Chapter 818: Chapter 818: Familiar Yet Unfamiliar People
Late at night, Jian Shen stood on the rooftop, feeling the chilly wind and observing the quiet town below that was shrouded in darkness, with not even a flicker of light or a trace of movement, as silent as a city of the dead.
Lin Xi also climbed up to the rooftop and couldn’t help but complain, "I really don’t get you experts, always standing on rooftops as if it makes you look more formidable."
Jian Shen smiled and then extended his hand to pull Lin Xi up, murmuring, "The wind is strong on the rooftop, be careful not to catch a cold."
"If you’re not afraid, why should I be? Achoo~" Lin Xi sneezed, then rubbed her nose and pretended everything was fine.
Jian Shen laughed again, "You’re still as stubborn as before. It seems that without the duties of a queen, you’ve reverted to your former self."
"Is it bad to be my former self?" Lin Xi said, arching an eyebrow.
Jian Shen didn’t say anything but simply smiled. He felt that Qian Ye before him was slowly changing back to her old self and their relationship was becoming increasingly harmonious, giving Jian Shen the illusion that he no longer had to seek out Qian Feng to lift the magic placed on Qian Ye, or perhaps the magic was gradually losing its effect.
When Lin Xi saw the affectionate look in Jian Shen’s eyes, her heartbeat accelerated suddenly, and the flutter of emotion made her immediately avert her gaze, avoiding eye contact with Jian Shen.
Lin Xi thought she just wanted to spend more time with Jian Shen, to be by his side, to make up for the regrets of their past life. She had never intended to truly let herself fall, that would be unfair to Gu Fan.
However, Lin Xi was wrong. The person she was spending her days and nights with was someone she had once loved deeply. It was impossible for her not to feel her heart stir.
When Jian Shen saw Lin Xi’s flushed face, he involuntarily moved closer, walked up to her, and took her hand.
"Oh my, what do I do now?" Lin Xi was a bit flustered, this wasn’t part of her plan.
Just then, a scream startled both Jian Shen and Lin Xi awake, and they both looked toward the small town shrouded in darkness, towards the direction of the sound.
"Has it started?" Jian Shen was ready to move, but before he left, he looked back at Lin Xi, concerned.
Lin Xi smiled slightly, "Don’t worry, I can take care of myself. Besides, I won’t run away."
Heartened by those words, Jian Shen felt a surge of conviction and said, "Wait for me. I’ll be back shortly."
Watching Jian Shen lightly step, taking off into the air and leaving with ease, Lin Xi felt as if her heart took flight with him. This was the man she had once deeply loved, a man who dominated the Martial Arts world with his courage and fearless spirit.
"Please, come back alive," Lin Xi sighed. She remembered memories from their past life, how Jian Shen had been gravely injured in battle. Knowing his time was short, he used the last of his strength to go to Qianye Country’s capital to find the one he loved most.
When Qian Ye found Jian Shen, he had already sustained severe injuries and was gasping for breath, yet Jian Shen could still manage to smile upon seeing Qian Ye.
Qian Ye rushed over and embraced Jian Shen, and as Jian Shen lay in Qian Ye’s arms, being tightly held by her in his final moments was all he needed. He died with a contented smile.
But Jian Shen’s departure became the eternal regret in Qian Ye’s heart. Qian Ye never knew exactly what Jian Shen had been through or who had killed him. She couldn’t believe that someone out there possessed Martial Arts skills superior to Jian Shen’s.
At this moment, Lin Xi’s heart was torn. She didn’t want Jian Shen to come to harm, she couldn’t bear to hold his gradually cooling body once more, and she didn’t want to be torn apart with grief and cry her heart out. Yet, she couldn’t alter the course of history.
"If I can’t change your fate, then at least let me accompany you on your final journey," Lin Xi sighed silently. Then, with her sharp eyes, she noticed something hopping around on the rooftop.
It seemed that a constable had also spotted the thing, and he hurriedly shouted, "Come here, over here!"
"A master for sure." Lin Xi watched as the figure moved as swiftly as a gust of wind on the rooftop, effortlessly as if it were flat ground, demonstrating brilliant Qinggong. Ordinary constables would not be able to catch up.
However, Tie Butou was not an ordinary constable. After sprinting, he swiftly jumped onto the rooftop and pursued the figure relentlessly. Even with his Qinggong, he couldn’t catch up. Out of desperation, he took out a pair of shackles, swinging them in his hand while he gave chase.
Aiming for his target, Tie Butou hurled the shackles, but the figure, as though having eyes in the back of its head, knew something was flying towards it and easily dodged, continuing to run forward.
"Thinking of shaking me off? Dream on," Tie Butou accelerated his pace while the shackles retracted and were thrown again, repeating the action. Each throw slowed the figure slightly and helped Tie Butou close the distance.
Once he was close enough, Tie Butou noticed that the figure seemed to be carrying someone with one arm. The culprit was undoubtedly the one he was after.
"Finally, I’ve found you. You won’t escape," Tie Butou whistled as he approached the city tower.
The constables who were already in ambush at the city tower immediately acted, casting a net down just as the figure was scaling the city tower’s walls, nimbly climbing. Seeing the net suddenly descending, the figure quickly twisted its body to evade.
Timing it perfectly, Tie Butou threw the shackles, catching the figure’s ankle precisely.
"Got you," Tie Butou tugged on the shackles, pulling backward swiftly, causing the figure to lose balance, nearly falling from the failed scaling of the wall.
Soon, Tie Butou was back on the ground, dragging the figure down as well. At the same time, other constables arrived, standing by Tie Butou’s side and drawing their weapons toward the figure.
The figure, cloaked in a cape, stood with its back to Tie Butou, silent to an unsettling degree, and everyone felt a chilling Qi emanating from it.
Tie Butou also sensed something amiss and felt a bit panicked, but he braced himself and shouted, "No matter who you are, you won’t escape tonight. Turn around and let me see your face."
The figure still didn’t speak nor did it turn, as if it hadn’t heard Tie Butou at all.
No time to wait, Tie Butou gestured with his eyes, and then the other constables circled around from both sides, cautiously approaching while tightly gripping their weapons. Despite their utmost effort to suppress their fear, they were still sweating profusely.
"Do you want to see my face?" the figure finally spoke, then it took off the cape, revealing a familiar face—it was Old Jia, who patrolled this area at night.
Tie Butou was astonished and couldn’t help but ask, "Why is it you, Old Jia?"
"Why can it not be me?" Old Jia revealed a cold smile and slowly exposed his sharp teeth.
