Chapter 629: Chapter 516: Oguma Hideyama, A Great Fire Dyes Half the Sky Red

Japan’s weather is fickle. In the morning the sky was clear and cloudless, but by the afternoon, a light rain had started to fall.

During the rush hour, Tokyo’s streets were bustling with people and cars. The unexpected rain caught everyone off guard, and weary office workers held their briefcases over their heads as they hurried along, looking utterly bedraggled.

"What a vibrant scene."

In a roadside café, Yutian Zi, dressed in a suit, stirred his coffee and looked out at the chaotic scene with such sentiment.

"Yes," nodded Oguma Hideyama, sitting opposite him, the Chief of Division One of the Public Security Bureau, not really agreeing with Yutian. The office workers outside certainly didn’t feel vibrant.

Yutian Zi turned his gaze from the window and looked at the thirty-something Oguma Hideyama, "The citizens are still vibrant, but the military has rotted to the core. The Cabinet has received a whistleblowing letter about serious corruption within the Land Guard, and after discussion, it has been decided that the Ministry of Justice will form an investigative team to look into the claims in the letter."

"Is that so?" Oguma Hideyama first showed surprise, then seemed to realize, "No wonder our Director mentioned at noon about reassigning people from each department. It was for this investigation team."

"Oguma, I hope you will join this investigation team," Yu Tian said in a calm tone.

Oguma Hideyama knew he had no room to refuse and responded respectfully, "Yes, sir!"

He was able to serve as the Chief of Division One because of Yutian Zi’s support; favors received meant work to be done.

"I will secure you a leadership position within the investigation team. However, you and your team will not be investigating the content of the whistleblowing letter, but instead, you will have another important task." Yutian Zi took a sip of his coffee, looking pleased, "This coffee is quite good."

"Yes, sir! Please instruct me," Oguma Hideyama said in a lowered voice while maintaining his bow.

"Relax, it’s not work hours nor the place for it," Yutian Zi said with a slight smile to reassure him, but the expression on his face showed he enjoyed the other’s respect. He continued, "Your task is to secretly investigate within the team the embezzlement of military funds invested in East Field Construction Corporation by the Land Guard."

Those in charge always had a way of saying things that made them seem amiable, but you’d be in trouble if you took it too seriously.

"Embezzle... military funds for investment?" Oguma Hideyama looked up, shocked and incredulous.

Like many others, he had always thought the military was a purer place compared to the political field. He did not expect these rough men to have the nerve to divert military funds for investment—sheer greed!

But then he grew anxious. If it were an ordinary corruption case, even though he would certainly face opposition from the military, he would still have the courage to investigate.

However, this matter was so sensitive that even the Cabinet only dared to investigate secretly. If the Land Guard became aware of his true intentions, they might take desperate actions against him.

The military trained killers, didn’t lack weapons for killing, nor lacked the courage to do so.

"Yes, who could have thought? Military funds, meant for national defense, and they dared to divert them heedlessly, which is absolutely insane!" Yutian Zi rebuked and said gravely, "That’s why we must gather evidence and bring them to justice. I’ve been pondering, and only Oguma can shoulder this responsibility."

"Yes, sir! With such confidence from you, Mr. Yu Tian, I will not disappoint you!" Although Oguma Hideyama was extremely reluctant, he had no choice but to agree.

With such a big matter at hand, once Yutian Zi approached him, there was no chance for refusal.

"Excellent!" Yutian Zi nodded, satisfied, and complimented with a smile, "I knew I had chosen the right man. Oguma, you really do have the sense of responsibility and courage."

Oguma Hideyama forced out a barely noticeable smile.

Damn it, I don’t have the courage to refuse you.

"The investigation team will likely split into six groups to investigate the Staff Director Department and the Staff Director Departments of the five area teams simultaneously. I will arrange for you to take charge of the northern area team where I have already planted an undercover agent to assist you," Yutian Zi gave him some good news.

Oguma Hideyama breathed a sigh of relief. Often the most fortified bastions fall from within. With an undercover agent to assist him, at least his personal safety would be somewhat more assured, "Yes, sir! I understand. If there’s any other information, please inform me, Mr. Yu Tian."

"The whistleblower claims that the actual controller behind East Field Construction Corporation is Aoyama Xiu Xin. Aoyama Xiu Xin is also in Hokkaido. Be wary of this man," Yutian Zi disclosed another crucial piece of information.

Oguma Hideyama’s heart, which had just eased, leaped into his throat. Aoyama Xiu Xin wasn’t an easy man to deal with; the previous Public Security Bureau Director, Dubian Youli, had been taken down by him.

"Yes, sir! Thank you for the warning, I will be extremely cautious!" Oguma Hideyama said earnestly.

Meanwhile, Sapporo, just off work Aoyama Xiu Xin turned down all social functions to go home and rest.

After all, he hadn’t slept a wink last night.

His sister-in-law’s lovely legs were his warmest harbor.

"Ding-ling-ling! Ding-ling-ling!"

The telephone rang in the empty living room.

Aoyama Xiu Xin, lying on his sister-in-law’s legs, didn’t move but gestured, and Aoyama Haruko gave him the phone.

"Moshi moshi, this is Aoyama Xiu Xin."

"Mr. Aoyama, a message just in from Director Ito. The Cabinet has already called him for a discussion, showing him an anonymous letter accusing high-ranking officials in the Land Guard of corruption. They plan to form an investigative task force under the Ministry of Justice to enter the Land Guard and secretly investigate without public disclosure and sought Director Ito’s opinion."
