Chapter 173: An-all Out War?
The first rays of dawn filtered through the curtains, casting a warm glow over the room.
Evelina woke up feeling warm and comfortable next to Damian. He had his arms wrapped around her tightly in a possessive manner, with his hand resting gently on her hip, while he breathed steadily and peacefully.
Her heart softened as she tilted her head to look at him. His face was peaceful, and the sharp edges of his usual intensity softened in sleep.
Relia purred in her mind. "Look at him. He’s such a big, bad Alpha, but right now, he’s just your oversized puppy."
Evelina rolled her eyes internally but couldn’t help the small smile tugging at her lips.
"You should bite his nose," Relia suggested slyly. "Or maybe his ear. He’s asking for it, sleeping so smugly."
Evelina stifled a laugh, shaking her head slightly. "What’s with you and bites?"
"Durrhhh... I’m just a wolf."
As if sensing her movement, Damian stirred, his grip tightening around her. His silver eyes blinked open slowly, still heavy with sleep, and locked onto hers.
"Morning," he murmured in a husky voice.
"Morning," she replied softly.
A slow smile spread across his face. "I could wake up like this every day."
Her cheeks warmed, and she shook her head. "Don’t get used to it."
"Oh, I will." He nuzzled her neck, his stubble grazing her skin. "You’re not getting away from me, Evelina."
Relia practically swooned. "Mate talk. Ugh, I’m such a sucker for it."
Evelina ignored her wolf and placed a hand on Damian’s chest, pushing him slightly. "We need to get up."
Damian groaned dramatically, burying his face in her hair. "No, we don’t. Stay here. Stay with me."
She laughed softly. "As tempting as that sounds, we both know Jasper and his bad timing will come looking for us sooner or later."
Damian sighed, pulling back slightly but not releasing her. "Fine. But if he interrupts us, I’m throwing him out."
Evelina arched a brow. "You’d throw Jasper out?"
"For you? In a heartbeat."
She rolled her eyes but couldn’t suppress the grin tugging at her lips.
They laid in silence for a few moments, the peacefulness of the morning wrapping around them like a warm blanket. But eventually, Evelina broke it.
"When do you think Kyle will leave?" she asked carefully.
Damian tensed slightly, his jaw tightening. "Why? Are you worried about him?"
Evelina blinked, surprised by his tone. "No. I’m just... wondering how long we have before he starts causing more chaos."
Damian’s lips twitched. "As long as he doesn’t bother you again, I can tolerate his presence. Barely."
Relia snickered. "Barely? You’d probably send him flying through a wall if he so much as looked at us wrong."
Evelina bit back a laugh.
Damian exhaled, brushing his thumb over her cheek. "And Luther?"
Her expression hardened. "We need to do something. He’s already ahead of us, Damian. He’s clever and calculating. And if we’re not careful, he’ll make his next move before we even realise it. Plus, it’s just 3 days till I face the council with proof."
Damian’s eyes darkened. "Not if I can help it."
Relia sighed dramatically. "Cue the Alpha male growl fest. ’I’ll protect you, mate.’ Blah, blah, blah."
Evelina stifled another laugh, as her situation wasn’t exactly funny at the moment. Still, she pushed herself up, forcing Damian to release her. "Come on. If we’re going to find evidence against Luther, we need to start preparing."
Damian groaned but followed her lead, dragging himself out of bed.
They made their way to the bathroom, their laughter and teasing filling the small space as they helped each other clean up.
Evelina splashed water at Damian’s chest when he made a particularly smug comment about her being unable to resist him.
"Careful," he warned, a devilish grin spreading across his face. "You’re playing with fire."
"Maybe I like the heat," she shot back, her own grin daring him to retaliate.
By the time they finished, they were both flushed and laughing.
Evelina stood in front of the mirror, adjusting her dress as Damian tied the laces on his shirt. She glanced at him out of the corner of her eye. "You’re surprisingly cheerful this morning."
He smirked. "I woke up with you. How could I not be?"
Relia let out an exaggerated groan. "The cheesiness is suffocating. I’m going to need therapy after this."
Evelina shook her head, smiling despite herself.
Just as Damian was fastening the last button on his shirt, a knock sounded at the door.
Damian frowned, his instincts immediately sharpening. He moved to open the door, his expression darkening when he saw Jasper standing there, his face tight with urgency.
"Jasper," Damian said cautiously. "What is it?"
Jasper stepped inside without preamble, his gaze flicking to Evelina briefly before locking onto Damian. "We have a problem."
Damian’s jaw tightened. "What kind of problem?"
Jasper’s expression grew grim. "The rival pack at the northern border. They’re escalating tensions. If we don’t address it soon, we could be looking at an all-out war."
Evelina’s stomach dropped.
Damian’s silver eyes darkened, his shoulders tensing. "Call the council. We’ll need to address this immediately."
Jasper hesitated. "There’s already a meeting scheduled. They’re expecting you both."
Evelina blinked. "Me?"
Jasper nodded. "The council believes you may have... insight. Given your background."
Damian frowned but said nothing, his gaze flicking to Evelina.
She exhaled sharply. "Alright. Let’s go."
———
The council chamber buzzed with tension as Damian and Evelina entered.
The elders were seated around the long table, their expressions ranging from wary to outright suspicious as they glanced at Evelina.
"The situation is dire," one of the elders began. "The northern pack is demanding territory that falls within Arcadian borders. They claim it’s rightfully theirs."
Another elder scoffed. "They’re testing our strength. If we give them an inch, they’ll take a mile."
Evelina listened carefully, her mind racing.
Damian spoke up, his tone commanding. "We won’t allow our borders to be compromised, but we need a solution that doesn’t lead to unnecessary bloodshed."
The room fell into tense silence.
Then, Evelina straightened. "What about the land’s resources?"
