Chapter 353: Chapter 353: Unusual Insect

"Everyone back up, be careful and watch your surroundings." Gu Fan was scared himself; he had no idea what dangers lurked here. His fear of the unknown caused him to retreat in his mind.

The noise was getting louder and more frequent, as if they were being surrounded from all directions.

"Run, everyone, run." Gu Fan yelled, then he grabbed Leng Le and started to move. They didn’t know what was hiding in the mist, but it definitely wasn’t anything good.

Lu Yi, Du Jun, and Qin Jia also started running. They were frightened too; their only thought was to save their own lives.

"Wait, wait for me." A local villager who was left at the end of the line couldn’t keep up with the others and tripped. He watched as his companions ran further away from him until they disappeared into the mist.

Gu Fan and the rest hadn’t run very far, when they heard the desperate wailing coming from behind, their hearts chilled instantly, "Keep running, don’t look back, try to keep together, don’t split up."

Everyone didn’t care about anything other than getting away. They wanted only to find a safe place.

After a while of running, they were too exhausted. They stopped to catch their breaths while Gu Fan kept a watchful eye on the misty surroundings, straining to hear if anything was coming their way.

Du Jun was panicking, "What should we do? We’re missing one person."

That was correct, Gu Fan’s face darkened, "I’m afraid there might be more than one missing if we keep going."

Lu Yi quickly suggested, "What should we do then? Let’s retrace our steps and go back."

"The surroundings are all shrouded in mist, we have no idea where we are, how can we go back." The moment Gu Fan uttered these words, everyone’s heart sank; they felt as though they had no chance of escaping now.

Gu Fan thought to himself that if their group was having trouble, it might mean that the other two groups were in trouble as well. Once everyone realized they couldn’t go on, Gu Fan would set off a flare to gather everyone. They should be able to safely return if they had Lin Xi and old man Tian leading the way.

That was Gu Fan’s plan but he needed to hold on, and he also needed to keep Leng Le safe. The pressure was immense.

"Everyone listen, is that noise..." Lu Yi’s words sent a chill down everyone’s spine. The increasing fear sent everyone retreating.

The sound was becoming louder and fuzzier, as if many things were crawling their way. Gu Fan gritted his teeth, turned back to check on Leng Le and Qin Jia, the physical condition of the two women wasn’t great, it didn’t seem like they could run further.

Gradually a shadow started emerging on the ground, a shadow that even the mist couldn’t cover. This shadow was closing in on them at a fast pace.

"What the hell is that?" Du Jun was scared; he already started to retreat hastily while pulling Qin Jia with him. But Gu Fan didn’t move, he knew he wouldn’t be able to outrun it, their only hope was to rely on the surrounding terrain.

Gu Fan used his flashlight to shine here and there. At this moment, Leng Le spotted a pillar and immediately shouted, "Let’s go over there for cover."

"Okay, everyone follow me." With that, Gu Fan dashed toward the pillar with Leng Le. The others followed suit.

Gu Fan first helped Leng Le to climb up the pillar, then it was Qin Jia’s turn. But Qin Jia was too slow, which made the people waiting below nervous, the shadow was closing in rapidly.

A villager from the ancient town was freaking out, "Qin Jia, you’re too slow! Are you trying to get us all killed? Get down now!" With that, he reached out to pull Qin Jia down.

"What do you think you’re doing?" Du Jun immediately stepped forward to protect Qin Jia. But the villager wasn’t backing down, several other villagers joined in, "Du Jun, you think we’re afraid of you because your father is Du Changhui? Your girlfriend is causing trouble, you also want to stop us? Get out of our way!"

"No one is touching Qin Jia while I’m here." Du Jun showed no sign of backing down, provoking several of the villagers, who lunged at him.

Gu Fan noticed this and immediately intervened, he managed to knock two men down, "This is not the time for infighting, everyone, stay calm."

"Calm your head." One of the villagers has already pounced on Du Jun, they were now rolling on the ground, totally oblivious to the approaching shadow.

"Stop fighting, get up now." Gu Fan yelled in desperation, but it was too late, the shadow swooped in on Du Jun and the villager.

Screams echoed, the villager was pinned underneath, so he was swiftly swarmed by the shadow, you could see it slowly engulfing him.

Fortunately, Du Jun was not touched by the shadow since he was on top. He quickly got up, jumped up and distanced himself from the shadow, his heart pounding with fear at the close shave.

But, the villager from the ancient town wasn’t as lucky, his agonizing screams echoed as he was gradually consumed by the shadow, until he vanished completely.

Regardless of what was happening, Gu Fan told everyone to climb up the pillar quickly. While the shadow was busy devouring its prey, they still had a chance to escape.

When Du Jun finally climbed up the pillar, he felt a stinging pain in his leg. He reached down to check and grabbed something wriggling.

"What is this thing?" Du Jun showed everyone the black bug in his hand. It was the size of an ant but at least three times bigger, with a monstrous head full of sharp teeth.

Curiosity getting the better of them, one of the villagers from the ancient town touched the bug and immediately got bitten, losing a chunk of his flesh. Screaming in pain, he lost his balance and fell off the pillar, cries of terror rose from beneath the pillar.

Lu Yi took a look and said, "Is this the flesh-eating ant we encountered in the outer regions?"

In response, Gu Fan shook his head, "Absolutely not, only the size is similar to that of an ant, but look at the head, it’s more like a horrible demon."

"I don’t care what it is, squash it." Du Jun said, crushing the bug in his hand. He found it strange, then opened his hand to take a closer look and gasped, this wasn’t a living creature at all, but a machine.

"No way, mechanical bugs, how could that be?" Gu Fan was puzzled; Lu Yi was dumbfounded. These mechanical bugs could only be created using advanced technology. Why would they appear here?

However, this was not the time to ponder. The mechanical bugs were climbing up the pillar, as if they knew where Gu Fan and the others were hiding.
