Chapter 1661: Chapter 1661: Mission Accomplished, Dream Fulfilled
At that moment, the volcano quieted down again, and Demon Refining Island became safe once more. However, the pungent smell in the air lingered, and the sky remained darkened by billowing black smoke.
The ground was pitted and scarred from the explosion of rocks, dust swirling in the air, and smoke spreading everywhere. Many areas had been utterly destroyed.
Gu Fan, Lin Yue, Leng Feng, and Gu Xiaojin descended to the ground, entering a forest in search of Zhuo Hang, the Boss, and Lord Xiong.
In no time, Leng Feng spotted Zhuo Hang leaning against a large tree, his expression looking somewhat fatigued.
Around Zhuo Hang were the unconscious bodies of the Demon King and Lord Xiong. But they were still breathing, likely thanks to their immortality. They’d been drained of life energy for so many years without trouble, so what’s a little fall compared to that?
Seeing everyone was okay, Gu Fan began to worry about Lu Yi and the others. The recent volcanic eruption had such a wide impact that he wasn’t sure if they had managed to escape.
Gu Xiaojin suggested they retreat to the coastal area, reasoning that if she were Lu Yi, she would have evacuated already after such a violent volcanic eruption.
Everyone agreed with this idea, except for Gu Fan, who shook his head. He trusted Lu Yi, his comrade through countless life-and-death situations, and believed Lu Yi wouldn’t leave so easily.
Likewise, just as Gu Fan trusted Lu Yi, Lu Yi also believed that Gu Fan would undoubtedly return.
At that moment, rustling sounds came from within the forest, immediately reigniting everyone’s nerves that had just begun to relax.
Leng Feng spotted a figure moving through the woods and wondered if it could be an enemy who had escaped from the Demon Refining Island Base.
The group, having narrowly escaped death, genuinely had no energy to fight another battle and silently prayed that the figure wasn’t headed in their direction.
Unfortunately, to everyone’s dismay, not only did the figure fail to avoid them, but it came closer and closer. The two sides were now on a collision course.
When the figure finally came into view, everyone froze in shock—it was none other than Lu Yi and his group!
"You made it out! I knew you’d pull it off!" Lu Yi was overjoyed and forgot himself in his happiness, grabbing Gu Fan in a tight hug.
The two groups reunited and, seeing that no one was missing and everyone was safe, experienced a surge of indescribable relief and joy.
Lu Yi and his group could hardly believe it. The recent cataclysmic volcanic eruption had rained down so many rocks that they had almost been crushed. Luckily, thanks to Lu Yi’s streak of dumb luck, they had chosen the correct path to escape.
Though the landscape around them had been devastated to ruins by falling rocks, they emerged entirely unscathed—it was almost surreal.
Once the volcano calmed down, someone had suggested retreating, but Lu Yi had insisted on returning to their original location, determined to wait for Gu Fan, fully confident that Gu Fan would come back.
At first, the others were annoyed by Lu Yi’s stubbornness, thinking it was a luxury just to keep themselves safe under the circumstances. Besides, the earlier crisis had left everyone fleeing in such chaos that no one was sure where they had ended up.
Compelled by Lu Yi’s persistence, everyone reluctantly followed him back to the previous spot, though they had no sense of direction. By pure chance, they had wound up here.
Through a series of coincidences and twists of fate, the two groups had miraculously reunited—how could anyone not be overjoyed?
Gu Xiaojin marveled aloud, "Uncle Lu Yi, you’re incredible! My dad always said you wouldn’t abandon us, that you’d insist on waiting for us to return because you trusted he’d fight his way out."
"Of course! Your dad and I have years of camaraderie," Lu Yi said with a smug grin.
But the others weren’t having it and mercilessly shot him down: "Don’t praise him too much. Do you even know why the volcano erupted like that?"
At those words, everyone cast a meaningful look at Lu Yi, silently suspecting this might once again be the work of this doomsayer.
Sure enough, it turned out that Lu Yi had offhandedly remarked earlier, "Even though the volcano’s eruptions are usually controlled by the Demon Refining Island Base, there’s bound to be one time when they can’t rein it in." And then, well...
"Oh, for crying out loud." Gu Fan and the others were at a loss for words. They had excluded Lu Yi specifically to avoid the negative effects of his doomsayer tendencies, only to find that even when separated, his words could still influence their fate.
Was there truly no escaping this doomsayer? Everyone wore expressions of resignation and despair.
Lu Yi offered a consoling remark: "Come on, guys, don’t be like this. I know I misspoke this time, but I promise I’ll watch what I say next time."
"You always say that, but next time you can’t help yourself," everyone groaned, their faces etched with exaggerated suffering, as if they’d endured a great injustice.
Suddenly, someone raised an idea—if they still fell victim to Lu Yi’s jinxes even when apart, didn’t that mean all the unlucky events earlier might also be connected to him?
One person complained that he had been taking a nap alone in his room when the bed frame suddenly broke, leaving him with a sore backside. He speculated that Lu Yi, in the adjacent room, might have jinxed it by saying something like, "The bed looks fine, but who knows how sturdy it really is?"
Another person chimed in with their grievance. They recalled hanging their bedding out to dry, confident it wouldn’t be a problem under the beaming sun. Yet within half a day, the weather took a sharp turn—clear skies were replaced by dark clouds, wind, and rain. Surely, somewhere in another city, Lu Yi must have said, "The weather’s nice now, but it could rain any moment."
Hearing this, everyone nodded in agreement, feeling it was entirely possible.
Lu Yi was so exasperated he nearly exploded, snapping, "What nonsense are you spouting? Just because something unlucky happens, you all pile the blame on me? I don’t accept this! You have no proof—this is slander, and it’s making me very upset!"
Seeing Lu Yi’s righteous indignation, the group decided to drop the subject. With a laugh, the matter was put to rest.
Not only had they rescued Leng Feng, but they had also unexpectedly saved the Boss and Lord Xiong. The mission was a complete success; it was time to retreat.
Given how violently the volcano had erupted and the destruction it wrought upon Demon Refining Island, the X Legion was already in chaos, far too busy to deal with the intruders.
Thus, Gu Fan and his group faced no obstacles on their return journey. They smoothly reached the coastline and reconnected with Jie.
Soon after, Jie received the signal and quickly arrived with reinforcements, piloting a ship to pick up Gu Fan and the others before hastily leaving Demon Refining Island.
But the first thing Jie said nearly made Lu Yi roll his eyes so hard he fainted from anger.
"Good grief! What on earth did you guys do to turn Demon Refining Island into that state? Was it Lu Yi again? Didn’t I tell you to keep your mouth shut?"
