Chapter 740: Chapter 740: Profligate Woman
Suppose someone exchanges one hundred million international currency for ten billion star coins, and then, turns around and exchanges the ten billion star coins back into international currency. Not counting the handling fee, labor costs, etc., this transaction wouldn’t earn much, only creating unnecessary hassle.
This person would need to earn more star coins in order to get more international currency, thus hollowing out Star Country’s foreign exchange reserve and depreciating the star coin. This is the basic theory of currency blockade. Of course, futures and other financial derivatives are also involved, but Gu Fan didn’t give these much thought.
To make more star coins in the shortest time, the Stock market of Star Country is undoubtedly the best place. International speculators capitalize on the market, sending stock prices rocketing up and earning a fortune in the process. So, ten billion star coins making a round in the stock market could turn into twenty billion, and this would exchange for more international currency.
Star Country, in order to attract foreign capital, doesn’t regulate its foreign exchange and the stock market is openly accessible to foreigners; this is the perfect opportunity for international market manipulators. The so-called financial freedom allows these international financiers to come and go as they please, giving them the chance to plunder wealth at will.
There’s another problem. Star Country has overestimated its economic situation and printed too many star coins. When these excess star coins enter the market, it leads to inflation, prompting much of these star coins to flow into the stock market.
It’s this situation that international financiers seized upon, leading them to start buying up star coins and then entering Star Country’s stock market.
On this particular day, Gu Fan, who isn’t an international financier, was thinking and realizing there were many things he didn’t understand. He doubted that he could fully guess the maneuvers of these international financiers.
Suddenly, the computer screen showed that Star Country’s stock market had started to fall...and drastically so. Gu Fan was taken aback, wondering if the international financiers had started their move.
At this time, Boss Ding also ran out of his office, exclaiming loudly, "Gu Fan, take a look! Something’s happening."
Gu Fan nodded, "The international speculators will leave Star Country’s stock market as quickly as possible, and then use the star coins they’ve earned to exchange for international currency, thus depleting Star Country’s foreign exchange reserve. This is the double kill of the stock and currency market."
Indeed, Star Country’s Stock Market plummeted all day, and the depreciation of star coins began in the afternoon. However, the fall wasn’t too severe, suggesting that Star Country was using its foreign exchange to counteract it.
Gu Fan and Boss Ding had anticipated this. If Star Country allowed its star coins to fall in value, many of the country’s companies saddled with foreign debt would collapse, and foreign investors could then buy them out at low prices, effectively controlling the economy.
This is financial war, currency war, which is ruthless and determines fate. Gu Fan watches in excitement. He doesn’t care about Star Country’s fate, as countries like it exist in plenty; but he appreciates the chance to observe the struggle up close.
Gu Fan thought about how great it would be if he could join Boss Lei’s Leida Fund; then he could truly participate. For now, he is merely a spectator.
But Boss Ding doesn’t worry about such things; as long as there’s money to be made, that’s all that matters. He became gleeful at the prospect of the mayhem to come.
"Gu Fan, once the company turns around, I’ll hire more people and you won’t have to work so hard," Boss Ding began daydreaming about the future. But Gu Fan remained focused on the computer screen. Star Country’s stock market situation was already set; it was a slaughterhouse. Next, they needed to watch the currency market.
But warding off Star Country’s currency is not an easy task. Star Country will undoubtedly use its entire foreign exchange reserve to resist, and it won’t be taken down overnight; it’ll take some time.
From Gu Fan’s perspective, Star Country is only making feeble resistance. In recent times, Star Country’s trade has suffered a deficit, earning less and spending more. Its forex may only last three days, after which the forex market will be another scene of despair.
Just by watching the numbers jump on the computer screen, Gu Fan could feel an intense confrontation taking place. He was eager to join the battle and asked Boss Ding to speak to Boss Lei about getting him into the Leida Fund.
As it turned out, Boss Ding wanted to take a look as well, and called Boss Lei on the phone. Upon hearing that Gu Fan wanted to come, Boss Lei agreed right away.
Delighted, Boss Ding immediately booked two plane tickets to Boss Lei’s location, set for departure the following evening.
While Gu Fan was overjoyed, he also couldn’t help but worry. If he’s not here, who will take care of Qian Ye? Could Su Hui and Gu Ling manage? He hoped to not return to a mess.
Regardless, this was a rare learning opportunity that Gu Fan decided to seize. He hurriedly packed his things and left work for home.
When Gu Fan rushed home, he was dumbfounded by what he saw: bundles and piles of belongings, stunning clothes, and a whole array of cosmetics and skincare products.
"This...you didn’t go shopping with Qian Ye in order to help her adapt to this world, did you?" Just as Gu Fan was fretting, Gu Ling’s voice came from upstairs: "Empress Sister, this dress looks really good on you. Try this one on too."
"Just as I thought!" smacked his forehead, feeling an impending headache.
Then he heard Qian Ye’s voice: "The clothes of this era are so pretty! Even a random dress looks better than a dragon robe. I love it!"
Helpless, Gu Fan went upstairs and saw Qian Ye contentedly examining herself in the mirror. He smiled and said, "If the Empress is happy, then it’s all good. But I have one question – you bought so many things, how did you get the money? You didn’t use your supernatural power to create it, did you?"
Gu Ling looked a little embarrassed: "Brother, I thought that helping Qian Ye was the same as helping Sister Lin Xi, and helping Sister Lin Xi was the same as helping you. So, I may have borrowed some money from your hidden stash."
Listening to this, Gu Fan nearly fainted. When he recovered, he was seething: "Sister, that’s my wife-chasing fund! How could you do this to me?"
"Sorry, given that Empress Sister is here for the first time, we wanted to play the good hosts. So, I took the liberty of deciding on my own," Gu Ling said with a look of apology, while Qian Ye rejoiced, "Little Ling is so thoughtful. How wonderful it would be if you were my real sister."
"If you like her, let her be your sister. I’m disowning her." Gu Fan said dejectedly, too defeated to even get angry. Sudden realization hit him, "Wait a minute, Gu Ling, you’ve used my secret stash, what about your own?"
"I’m helping you take care of Empress Sister here, you shouldn’t be eyeing my private money, that’s not right." Gu Ling looked as if she was saying something perfectly reasonable, while Qian Ye appeared to be siding with Gu Ling.
Gu Fan didn’t want to argue any more, so he begrudgingly accepted the situation. He said weakly, "I’m gonna be away on business for a while, take care of yourselves. Don’t make any mess while I’m gone."
Upon seeing Gu Fan resigning to reality, Gu Ling sighed with relief. She wouldn’t tell Gu Fan that she’d also used his secret stash to buy a lot of nice things for herself.
