Those Classmates who Suddenly Disappeared
Chapter 231: Turning Passivity into Initiative

Chapter 231: Chapter 231: Turning Passivity into Initiative

The wedding had concluded, and Leng Le maintained her composure, still able to joke and laugh with Gu Fan without showing any signs of abnormality, finally helped her hail a cab to go home.

The taxi waiting for Leng Le was one of their own, once in the car, Leng Le immediately dialed the big boss’s number, unable to keep her restless emotions in check: "Boss, there has been a change in plans. I failed to poison Liu Yao. But by sheer coincidence, Gu Fan ended up drinking it."

"How did that happen, Leng Le, your efficiency in handling matters is deteriorating. Is it because of Gu Fan’s interference?" The boss seemed to dismiss her mistake: "Well, that’s fine too. After all, this Gu Fan is one troublemaker, constantly sabotaging our plans. It’s good that we deal with him early, it saves us a lot of effort."

Hearing this, Leng Le felt a chill, quickly explaining: "Boss, for now, I still need to monitor Gu Fan’s actions to deduce their plans, just like before when I installed a tracker on Gu Fan’s phone, it gave us a lot of valuable information, so in my opinion, we need Gu Fan alive."

"That makes sense, but I’m sorry, I don’t have the antidote. Gu Fan will just have to deal with it himself." The boss’s indifferent tone made Leng Le realize that the situation was irretrievable.

The boss added: "Given the current trends, Gu Fan would eventually have crossed paths with us. You would have had to endure a personal struggle before giving up on this relationship. Now that it’s ended prematurely, you won’t have to face such a painful decision."

"Thank you, boss, I never thought of it that way." Leng Le seemed relieved, as if she had accepted the outcome. As she hung up the phone, her face turned solemn, staring out the car window into the lamplights, sighing involuntarily.

This slow-acting poison would take effect in five to seven days, varying from person to person. Which means, Gu Fan will only have five to seven days to live. Leng Le felt a sense of regret: "I’m sorry Gu Fan, when I decided to be with you, it was certain that one of us would be unlucky, but for me, it’s better you than me."

Leng Le could think of many ways to end this relationship, but not like this, where she would have to perform a separation of life and death. The thought of it seemed all too tragic and ridiculous.

An hour and a half had passed, Gu Fan had also returned home. As soon as he walked in, the smell of alcohol filled the room, causing Su Hui to hold her nose: "Kid, how much did you drink tonight ?"

"I don’t know, but everything was top-shelf liquor tonight. I would regret it later if I hadn’t enjoyed drinking to my heart’s content." Gu Fan looked very content as he came over, Su Hui quickly kicked out her foot to ward him off.

Gu Fan added: "Do you know whose wedding I attended tonight? Do you know who the guests were?"

After hearing this, Su Hui was puzzled: "Wasn’t it your girlfriend’s friend’s wedding? I probably don’t know them, right?"

"Funny that, you know the bride, even the groom, it was Yuan Cheng, it was their wedding today." When Gu Fan spoke, Su Hui was clearly taken aback, then laughed and said: "I knew today was their big day, let’s congratulate them then."

Seeing Su Hui’s seemingly relieved manner, Gu Fan could only force a laugh: "They have tied the knot, you’ve found new love too, life goes on, no one’s gonna die if they aren’t around, just like the two of us."

"Exactly." Su Hui agreed, then playfully jabbed him: "You reek of alcohol, how much did you drink? You don’t even seem drunk."

"Of course, my tolerance is pretty high," Gu Fan patted his chest with a contented smile.

Su Hui looked skeptical: "If your tolerance is really high, why did you throw up last time you drank with Lu Yi?"

"Don’t bring that up, I was having an off day." Gu Fan tried to save face but Su Hui waved her hand: "Alright, enough of that. Let’s talk business."

"Business, that never sounds good," Gu Fan made a joke only to get a roll of the eyes from Su Hui, then she continued: "This involves Liu Yao. I originally didn’t want to tell you, but since you can get close to her tonight, I guess I’ll let you in on it."

Groaning, Gu Fan asked: "Liu Yao, is she involved too?"

Su Hui nodded: "Last time we were investigating Lengbingyang Shipping Company, we saw Yuan Cheng and Liu Yao going to visit the company’s dock, which made me suspect that Yuan Cheng was working with them. So we had someone tail Yuan Cheng, and a few nights ago he went into a nightclub to meet someone, you’ll never guess what happened next..."

Gu Fan replied immediately, "You guys didn’t barge in hoping to catch him red-handed, only to find Yuan Cheng and Liu Yao flirting in the clubhouse, which made things really awkward, did you?"

