Chapter 598: 239 Years in the Mountains (Part 2)_2
Master Xuan Tian knew that Mr. Yu Shan appreciated talent, so he said, "Not at all. This female benefactor has a benevolent heart; she is a person favored by the heavens."
This was the first time Mr. Yu Shan had heard such a statement, "Favored? Is being unable to predict one’s fate considered favor from the heavens?" Mr. Yu Shan thought Master Xuan Tian was deceiving him.
Master Xuan Tian nodded and said, "It is indeed heaven’s favor towards her. Not being able to see her fate proves that her life is in her own hands. It is often said that fate is predetermined, but isn’t a predetermined life boring? Wouldn’t you agree?"
Mr. Yu Shan laughed heartily, "You are right, I was previously caught in a delusion." People always believe in fate, so they like to have their fortunes told. In reality, fate is always in one’s own hands, otherwise, how would the saying ’man can conquer destiny’ exist!
Master Xuan Tian had grown accustomed to Mr. Yu Shan’s manner. The two chatted for a while longer before Master Xuan Tian took his leave.
Mr. Yu Shan entered the studio and looked deeply at Yueyao.
Yueyao put down her paintbrush and asked, "Sir, what’s the matter?"
Mr. Yu Shan smiled and shook his head, "Have you finished the painting?"
Yueyao shook her head, "Not yet. Sir, I always struggle with painting the rain." Yueyao had previously painted only still life and now found it difficult to capture the dynamics of such scenes.
Mr. Yu Shan smiled. It was far better for Yueyao to acknowledge her weakness and work around it rather than blunder forward blindly. Knowing her weaknesses and exploiting her strengths were fundamental qualities of a great painter. After all, even great painters were not perfect; they always had their weaknesses.
Mr. Yu Shan smilingly said, "The liveliness of the rain can be expressed through its interaction with the elements around it, allowing for imaginative space."
Yueyao seemed to half understand. To her, painting was simply painting; she could not quite grasp how one could be led to wander in thought by a mere scene.
Mr. Yu Shan laughed, "When you reach that level, you will naturally understand too."
Yueyao nodded, "Sir, I will work hard."
Mr. Yu Shan shook his head, "There’s no need to push yourself too hard. Knowing when to ease up is often more effective. When you have free time, you could walk in the mountains or come and join me for tea and a chat. A relaxed mind is the best state to be in."
Yueyao thought for a moment and then said, "It would be best if Master Xuan Tian were here." Previously, Yueyao had thought Mr. Yu Shan was a lofty figure, the person she admired the most. It was only after spending more time with him that she realized Mr. Yu Shan talked a lot; he could keep talking nonstop all morning if you were willing to listen.
If Mr. Yu Shan always discussed useful and serious matters, Yueyao wouldn’t mind keeping him company not just for a morning, but every day. However, Mr. Yu Shan often digressed mid-conversation and even broached topics not suitable for young ladies, which tremendously vexed Yueyao.
Mr. Yu Shan regretted, "Not cute at all."
At this tone, Yueyao’s mouth twitched. If others were to see the Mr. Yu Shan, whose reputation preceded him, acting like this, she wondered if they would be as disappointed as she was.
Seeing Yueyao’s expression, Mr. Yu Shan laughed and said, "If there’s anything you don’t understand, you can go directly to Master Xuan Tian. I believe he would be very happy to guide you."
Yueyao hesitated slightly before asking, "Really?" Once she confirmed Mr. Yu Shan was serious, her joy knew no bounds. Receiving guidance from Master Xuan Tian was a great fortune for her.
No one from the Lian family had managed to gather any information at the Zhaohua Temple. Lady Lian looked very displeased, "How could this be?"
The messenger felt quite wronged.
Maternal Aunt Su chimed in from the side, "Is the Third Miss of the Luo Family also on the mountain?"
The reply came back, "No. We only know that Third Young Lady is on the mountain, but as for what she is doing there, we couldn’t find out." Zhaohua Temple, being an Imperial Temple, definitely had strict management and information was not easily gathered.
Maternal Aunt Su frowned as well. In fact, she knew when Yueyao had almost moved everything out of Lanxi Courtyard that Yueyao was not planning to return to the Lian family. Maternal Aunt Su actually thought this was for the best; the residence had returned to its former calm without Yueyao. If Yueyao were to return, the residence would surely be stormy again.
Maternal Aunt Su didn’t believe Yueyao would be the type to meekly surrender. Madam had never given up on the wealth in Yueyao’s possession; should she truly provoke Yueyao, it would surely be to Madam’s detriment, but Maternal Aunt Su knew better than to voice these thoughts. She sighed to herself, blaming it on the Third Young Lady’s vulnerable appearance when she returned, which had led Madam to consider all her possessions as her own. Now that those items had vanished, it felt like digging into Madam’s heart!
Maternal Aunt Su’s only hope now was that Third Young Lady wouldn’t come back, or at least not for the next two years. Considering Old Master’s intentions, once Eldest Young Master got married, the future master of the house would undoubtedly be Eldest Young Madam, and then she could relax more.
Unable to come to any solution after discussing, Maternal Aunt Su was prepared to return to her own courtyard. But halfway there, she changed her path and went to see Yuehuan instead.
Yuehuan was doing needlework. Hearing that Maternal Aunt Su was coming, she quickly went out to welcome her into the house. Seeing Yuehuan engaged in embroidery, Maternal Aunt Su said, "Young lady, you shouldn’t always be sewing; it’s very hard on the eyes." She herself had done a lot of needlework and now her eyes were not as good as they used to be.
Yuehuan smiled, "It’s alright; I’m just doing it to pass the time." She actually wanted to read a book, but Maternal Aunt Su didn’t want her reading too much, claiming it distracted the mind, especially forbidding her from reading miscellaneous books.
After saying this, Yuehuan did not speak again.
Maternal Aunt Su felt very sad inside. She knew her relationship with Yuehuan had become strained because of the dowry issue; from then on, the mother-daughter relationship worsened, and Yuehuan was no longer the sweet, obedient daughter who used to snuggle up to her.
