Chapter 390: Chapter 137: The Dye Recipe

The wind whipped outside, and a heavy snow had fallen during the night.

Yueyao let out a loud cry and then sprang up from the bed. Nanny Hao, who was keeping watch outside, hurried in and saw Yueyao, covered in beads of sweat, obviously having had a nightmare.

Yueyao dreamed again of her past life, and of Zhou Shu. For a long time, she had forced herself not to think about that man because as soon as she did, she couldn’t control the fear. She feared to encounter the devil again in this life, to live as miserably as in her past life. Encountering that man, she wouldn’t feel safe with one female guard, let alone ten.

Yueyao lay on the bed watching the phoenix tail and orchid patterns engraved on the ceiling and let out a wry smile. Those nightmares hadn’t been forgotten; they were deeply buried by her, so they occasionally surfaced in her dreams.

Yueyao couldn’t sleep, and silently reciting scriptures was futile, so in the end, she could only dress and go to the Small Buddhist Hall to copy Buddhist scriptures. In over two months on the mountain, she had copied more than a hundred volumes of Buddhist scriptures. She understood most of the scriptural texts, but there were still parts she hadn’t fully comprehended.

As Yueyao copied and comprehended the texts over and over, both her brain and hands were occupied, leaving no time to think of anything else. By the time she finished copying a scripture, her chaotic emotions had also calmed down.

Yueyao considered her next steps. Perhaps this time was truly an accident; she had avoided it, but what would she do when Lady Mo actually made her move? She couldn’t rely on luck every time, as her luck wouldn’t always be so good. And Zhou Shu—just thinking of Zhou Shu made her shudder uncontrollably.

To rid herself of that man wasn’t as simple as just saying it. She couldn’t just rely on her maternal uncle, who might not be the same as in her previous life. If she wanted to avoid the fate of her past life, the only way was to protect herself. She had to ensure that not only her eldest uncle and Lady Mo wouldn’t dare to touch her but also that man wouldn’t dare to have designs on her.

After much thought, Yueyao wrote down a word on a blank page: "Money."

After writing, Yueyao shook her head on her own, feeling that competing in wealth with that man was simply masochistic. Even with the memories of another lifetime, she could only be in awe of that man’s ability to make money.

To make that man hesitate to target her, she had to invoke his fear. Yueyao narrowed her eyes; the only way to make him wary was to attain power and influence. Yueyao emphatically wrote down two words on the white paper: "Power and Influence."

In the face of power and influence, all the wealth in the world was useless. The question was, how could she gain such power? If she had been a man, she could take the imperial examinations. But she was a woman... and now a lone orphan at that, where could she find power?

Yueyao muttered to herself, "Take it one step at a time. Luckily, I have a head start, and as long as I’m diligent, I’ll always find a way. I’ve got several years to prepare, so there’s no rush."

Yueying came to see Yueyao alone that day, pleading for forgiveness on behalf of Maternal Aunt Chen and hoping that Maternal Aunt Chen could return to the house for the New Year. Although Yueyao held no grudge against Maternal Aunt Chen, she had no interest in pleading on her behalf.

Unexpectedly, that very afternoon, Nanny Hao came in with a troubled look and said to Yueyao, "Miss, the Great Master has ordered someone to fetch Maternal Aunt Chen back. I heard it was the Eldest Miss and the Third Young Master who went to see the Great Master, and it seemed that the Eldest Miss told the Great Master that you had forgiven Maternal Aunt Chen, which is why he agreed." Nanny Hao didn’t believe Yueyao would say such a thing.

Yueyao snorted coldly, "I never would have thought the Eldest Miss could spout such lies. She really thinks I’m soft. Make sure everyone knows that I had no idea about this."

After pondering for a moment, Nanny Hao agreed. What the Eldest Miss did was indeed improper; if she wanted to show filial piety and have Maternal Aunt Chen return, she should find her own way, instead of dragging them down with her.

When Yueying heard some rumors and wanted to come over to explain to Yueyao, Yueyao did not want to see her and instructed, "Just say I’m sleeping." She was now beyond speechless with Yueying, wondering how stupid one had to be to think of such a plan.

Yueyao took a book and lay down on the bed to read. Xi Yu entered and said, "Miss, the Second Young Lady and the Fourth Miss have come over."

Yueyao tucked the book under the blankets, "Let them in." In the recent period, Yuebing occasionally brought Yuehuan to visit her, claiming it was to alleviate her boredom. Unfortunately, Yueyao didn’t need it; she would rather spend that time reading a book.

Yuebing originally intended to accompany Yueyao while she was bedridden to slowly build a relationship, but Yueyao had always been unresponsive, treating them indifferently, which nearly exhausted Yuebing’s patience.
