Chapter 586: 233 Madam Ping is pregnant

Before I knew it, summer had arrived, bringing sweltering heat. It was so hot that no one wanted to move; simply moving around caused one to sweat, and everyone longed to nestle in rooms filled with blocks of ice.

Zhuang Ruolan was pregnant, and the doctor along with the experienced midwife said that the pregnant lady’s room should not have too many ice blocks, as catching a cold would be serious.

Zhuang Ruolan knew that catching a cold and taking medication would be bad for the baby. But the weather was unbearably hot, and she was feeling languid. Even the news of her clothing store making a huge sale and earning a great deal of money couldn’t lift her spirits.

Cai Yun suggested, "My lady, Miss Yueyao has been learning for so long, it’s time to let her take charge. With me and Cai Yi by her side, there shouldn’t be any major issues." Cai Yun didn’t want to see Zhuang Ruolan uncomfortable while still having to deal with the affairs of the mansion, feeling sorry for Zhuang Ruolan.

Zhuang Ruolan thought this was a good idea.

Yueyao naturally wouldn’t refuse. However, only when she actually took charge did she realize that what she had learned before was just the tip of the iceberg. The affairs of the mansion were extraordinarily complicated, with so many trivial matters that it was headache-inducing. Despite the trivial nature of these tasks, they had to be handled carefully; if anything like last time happened again, she would really need to burrow into a hole to hide.

While Yueyao was inside the house discussing matters with the steward’s wife, a sudden fierce wind outside almost snapped the trees. Soon, a heavy downpour began, splashing myriad sprays of water on the ground.

The summer rain came quickly and left just as swiftly.

After Yueyao had dealt with the matters, she went to the Main Courtyard. She saw Zhuang Ruolan resting in the corridor of the courtyard and smiled, saying, "Sister-in-law, the weather is refreshingly cool; I’ll accompany you for a walk outside. There’s a cobblestone path, so we needn’t worry about slipping."

Yueyao helped Zhuang Ruolan walk along the cobblestone path. The weather after the rain was pleasantly cool, walking on the path felt as refreshing as drinking chilled watermelon. The willows beside the pond swayed with the breeze, looking like millions of green ribbons. The fish in the pond also surfaced, blowing bubbles.

Zhuang Ruolan smiled and said, "Such lovely weather." It was because of the rain that it was cool enough for her to go outside. Usually, she didn’t leave the house.

Zhuang Ruolan, feeling heavy, started to feel tired after a while, "Let’s go back!"

The group turned to return, encountering Madam Tang, who had also come outside. Zhuang Ruolan glanced at Madam Tang’s obviously pregnant belly, a complex look flashing in her eyes. She had been pregnant for nearly eight months, and the midwife had said it was very likely another daughter, while Madam Tang’s baby was likely to be a son. Whether son or daughter, they were her own flesh and blood, and she cherished them all. Yet, with such a comparison, Zhuang Ruolan felt much pressure.

Madam Tang, surprised to see Zhuang Ruolan, thought they really didn’t interact much. Madam Tang intended to foster good relations but was tightly monitored by Lady Cheng when she first married, and then they were both pregnant and couldn’t visit each other much. When it was nearly safe to move around, she heard rumours outside that she was carrying a son and Zhuang Ruolan a daughter, which made her hesitant to approach any further.

Yueyao bowed to Madam Tang and called out, "Second cousin-in-law." Yueyao now referred to Ma Peng and Zhuang Ruolan as elder brother and sister-in-law, and still called Ma Yue and Madam Tang as second cousins. This mode of address reflected Yueyao’s attitude.

Madam Tang responded. She thought Yueyao was truly a lady of high standing, not only adept in managing the household but also in handling all Internal Affairs of Ma’s Mansion smoothly; the one who would marry Yueyao would indeed be very fortunate.

Zhuang Ruolan, not feeling very enthusiastic, greeted Madam Tang and then went back.

Yueyao laughed, "Cousin-in-law, each person lives their own life, don’t you think?" Yueyao had heard early that Zhuang Ruolan’s baby was another girl, but she felt that even if it was another daughter, it didn’t matter. The couple was still young, their relationship was extremely strong, and if this baby was a girl, the next one would surely be a boy. There was no need to rush.

Zhuang Ruolan knew Yueyao was trying to console her and laughed, "You girl, always speaking in halved sentences, I wonder who you learned that from."

Zhuang Ruolan was actually very moved. Since Yueyao had heard from Cai Yun that she was upset about expecting another daughter, she had come every day after managing the mansion affairs to keep her company, playing chess, talking, discussing scriptural texts, or when she was in a bad mood, Yueyao would share some gossip or tell interesting stories from books. Additionally, she would subtly encourage her, reminding her that a daughter was also her flesh and blood and just as precious. Even if it were her own sister, she couldn’t have been more considerate than Yueyao. Zhuang Ruolan appreciated Yueyao’s kindness deeply.
