Chapter 92: Chapter 91 The One Who Does as They Please_1

Pain.

Katerina had never thought she would one day be in so much pain that she couldn’t move. Even when she was hit by a tank shell in the Middle East, she hadn’t experienced such intense suffering. Her brain was completely dominated by the pain, losing control over her body.

By the time Katerina had somewhat recovered, she still couldn’t get up; only by curling up could she manage to lessen the pain in her stomach. She breathed carefully, puzzled by what kind of attack she had encountered, and slowly took out her phone with her right hand to call Okayama Buji.

"Hello, what’s up?"

"Dio has come looking for us, hurry over."

"What?! Okay! I’m on my way!"

Okayama Buji was so startled by the news that he jerked the steering wheel on the spot, almost colliding with the car behind him. He didn’t care about that; he floored the gas pedal, hung up Katerina’s call, and dialed the Metropolitan Police Department. He asked them to send reinforcements to Emily’s house. He ordered traffic control within a one-kilometer radius centered on Emily’s house to see if they could catch Dio. Then he called an ambulance.

After Okayama Buji set all this in motion, he took a few deep breaths to calm himself. No matter how urgent, he knew he must adhere to traffic rules. An accident would only delay his arrival at Emily’s house. He suppressed his impatience. The road ahead seemed extraordinarily long.

At Emily’s house entrance, Okayama Buji quickly got out of the car, gun at the ready, and peered inside. The lights on the first and second floors were on, with no figures by the windows. Okayama Buji rushed to the door.

Dio had knocked Katerina out with ease. His strength was beyond imagination, and Okayama Buji couldn’t afford to be careless. As for waiting for reinforcements from the Metropolitan Police Department, he was worried about Katerina and Emily inside; he felt compelled to enter.

Okayama Buji reached the door, pressed his back against the wall, fired at the lock with his silenced pistol, and then kicked the door open. He crouched down, leaned in, and pointed his gun inside.

...

The light in the living room on the ground floor was very bright, and no one could be seen in the entryway. Small and large shoes were neatly arranged on the shoe rack by the entrance.

He cautiously moved along the wall, swiftly went upstairs, and saw Katerina curled up on the floor in front of the sofa in the living room. This woman, who was always tough in his eyes, now appeared exceptionally vulnerable.

Okayama Buji scanned the surroundings and whispered, "Katerina, are you all right?"

"I’m fine. Go check on Emily. Dio took her inside," Katerina replied with difficulty.

Taken inside... A bad thought crossed Okayama Buji’s mind. Could Dio have a thing for little girls? If so, Emily is in terrible danger!

He gripped his gun tighter and immediately rushed to the door of Emily’s bedroom, shot the lock, then rolled into the room shouting, "Don’t m—"

Before he could utter the word "move," he heard a whimpering sound.

Okayama Buji saw Emily with her hands and feet bound behind her with a flimsy bedsheet, her small mouth stuffed with a colorful sock. Her right foot wore colorful striped socks; her left foot was bare, and under the light, it shimmered with a jade-like luster. Okayama Buji had every reason to believe the sock in her mouth belonged to her left foot. And around Emily’s mouth, a black beard was painted.

"MMMPH!"

Emily saw Okayama Buji, her heart racing even more, thrashing about like a fish out of water.

"HAHA."

Okayama Buji’s tense heart relaxed, and he couldn’t help but burst into laughter, immediately met by Emily’s murderous gaze. He instantly stifled his smile, stepped forward to help remove the sock, and said with a serious face, "Dio deserves to die for doing such a cruel thing!"

"I’m going to kill that bastard Dio! I must kill him!" Her mouth freed, Emily immediately let out a helpless roar.

For the first time in her life, she had experienced such humiliation—not just being tied up, but having her own sock stuffed in her mouth. More than that, Dio had disdained my intelligence, the very thing I prided myself on, trampling it underfoot! That bastard clearly didn’t see me as a threat at all, deciding I wasn’t even worth eliminating! This isn’t about money anymore. Even if the Metropolitan Police Department doesn’t pay a dime, I’ll pay out of my own pocket! I’ll do it even if it means financial ruin, just to catch Dio and wash away this humiliation!

Seeing the exasperated Emily, Okayama Buji tried to suppress his laughter to avoid becoming an unintended casualty, and shifted the topic, "Katerina is still outside."

"Right! That guy must have used a weapon similar to a sonic device against Katerina!"

As soon as Emily’s hands and feet were untied, she jumped off the bed, only to immediately freeze in place as she felt a tingling numbness in her feet. The anger in her mind gradually subsided as her head cleared.

"Dio has always been that kind of criminal with far-reaching schemes; his sudden appearance must have a reason."

"What could that reason be?" Curiosity was written all over Okayama Buji’s face.

Emily shook her head; she hadn’t yet figured out the specific reason. The one thing she was clear about was that Dio’s physique, facial features, and height might not be accurate—he was likely wearing a disguise, a layer of "skin." This would explain why Dio left no fingerprints behind at any of his crime scenes. If he had a layer of "skin" on the outside, it wasn’t possible for fingerprints to be left behind. As for the mysterious weapon, Emily surmised that Dio folding his arms across his chest was likely a feint to cover his use of the weapon. His weapon was hidden inside the "skin" on his hands. Moreover, the weapon had a limited range of attack. If there were no limitations, he wouldn’t have let Katerina get close before using the weapon to bring her down. But the weapon’s penetrating power was strong enough to disregard Katerina’s bulletproof vest, causing her pain that made it impossible to get up.

Thinking this, Emily asked, "Has the ambulance arrived yet?"

Okayama Buji shook his head.

"Then what are you still standing around here for? Go outside and have a look!" Emily suddenly felt that this guy was unbelievably stupid. Of course, when she was in a bad mood, even the sound of someone breathing a little too loudly was a fault in her eyes.

Okayama Buji hurried outside, not daring to retort.

Emily recuperated, ran to Katerina’s side, and said with a serious face, "Don’t worry, I will definitely catch Dio. He will see just how formidable our detective duo is, and we’ll wash away today’s disgrace!"

"MM."

Katerina managed a smile, but no sweat was visible. Her specially-made bulletproof vest offered comprehensive protection, from head to toe. Only in an era of arms races, where all sorts of bizarre military concepts were experimented with, could such an amazing bulletproof vest have been created.

Emily held her friend’s hand, her mind beginning to replay and deduce Dio’s motive for being here. Could it be that my recent actions somehow touched a nerve with Dio, prompting such a strong reaction? Or perhaps he wants to use me to achieve some goal? Emily was wracking her brain, pondering Dio’s true intentions.

「Elsewhere, Aozawa returned home.」

He had approached the special investigation team on a whim, without any motive for personal gain.