Su Hui was instantly annoyed: "What’s the point of having such a ludicrous imagination? You’re deliberately stirring up trouble, aren’t you?"

Gu Fan made an innocent expression, "You’re the one who expressed suspicion about Yuan Cheng and said that Liu Yao was involved in this. Plus, the two are engaged, so what else am I supposed to imagine? How can you blame me?"

"I was wrong, I shouldn’t have tested your imagination. Let me tell the story." Su Hui slapped her forehead, appearing remorseful. She took a moment before she could continue: "Yuan Cheng and Liu Yao went to the clubhouse separately. Our people were guarding outside, trying to see who Yuan Cheng was meeting. Maybe this person was the one behind the scenes."

"That makes sense. So, what happened next?" Gu Fan perked up, curious to know what transpired.

Su Hui’s expression suddenly grew serious, "The last report from the person tailing Yuan Cheng was that they saw him leaving, and then a little later, another person came out of the clubhouse, looking like no ordinary person. By the time I got there, the tail was dead in his car, and the only witness at the scene was Liu Yao."

Gu Fan took a moment to digest this, then sorted out his thoughts and professed his confusion: "But didn’t you say earlier that Yuan Cheng and Liu Yao had separated? How did Liu Yao get there?"

"Apparently, she wanted to deliver something to Yuan Cheng. I don’t know the details, but I do know that Liu Yao must have seen something. Just as I was about to question her, a group of people in charge of security in that area took Liu Yao away." Su Hui said this with a great deal of frustration: "If those guys had arrived a bit later, maybe Liu Yao would have told me what she saw."

Gu Fan shrugged helplessly, "Bad luck, huh. What happened later, did you ever get in touch with Liu Yao again?"

Su Hui offered a bitter smile: "No chance, Liu Yao is well protected, and she kept saying she saw nothing, knew nothing. It seems like someone coached her to say that, but I know she’s holding something back."

Gu Fan nodded in sudden realization: "I get it, Liu Yao is the breach we need. If she talks about that night, we could get some solid clues."

For this, Su Hui shook her head, "That’s what I thought, but the problem is Liu Yao’s father holds a pretty high position in this city. We can’t forcibly interrogate her, we can’t get close, and she seems to have a strong hostility towards me, so she likely won’t say anything to me."

Gu Fan frowned, stroked his chin, and fell into deep thought: "Really? If Liu Yao saw something she shouldn’t have, wouldn’t they want to silence her, or are they considering her father is an important figure in this city?"

Su Hui also thought for a moment, "When I wanted to question Liu Yao, a group of people took her away. If it wasn’t ordered by someone important, why would they do that?"

Gu Fan nodded, "In order to conceal the truth, they might have instructed Liu Yao not to speak up. But Liu Yao is the daughter of a high-ranking official, who can warn her not to speak?"

Catching the implication of his words, Su Hui furrowed her brows, "You mean Liu Yao’s father is also helping that force, which is why he could easily make Liu Yao stay silent?"

Gu Fan nodded again, his expression somewhat solemn, "Given the MO of those guys, especially the one who seems invincible, they’ll do anything to hide the truth. Even if Liu Yao is the daughter of a high-ranking official, they’d eliminate every threat. But Liu Yao is still alive and refusing to testify, it seems to say a lot."

Su Hui also thought it was highly likely, then she added, "Yuan Cheng probably joined that force, and it is most likely arranged by his father. If that’s the case, then two influential figures in the city are aiding the same force, which means the force is far more formidable than we imagined, perhaps beyond our ability to confront."

"It’s tough, it’s tough..." Gu Fan scratched his head, then turned to look at Su Hui and asked, "What do we do next? Do we just sit around waiting for our doom?"

Su Hui gave a meaningful smile: "We have five plans. The first one is for you to use your relationship with your girlfriend to get close to Liu Yao and see if she would say anything. The second is to continue pressuring Gao Lu, forcing him to spill the beans. The third plan is to wait for the insider who Zhuo Hang infiltrated to relay information. The fourth is to trap Hai, and the fifth is to investigate influential figures in this city, especially the fathers of Yuan Cheng and Liu Yao."

"Five plans, but it seems like none of them will work..." Gu Fan looked pessimistic, while Su Hui simply shook her head and smirked bitterly. It was indeed a tall order considering their adversary’s overwhelming strength.

"We’ll start with Hai, I don’t want any more threats when walking in the dark," Gu Fan said firmly, a glint of fierceness passing through his eyes.
