Chapter 58: In Danger...
Evelina’s foot slipped, sending a jolt of fear through her chest as she desperately searched to find another hold. The rock under her hands was wet and stained with her blood, making it slippery. Her fingers continued to slide, and her wolf’s voice broke through her growing panic.
"Uh-oh," Relia remarked dryly, though the tension in her voice betrayed her worry.
For a brief moment, Evelina was suspended in midair, as if gravity had paused and she was floating in a terrifying stillness.
Then, suddenly, she fell with great force.
The wind whipped past her ears as she descended rapidly, and the height she had gained flashed before her eyes.
Her body slammed into the hard ground below with a sickening thud. Pain exploded in her leg, a sharp, blinding agony that left her gasping. A snapping sound followed, echoing in her ears.
"ARRRGGGHHH!" Evelina screamed, overwhelmed by the intense pain that forced tears to roll down her cheeks. She struggled to breathe, taking quick, shallow breaths as she fought to regain her composure.
For a long moment, she remained still, feeling the pain of her injuries pinning her in place. When she finally managed to speak, her voice was rough and weak. "Fucking hell..."
Relia spoke softly, asking hesitantly, "It’s broken, isn’t it?"
Evelina let out a bitter laugh while tears streamed down her face. "Should I even dignify that with a response?"
After a moment of silence, Relia responded, trying to sound as straightforward as possible, "Just... don’t make any sudden move."
Evelina gritted her teeth. "Why the hell aren’t we healing?"
"The wolfsbane," Relia explained in frustration. "It’s still in our system. I can either fight it to keep you alive, or I can focus on healing the break—but not both. Your call."
"So... we’re fucked," Evelina muttered, her laugh mixed with despair.
"Pretty much," Relia admitted. "I can try something, though. Knock you out and use whatever energy I’ve got to get your leg to an endurable level. It won’t fix everything, but it’ll help."
Evelina paused, feeling another sharp wave of pain course through her as she shifted slightly. She couldn’t hold back the agonized scream that tore from her throat. "Do it," she rasped. "Do whatever you need to."
"You’ll be okay," Relia said gently, trying to assure her. "I’m here for you."
As darkness started to creep over Evelina’s vision, she focused on the faint warmth of her wolf, feeling comforted by the fact that she wasn’t completely alone.
Gradually, her consciousness faded, leaving behind only the steady reassurance of Relia’s soft words: "I’ll look after you, Evie. Just rest."
************
Damian and Jasper made their way back to the palace, looking tired and serious. The moonlight created long shadows on the path as they walked, their clothes messy and muddy from searching the woods all night.
Despite their relentless effort, they had not found any trace of Evelina.
Damian was a mess.
His silver eyes, which were usually bright and intense, looked tired from lack of sleep. He hadn’t slept in almost 48 hours, and every hour that passed without any news about Evelina was making it harder for him to stay sane.
"Anything you need, Your Highness?" Jasper asked softly as they approached the main gates.
Damian shook his head curtly. "No." His voice sounded empty, and his mind seemed to be elsewhere.
Inside, doubt and despair clawed at him.
What if she had left?
He couldn’t shake the possibility that Selene had threatened Evelina, forcing her to leave the palace and disappear. Maybe Evelina had decided she couldn’t stay, not with everything weighing on her.
She’s gone. The thought hit him hard, causing a pain in his chest that he couldn’t ignore.
As they reached the palace steps, Damian’s body suddenly jerked forward, as though he had missed a step. He stumbled but managed to steady himself, pausing mid-stride.
"What was that?" he muttered aloud, his hand gripping the railing.
He had no time to think before it happened again. He felt the air being pulled from his lungs, leaving him breathless. His body tightened as a wave of energy moved through him—weak but unmistakable.
"Storm," Damian called inwardly. "What’s happening?"
For a moment, his wolf was silent.
Suddenly, Storm’s voice rang out. "It’s her. Our mate. Evelina. She’s alive, but she’s in danger."
Damian felt a rush of energy, momentarily forgetting his fatigue. Without thinking, he turned and mindlinked Jasper. "Meet me at the gates with the horses. Hurry!"
Jasper didn’t ask any questions. "I’m on it, Your Highness."
A few minutes later, Damian and Jasper galloped through the palace gates, trying to follow the faint pull of their mate bond. Though the connection was weak, it was enough for Storm to lead them.
"She’s close," Storm growled. "Just follow."
Damian urged his horse on. His bond with Evelina faded with each mile, but he wouldn’t stop. They continued until they reached a very thick forest.
And then, abruptly, the bond vanished.
Damian pulled his horse to a halt, his breaths ragged. "No..." he said, sounding frustrated. He got off the saddle and hit the nearest tree with his fist. The bark broke, leaving a deep dent.
"She’s close," Storm insisted. "I know she is."
Damian’s fists clenched as he struck another tree, the wood cracking beneath his knuckles. "Where are you, Evelina?" he roared, his voice echoing through the forest.
Jasper dismounted, approaching cautiously. "Your Highness," he called cautiously. "We’ll find her. We just need to keep looking."
Damian felt the energy leave his body as the adrenaline wore off, replaced by a heavy sense of hopelessness. He leaned his forehead against the tree and whispered softly, "I can’t lose her."
Jasper put a hand on his shoulder, his typical playful attitude changed to a calm support. "We won’t."
As night approached, the two of them decided to camp for the night. Jasper started a small fire, and the flames flickered, creating shadows on Damian’s worried face.
Damian stared into the fire, his thoughts swirling. "I don’t know if it’s just the mate bond," he admitted in a low voice. "But I feel something for her—something I’ve never felt before."
Jasper raised a brow but stayed silent, letting Damian continue.
"She’s in my head, Jasper," Damian confessed. "Even before the bond flared, I was drawn to her. It’s not just the bond... it’s her."
Jasper smirked slightly. "Sounds like you’ve got it bad, Your Highness."
Damian let out a soft laugh, but he still looked deep in thought. "Maybe I do."
The fire popped and crackled while the two men sat quietly, feeling the heavy burden of the day. Damian leaned against a tree, his eyes closing as tiredness finally took over.
**********
When dawn broke, the bond flared again, faint but unmistakable.
Damian’s eyes snapped open, the surge of energy jolting him awake. He shook Jasper’s shoulder. "She’s close. Get up."
