Chapter 524: 199 Quarrel
Yueyao, noticing the beautiful weather, instructed her servants to set up a bamboo rattan chair under the apricot tree. She lay in the chair reading, but after a while, her eyes grew tired, and she closed them, not expecting to fall asleep soon after.
The wind blew, the trees rustled, and the leaves fell, landing on the face and clothing of the sleeping person. After falling twice, Yueyao was almost hidden beneath the leaves.
Xi Yu wanted to remove the leaves from Yueyao’s body, but Xiang Wei stopped her. Xiang Wei thought the dried, yellow leaves looked quite nice on Yueyao.
Xi Yu couldn’t agree with Xiang Wei’s peculiar aesthetic, but Xiang Wei said that removing the leaves might wake Yueyao, causing Xi Yu to hesitate. Her young mistress was busy from morning to night and rarely had the chance to enjoy a lazy nap; the thought of waking her felt cruel to Xi Yu.
Xi Yu fetched a blanket, and Xiang Wei said as she took it, "Let me do it." She feared that Xi Yu’s movements might disturb Yueyao.
It wasn’t long before Loo Ying arrived.
Hua Lei, hearing from the maids below that Miss Ying had come, felt very impatient. She didn’t understand why Miss Ying, knowing she wasn’t welcomed in the Begonia Garden, still came every day, causing such a disturbance. Even though her young mistress ignored Miss Ying, she kept coming nonetheless. Hua Lei thought Miss Ying’s skin must be very thick.
Hua Lei was irritated, but she still patiently said to Loo Ying, "Cousin Miss, my young mistress is sleeping." Seeing that Loo Ying still wanted to walk inside, Hua Lei blocked her path.
Nanny Hao, being more experienced, said gently, "Cousin Miss, my young mistress is still sleeping. It’s rare for our young lady to take a nap, and if Cousin Miss doesn’t have any urgent matters, we shouldn’t disturb her." Nanny Hao subtly hoped Loo Ying would leave on her own.
Loo Ying had developed a thick skin and ignored such scorn. Everyone in the Ma’s Mansion, from her uncle to her cousin-in-law, liked Yueyao. Since everyone liked Yueyao, Loo Ying was convinced it was right to befriend her.
But Hua Lei couldn’t hold back and said, "Our young mistress is very busy; even if she were awake, she wouldn’t have time to see you. Perhaps it’s best for you to leave, Miss Ying."
Nanny Hao was taken aback.
Loo Ying was so angry that her hands began to shake. "What did you say? Say that again!" she demanded.
Nanny Hao, realizing what had happened, tried to grab Hua Lei’s hand, but Hua Lei, seemingly unaware that she had crossed a line, continued, "I said our young mistress is busy, not idle like Cousin Miss who has time to stroll into our courtyard every day."
Loo Ying could tolerate Yueyao’s indifference because Yueyao was favored by her uncle and cousin, but she found it beneath her to endure insolence from a maid.
In the end, Yueyao was woken by the commotion caused by Loo Ying, although Loo Ying didn’t intend to wake her. It was just that Loo Ying was so agitated that she spoke loudly.
Throughout the past month, despite Loo Ying’s multiple disturbances, Yueyao had shown little emotion, but deep down she was growing impatient. Now, woken for no reason, Yueyao felt anger rising too, but observing the chaos, she managed to suppress it and said, "Cousin, there’s no need to argue with a maid."
Loo Ying, already provoked by Hua Lei and now chided by Yueyao, felt snubbed and retorted angrily, "I am your cousin; how can you speak to me like this? It’s exactly because you’re like this that you’ve raised a maid who doesn’t respect her masters." She had heard her maids say Yueyao was strict about manners and etiquette, but seeing such a maid under her, she was upset.
Yueyao surveyed Loo Ying from head to toe and chuckled lightly, "I’ve always known you’re my cousin, otherwise we wouldn’t both be living in Ma’s Mansion. It’s just that I’m very busy and don’t have time to entertain you. If it’s not important, I’d prefer you didn’t come to Begonia Garden in the future."
Loo Ying detested being reminded that she relied on the Ma Family’s charity, though it was the truth, and she couldn’t bear it. She had to put up with it when Ma Linlin said it, since Ma Linlin was the daughter of the Ma Family. But now she couldn’t hold back any longer, "You’re living in Ma’s Mansion just like me; what gives you the right to speak to me that way?" She and Yueyao both lived off the hospitality of the Ma Family; what made Yueyao any different?
Under normal circumstances, Loo Ying wouldn’t argue with Yueyao. It was just that today, Hua Lei’s mockery made her furious. A mere maid daring to mock her was intolerable.
Yueyao found Loo Ying incomprehensible, but she didn’t want to seem inferior and replied, "I’m not like you." The two of them couldn’t be more different. Yueyao was taken in by her uncle proactively, whereas Loo Ying came clinging to her mother. The difference was immense.
