Chapter 420: Chapter 299: The Plan Succeeds

Hongji’s father lay drunkenly asleep in bed, with a gentle woman on the other side, completely unaware of her presence as he was engrossed in a beautiful dream.

The woman looked at the man sleeping in front of her and revealed an even more triumphant smile. This man looked somewhat old, about the same age as her father, and she wondered if he was handsome. Middle-aged men could also be charming, perhaps because he hadn’t worked outdoors much, his skin was whiter and younger-looking than her father’s.

She thought that her eldest cousin and his father looked somewhat alike. The idea she had earlier was vindictive, and at this moment, it became more resolute, entering their family would enable her to take better revenge.

She also thought about the future luxuries she could enjoy. Marrying an old man, so what? As long as she wouldn’t have to do household chores like now, or work the fields outside. Someone would provide for her, and she wouldn’t have to worry about food or money, feeling utterly delighted!

Hongji’s father, perhaps feeling the presence of a beauty in his drunken dream, rolled over and hugged her, then settled back into stillness.

The woman..., the movement of the man made the woman on the bed stiffen for a moment, her heart filled with timidity!

Outside the woman’s room..., hearing no movement inside, she slyly cracked open the door a bit, where those plotting her success patiently waited, occasionally peeping outside, waiting for Mrs. Lai to take the bait.

The woman’s mother thought today might be the day she could push her daughter to a man about her own age. Thinking of her daughter’s future lavish life and financial support for her parental home, she planned to trick some money from them today, secretly feeling joyful.

The woman’s elder brother silently beamed with joy. His sister had grown so old and still was not married, which was a pressure, and so was his unmarried brother. After today, that pressure would be gone, anticipating his new status as the Uncle.

The woman’s younger brother, thinking about his sister getting married today, believed the plan was excellent. With the gift money, he could afford a bride.

The woman’s father, having drunk quite a bit, was slightly intoxicated. After being fed sobering soup by his family, he lay on the bed to rest, waiting for the drama to unfold....

Mrs. Lai, on her parental side, her mother and sister-in-law chatted with her. Besides flattering words, there were probing ones, asking how much money she had saved over the years, boasting that her son had bought an estate and made a fortune, surely he must have donated a considerable sum, after all, shouldn’t she be in charge of household management?

Mrs. Lai actually wanted to do so too. Some things she could say, while others she dared not, fearing loss of face. She surely noticed her parental family’s greedy gaze; over the years, her family had become wealthy and had financially supported her parental home significantly.

She too wished to control the finances, but no longer had the ability.

Mrs. Lai’s mother and sister-in-law knew some of her situations too and whispered in her ear that she must secure control over the finances, warning her not to let all the money be used for her parental home.

Mrs. Lai sighed inwardly, not daring to share all her misgivings with her parental family. The couple’s big secret wasn’t even disclosed to them, perhaps subconsciously feeling her parental family was unreliable.

Mrs. Lai mentioned to her mother and sister-in-law that the family was facing financial difficulties at home, compelling her to give the money she had prepared to these two.

She wasn’t foolish either, only carrying several taels on her, having already experienced her parental family’s boundless greed.

Her mother and sister-in-law happily accepted the silver, and thinking of soon receiving another sum, they were even more eager to keep Mrs. Lai around.

Mrs. Lai thought it was because she had given money that her mother and sister-in-law were so warm, basking in the familial affection.

A young maid secretly peeked through the door crack; she was instructed by the young wife to eavesdrop.

An hour later, Mrs. Lai checked the time and felt it was time to go home, asking her maid to help her to her cousin’s house.

The girl’s mother and family saw Mrs. Lai coming and exchanged glances of evasion, without a strategy yet to put all the blame on their son-in-law.

They dared not speak the truth but claimed that Hongji’s father, who was drunk, was helped to a room to sleep.

They mentioned a room, which happened to be the room of their youngest son, a young man yet to marry.

Upon opening the door and not finding anyone, everyone pretended to be surprised, claiming they had definitely helped him into this room.

The girl’s younger brother chimed in. The whole family, motivated by the scheme, naturally hoped to gain a lot of wealth, with the young man looking forward to using the gift money to marry.

"Impossible, people don’t just disappear like that. Maybe you’ve made a mistake, right?"

"There’s no mistake, it’s our own house, our own room, how could we be wrong?"
