwhelming fatigue.

Then, she heard it.

The sound of rushing wind, followed by a heavy thud that made the ground tremble slightly. Her eyes shot open briefly, and she caught a glimpse of a familiar figure kneeling beside her.

His hands cupped her face gently, his touch warm and comforting.

"Evelina," Damian murmured, his voice trembling with emotion. "I’m here."

Evelina’s chest tightened at the sound of his voice so close, his presence like a soothing balm to her frayed nerves. She struggled to keep her eyes open, her vision swimming but caught his silver eyes’ gaze on her.

"Damian," she whispered.

"Don’t talk," he said softly, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "I’ve got you now. You’re safe."

Their bond felt incredibly strong, giving her a brief moment of relief. She wanted to stay awake and keep holding on, but it was just too hard.

Her eyelids became heavier, and no matter how hard she tried, they finally closed. The last thing she saw was the intensity of Damian’s silver eyes before everything went dark.

Damian crouched over Evelina’s unconscious body, his gaze fixed on her pale face. She was too still, her breaths shallow.

Seeing her in this state made him feel scared, but he fought against that fear and focused on getting out of the pit. He lifted her lifeless body onto his shoulder, making sure to do it gently but firmly

Straightening, he glanced upward, the jagged edge of the pit far above them. Jasper’s figure hovered at the rim, peering down with wide eyes.

"You got a plan to get out, Your Highness?" Jasper called.

Speaking inwardly to Storm, Damian asked, "How’s this looking for us?"

Storm growled softly. "You should’ve thought of that before jumping in without a plan."

"Pffft, like you wouldn’t have done the same,"

Damian retorted.

Storm huffed, agreeing silently.

Damian closed his eyes for a moment and tapped into his wolf energy. When he opened them again, his silver irises glowed a bright red. His Alpha aura pushed outwards, exuding raw power.

The energy from Storm strengthened him further, filling his muscles with a primal force.

Taking a deep breath, Damian bent his knees and jumped, creating a deep crater in the pit’s floor. Evelina’s weight felt light compared to the adrenaline flowing through him; pushing him forward.

He reached about a third of the pit’s height before letting his claws extend, digging them into the rocky wall. His legs found footing, stabilizing him and Evelina before he launched again, repeating the motion like a predator scaling its prey.

With each leap, Damian pushed himself harder, his muscles straining yet holding strong. Gravel and dirt tumbled down with every move he made, his claws digging deep into the rocky surface. The top of the pit was getting closer with each effort.

Finally, he got to the edge and Jasper leaned forward to grab Evelina.

"Got her!" Jasper shouted, pulling Evelina up and laying her gently on the ground.

Damian hauled himself out of the pit, exhaling sharply as his feet hit solid ground. His chest heaved as he tried to steady his breathing, the exertion taking its toll despite his enhanced strength.

"You did it, Your Highness," Jasper remarked, his typical humor replaced by a sense of wonder. "You saved her."

Damian nodded, brushing off the praise as he moved to Evelina’s side. "Let’s get out of here," he said firmly, scooping her back into his arms.

The two men retraced their steps, weaving through the dense forest until they reached the clearing where their horses were tied. Damian secured Evelina onto his mount with care, wrapping a cloak around her to shield her from the chill morning air.

As they entered Arcadia’s territory, Damian was filled with worry. Evelina’s condition was critical, and the circumstances of her disappearance and the pit screamed foul play.

He couldn’t risk taking her to the palace—not until he knew who was behind this.

"She needs urgent medical attention," Jasper argued, his voice breaking through Damian’s thoughts.

Damian’s eyes narrowed. "I’ll arrange for that. But we can’t take her to the palace. She didn’t end up in that pit by accident, Jasper. Someone planned this."

Jasper frowned but didn’t argue further. "So where are we going?"
