Those Classmates who Suddenly Disappeared -
Chapter 522: Interview, Interview
Chapter 522: Chapter 522: Interview, Interview
Su Hui went to work, Gu Ling went to school, leaving Gu Fan all by himself in the house. Gu Fan, in his last semester of senior year with no classes to attend, eagerly waited for an interview call. Looking at the time, it was almost office hours.
He daydreamed about the moment when employees would open their computers, find his resume attractive, then dial his number to notify him about the interview. Ideally, it would be from a well-established company that find Gu Fan’s credentials fitting to their requirements. And he would like the job and be satisfied with the salary.
But after waiting the entire morning, Gu Fan didn’t receive any interview calls. He felt disappointed but motivated himself by thinking that perhaps everyone was too busy and would only review the resumes in the afternoon?
The afternoon passed as well and still not a single interview call arrived. He began to doubt himself. He had applied for countless jobs the day before. Was it possible that not a single company would review his resume or inform him about an interview today?
When it was time for the working day to end and his phone hadn’t rung even once, Gu Fan sighed, consoling himself with the hope of receiving an interview call the next day.
Feeling low having gained nothing the entire day, Gu Fan enquired about Lin Xi’s first day at work to cheer himself up. Lin Xi responded that she spent the entire day reviewing resumes and her eyes hurt from doing so.
Hearing this, Gu Fan fell silent, feeling miserable at the irony of the situation. He was desperately sending out resumes over here and over there, Lin Xi was so sick of seeing resumes. The disparity was huge.
At mealtime, Su Hui and Gu Ling arrived together, chatting and laughing like sisters. Seeing the feast that Gu Fan had prepared, they were overjoyed.
The trio enjoyed meals and chitter-chatter together. Su Hui naturally asked if Gu Fan received any interview calls. Not wanting to lose face, Gu Fan decided to lie to Su Hui and Gu Ling, who had no idea anyway, saying he got an interview call and had to go for it the next day.
Su Hui and Gu Ling immediately showered him with well wishes, hoping he’d secure the job.
Gu Fan thanked them, while sighing secretly about the condition for securing a job being first to secure an interview call, he had received none. Luckily, Su Hui and Gu Ling were not at home so it was easier for him to keep it hidden.
The next day, Gu Fan was caught off guard. Gu Ling had no classes, Su Hui was off work, and both once again asked him when he was heading for the interview, leaving Gu Fan helpless.
With no choice left and driven by vanity, he had to step out and pretend to attend the interview, this show off causing him trouble.
Upon his return, as expected, both Su Hui and Gu Ling inquired about his interview, their eyes filled with anticipation.
Gu Fan had prepared an excuse, saying many people applied for the job, he might not get selected and that the job was not in line with his ideal job.
Su Hui encouraged him saying, "It’s okay. Most people do not find their ideal jobs or companies at the start of their career. You need to take it slowly, there’s no rush."
Gu Fan nodded, then Su Hui gave him some advice, "Gu Fan, you have to be clear about what you want to do right now, and how far what you’re doing right now can take you in the future. Choosing the wrong occupation can lead you far down the wrong path and by the time you realize it, it may be too late to change. Some people have grand dreams but refuse to settle for less interesting jobs, and end up achieving nothing. It’s tricky to balance these, but you need to figure it out."
Feeling a bit overwhelmed, Gu Fan asked, "Sister Su, you sound very wise, have you ever looked for a job? Do you have any job-seeking experience?"
"I apologize, I’ve never had to look for a job. I serve the people in my job, as you know," Su Hui answered with a laugh, leaving Gu Fan speechless and feeling tricked.
Gu Ling immediately took Su Hui’s side, chiming in: "Brother, even though Sister Su doesn’t have job-seeking experience, she has more real-world experience than you do. She has tons of cases to refer to, you should take her advice."
"Fine, I’ll certainly listen and take it as reference," Gu Fan felt like the two females always suppressed him in this house, his status had been sinking even lower.
Quickly adding, Su Hui said, "Gu Fan, if you find a job, a lot of your financial stress will be alleviated. Could you then lower my rent?"
"Sister Su, you’ve been here for almost three years. Have I ever raised your rent? Have you ever seen such a kind landlord who can even think of lowering the rent?" Gu Fan protested, which left Su Hui feeling somewhat embarrassed. "I mean, we’re more than just the typical landlord-tenant relationship, we’re close friends."
Hearing this, Gu Fan silently agreed; their bond had been forged in adversity. So he said, "If I find an ideal job, I’ll cut your rent in half."
Gu Ling was confused: "Why half? If it were up to me, I’d let Sister Su live here rent-free. I mean, she helped first when you were in danger and when Sister Lin Xi was in trouble."
Gu Fan nodded in contemplation: "I appreciate it, and I am grateful to have a friend like Sister Su. So if Sister Su runs into any trouble, Lin Xi and I will also rush over to help right away. This is a bond forged through countless hardships. But there are certain things where lines need to be drawn, it’s complicated."
"What do you mean by that?" Gu Ling was bewildered, while Su Hui understood Gu Fan’s predicament. Gu Fan had to justify to his parents why he was letting a friend live in his house rent-free. Also, he couldn’t be overly nice to Su Hui, in case Lin Xi began to suspect something.
"Alright Gu Fan, I hope you find your ideal job as soon as possible. Then I could pay half the rent and that is such a cheerful thought. I wish that day comes soon," Su Hui’s understanding made Gu Fan happy, "Don’t worry, I’ll surely try my best. When I find my dream job, not only will I halve your rent, but also treat you all to a grand feast."
At the mention of a grand feast, Gu Ling’s eyes lit up. She was not just a little traitor but a bit of a glutton too. She immediately wished him luck: "Brother, keep it up. For the sake of our feast, go send out more resumes. I promise I will behave and not disturb you for the next few days."
Upon hearing Gu Ling, Gu Fan retorted, "So, you finally admit that you don’t behave normally."
"No way, I’m always well-behaved, just especially more so these days," Gu Ling defended, leaving Gu Fan speechless.
