Chapter 379: Chapter 134: Heavy Snow
The night of the 10th of the twelfth lunar month brought about a snowfall. Yueyao pushed the door open, only to see the landscape outside engulfed in white, with the tree in the yard covered in icicles.
Yueyao was somewhat worried; such a snowfall could possibly lead to the sealing of the mountain roads, meaning they might have to spend the New Year up in the mountains. If that were the case, they would need to conserve their supplies.
Upon stepping outside, Yuehuan, too, showed an expression of surprise, "Oh, it’s snowing."
Considering this, Yueyao said to Yuehuan, "If the heavy snow seals the mountain, we’ll need to conserve the charcoal." She wasn’t worried about food or other necessities; the items provided by the Lian Mansion would last until the end of the month, and those from Ma’s Mansion would suffice for a while. The most troubling matter, however, was the firewood and charcoal. Not only was firewood necessary for cooking, but also for the floor heating system. Charcoal was mainly used by Yueyao herself.
Yuehuan felt that Yueyao’s foresight was correct, but she thought that the most economical method would be for everyone to stay together, "Third sister, why don’t all of us squeeze in together? That way, we could save more." Back when she was studying in the Great Learning, four people used to share one room. Yueyao’s room was large enough to sleep seven people.
Yueyao shook her head, "I just asked; if we conserve, we can make it through to the month after next."
If it really came to that, squeezing everyone together wouldn’t be a problem, but it hadn’t gotten to that point yet. Yueyao also didn’t think it would reach that extent. The Lian family wouldn’t just watch them freeze or starve on the mountain; that would be too shameful for them.
Yuehuan was noticeable in her disappointment.
After completing her morning rituals and breakfast, Yueyao, accompanied by Hua Lei and Qiao Lan, went out. She was planning to head up the mountain and dressed in a snow-white fox fur cloak given by Ma’s Mansion, given the snowy conditions and difficult mountain paths.
Hong Yi complained to Yuehuan, "Miss, this cloak is worth hundreds of Silver. I didn’t expect the Third Young Lady to be so wealthy." Just a single piece of clothing cost hundreds of Silver; that was incredibly extravagant.
Yuehuan glanced at Hong Yi and called out to Yueyao, "Third sister, the ground outside is covered with snow, and it’s very slippery. It’s very dangerous to go out now. It would be better to wait a few days before heading to the mountain."
Yueyao smiled and said, "Once the snow melts, the road will be even harder to navigate. Besides, we might have to return in a couple of days. I’ll take this chance to gather some scriptures to copy."
Yuehuan still felt it was inappropriate, "Third sister, the mountain road is naturally slippery, and it’s also raining now; it’s very unsafe." Yuehuan certainly wasn’t cursing Yueyao, but the mountain roads were indeed difficult to navigate.
Hearing that Yuehuan was genuinely concerned, and even Nanny Hao disapproved of her going up the mountain today, Yueyao said with a smile, "I’ll listen to you. But if I’m not going up the mountain, I’ll have a look outside." Seeing that Yuehuan wanted to accompany her, Yueyao shook her head, "It’s cold outside, stay inside. I won’t go far, just walk around nearby; it won’t be a problem." The snow was soft and fluffy, and walking on it wouldn’t be an issue. If the water had turned to ice, Yueyao certainly wouldn’t venture out as ice would make the paths slippery and dangerous.
Yuehuan had nothing more to say.
Hong Yi felt their Miss was too easily embarrassed. Every time the Third Young Lady made a refusal, their Miss wouldn’t speak any further. Cough, following a master who couldn’t talk much and was too agreeable was really not ideal,
Yueyao, wearing leather boots, was not worried about snow getting into her shoes as she walked on the thin snow and admired the scenery.
Snow covered the trees, bending their branches under its weight. The frost-covered pine trees were adorned with icicles, resembling strands of silver hanging from the branches, making an incredibly magnificent view. A fierce wind blew over, tossing the mountain trees chaotically, and the accumulated snow and icicles cascaded to the ground. The relentless mountain wind continued to howl and ruthlessly ravage everything in the forest.
The sharp wind felt as if it were cutting into her face repeatedly, causing agonizing pain. It felt as though it could pierce through the protective layers of her clothes, bringing a pervasive chill to her body.
Yueyao, well-wrapped and generally in good health, did not feel cold. Instead, her attention was entirely captivated by the breathtaking scenery. Such a sight was rarely seen by her as she had been confined to the yard in the past; this opportunity was precious.
Hua Lei, who was not as warmly dressed as Yueyao, shivered incessantly due to the cold, biting wind, "Miss, let’s go back! The wind is strong, and it’s easy to catch a cold out here."
Seeing Hua Lei huddle herself into a ball from the cold, Yueyao said with a smile, "Alright, let’s go back then!" It seemed that the maids by her side also needed more robust training; they were too fragile like this, practically made of paper.
Hua Lei initially wanted to support Yueyao but, having stood too long, felt her legs stiffen. She slipped accidentally and fell heavily to the ground.
