Those Classmates who Suddenly Disappeared -
Chapter 748
Chapter 748: 748
On the plane, Su Hui finally understood what these new colleagues did. For example, Shi Hao was initially a technician in the department, charged with computer technology. Additionally, generations of his family had made a living by fortune-telling, and he had learned a lot about it from them.
One day, Shi Hao had a sudden inspiration and programmed a fortune-telling system on his computer. He filled this system with all the fortune-telling related things he knew, such as the Eight Characters of a person’s birth, auspicious days, palm prints, etc.
In the beginning, none of his colleagues at the unit believed in it. Then, before one operation, Shi Hao predicted that one colleague would suffer a bloody disaster. That colleague indeed ended up being the only one injured during that operation.
If it had been just once, it could have been dismissed. However, Shi Hao utilized this fortune-telling system ten times, and every single prediction was correct. This might have caught Zhuo Hang’s attention, which led to Shi Hao’s recruitment into the special investigation team.
As for Yan Bing, it was said that her eyes could see strange things. She had solved many cases based on what she saw.
Hu Hu had participated in an international operation and encountered some inexplicable things. Upon his return, he was invited to join the special investigation team.
Now, Su Hui was very curious about Liu Hui and asked, "What exactly did you go through to be chosen for this team, and your position isn’t low either."
At this, Liu Hui only gave a bitter smile but didn’t answer.
"And what about you, Su Hui, what have you been through?" Hu Hu’s question piqued everyone’s curiosity because Zhuo Hang had previously stated that Su Hui’s experiences were beyond their comprehension.
At this, Su Hui could only awkwardly smile and reply, "Sorry everyone, I have to keep it a secret, otherwise my superiors will be upset."
Seeing Su Hui being so mysterious, everyone was disappointed but also more curious. Liu Hui even pulled Zhuo Hang aside to quietly ask him about it, but Zhuo Hang didn’t answer.
After three hours of flight and the sun nearly setting, night was gradually descending. Su Hui could already see a vast expanse of primeval forest through the window, and she felt an uneasy thumping in her chest.
As soon as the plane landed, there were people waiting to arrange transport for Zhuo Hang, Su Hui and the others. They divided themselves into three groups, with two people in each group and in separate cars.
Zhuo Hang and Su Hui formed one group. They set off first. Two hours later, Liu Hui and Yan Bing departed in the second car. Another two hours later, Hu Hu and Shi Hao left in the third car.
The strategy was simple. Since they couldn’t find any clues, they decided to use bait. Zhuo Hang wanted to experience the event from a victim’s perspective to perhaps figure out the problem.
While Su Hui thought this was a viable method, the sight of towering ancient trees and the densely packed forest outside the car window, and the sky turning completely dark, made her feel uneasy. She couldn’t help but say, "Zhuo Hang, maybe you’re fine because you’re immortal, but have you considered the safety of the rest of us? This risk seems a bit high."
At this, Zhuo Hang merely said lightly, "Did you just realize there are risks involved with this job?"
"Of course not, I only think that we are now united, we are a team, and you should consider the situation from everyone’s perspective." Su Hui looked solemn and felt as if Zhuo Hang was questioning her professionalism.
"Don’t worry, I am definitely not the type of person who would disregard the team members’ safety just because I am in no danger myself." Zhuo Hang declared earnestly. Despite this, Su Hui’s eyes still revealed a hint of mistrust.
Zhuo Hang sighed, "I knew I went overboard during the Yuxueyun Mountain incident. I disregarded your safety and disappointed you. But I tried my best to amend afterwards. I did a lot for you and Gu Fan. I don’t expect thanks or forgiveness, but I would like your perception of me to change a bit. At least, have a little bit of trust in me."
"Do you know why I find it hard to trust you?" Su Hui shifted her gaze to Zhuo Hang and slowly said, "Because back at Yuxueyun Mountain when your interests were implicated, you craved revenge. You wanted to seize a rare opportunity, so you didn’t care whether I lived or died. What about this time? If your interests are endangered, what will you do? Would you abandon the rest of us?"
Upon hearing this, Zhuo Hang chose silence. This silence made the atmosphere oppressive, causing discomfort and a desire to escape.
Resting her chin on her hand and looking into the pitch-black primeval forest, Su Hui sighed deeply, "Do you know why I agreed to join this team? Do you know why I came here with you for this investigation?"
"This..." A glimmer of hope sparked in Zhuo Hang’s eyes, and he stole a glance at Su Hui.
Then Su Hui added, "You’re right, I still can’t let my guard down around you. But, seeing how hard you’re trying to make up for your mistakes, it shows you’re not a bad person. So, I’m thinking about giving you a chance. Besides, I really need this job. You’re right. I do like challenging tasks."
"Thank you for giving me a chance." Zhuo Hang was both surprised and a little happy. But before he could further respond, Su Hui looked melancholic and interjected, "And, I hope you won’t disappoint me again. But I feel that you might end up disappointing me."
Hearing this, Zhuo Hang’s rising spirits deflated, "What do you mean, Su Hui? Do you still not feel at ease with me?"
"Sorry, I have some mental trauma regarding you." Su Hui couldn’t help but smile, and the atmosphere finally relaxed a bit.
Then, Su Hui thought of something vital and asked, "You’ve lived for so long, you must have experienced more than we have. You’ve never experienced anything like this special event?"
"I’ve only heard about it. Once, a small town— for some unknown reason —saw all its residents disappear overnight. The town gradually declined as there were no people left and the houses all collapsed, turning it into ruins. Since then, every time someone passes through that town, there are always one or two disappearances." Upon finishing, Zhuo Hang laughed and added, "What do you think? I simplified the story a bit, left out some things. You’re not scared, are you?"
Hearing this, Su Hui gave Zhuo Hang a contemptuous look, "Thanks for considering my mental tolerance. Also, are you sure that the missing people from that town have nothing to do with you?"
"What do you mean? Why would the disappearance of the townspeople have anything to do with me? Is my image in your heart now so tarnished?" Zhuo Hang was almost left speechless.
