Those Classmates who Suddenly Disappeared -
Chapter 1647: Time to Test Your Luck
Chapter 1647: Chapter 1647: Time to Test Your Luck
The group waited another day in the forest, keeping an eye on the volcano’s next eruption and observing the Demon Refining Island Base.
Gu Fan realized that during this entire day, nobody had entered or exited the Demon Refining Island Base, leaving them clueless about the location of the entrance.
What should they do? Time was running out. Could this really be a matter of taking it one step at a time? Everyone looked to Gu Fan, as if silently asking whether they should change the plan.
Suddenly, the Demon Refining Island shook violently again. The volcano erupted, thick smoke billowed, and the air was filled with an unbearable stench.
Lin Yue was ready to take action but was stopped by Gu Fan; the timing wasn’t right—they needed to wait a little longer.
Though Lin Yue outwardly seemed unwilling to listen to Gu Fan, he didn’t say anything and waited patiently.
After some more time, the Demon Refining Island quieted down again, and the dense smoke began to disperse.
This is it! Gu Fan believed the time was right and immediately called for action.
Gu Fan, Lin Yue, and Gu Xiaojin followed the direction of the drifting smoke. Using the height of the ancient heavenly trees and a flock of birds flying overhead as cover, the three soared into the sky, rising higher and higher.
With such a long distance and the large flock of birds filling the sky, even if the Demon Refining Island Base’s surveillance spotted Gu Fan, Lin Yue, and Gu Xiaojin rising from the ancient trees, they most likely wouldn’t identify them clearly—they might assume they were birds and dismiss them as insignificant.
The three exchanged glances, and Gu Fan took the lead, diving into the rolling smoke first. They swooped downward toward the Demon Refining Island Base.
Everyone else was completely unable to see what Gu Fan, Lin Yue, and Gu Xiaojin were doing or where exactly they were—only silently praying for their success.
At this moment, deep within the smoke, Gu Fan couldn’t see anything. Even his goggles had turned pitch black, and no amount of wiping helped. Judging the distance was impossible; he could only grit his teeth and press forward.
What now? Without knowing his position, blindly plunging downward could easily result in him crashing straight into the molten lava. Meanwhile, the rolling smoke was unbearably hot, making him highly uncomfortable.
At that very moment, the smoke thinned slightly, and the closer he got to the Demon Refining Island Base, the less smoke there was.
Gu Fan wiped his goggles and was able to vaguely make out some of the surroundings. He realized he was about to collide with the Demon Refining Island Base and stopped abruptly.
Simultaneously, Lin Yue and Gu Xiaojin did the same, halting their dives just in time.
The three clung to the wall of the Demon Refining Island Base, at its highest point—close to the mountain’s summit—remaining perfectly still like three stone statues. They were confident this was a blind spot out of surveillance reach.
Gu Fan touched the wall of the Demon Refining Island Base and noted its texture, a mix of metallic and stone-like material. It was undoubtedly crafted from materials of an ancient Super Civilization.
"Interesting. Where exactly is your entrance?" Gu Fan muttered as he felt along the wall, moving forward. He refused to believe the base was entirely sealed—there had to be ventilation somewhere.
Sure enough, Gu Fan discovered a vent and was overjoyed as he crawled inside.
"Seriously?" Gu Xiaojin exclaimed, awestruck once again. Lin Yue, however, remained composed and was the second to follow through the vent.
Because the vent was located high up near the mountain’s summit and, with the Demon Refining Island Base being surrounded by extensive surveillance, anything approaching would usually be detected. As a result, this vent was negligently guarded.
Inside the vent, Gu Xiaojin spotted a small bug. Before crawling down through the vent, she carefully controlled the bug to fly around the room below, confirming that it was free of surveillance equipment.
Once inside the Demon Refining Island Base, everything became much easier. Gu Fan, Lin Yue, and Gu Xiaojin donned the enemy’s uniforms and descended from the vent into an empty room, then began confidently strolling through the corridors.
Just imagining it was thrilling—Gu Xiaojin mused that if the Demon King discovered that the heavily guarded Demon Refining Island Base had been breached so effortlessly, he might become furious.
Wait a second—Gu Fan was the one infiltrating this base, and technically, the Demon King and Gu Fan were the same person. Would the Demon King be angry or proud?
While Gu Xiaojin was lost in her thoughts, they soon encountered another challenge: they didn’t have passes, meaning certain areas were inaccessible.
What to do? Should they knock out a few people, take their passes, and lock them up? Gu Xiaojin suggested this, but the idea was quickly dismissed.
The place was massive, and if Gu Fan hadn’t located Cold Wind by the time those knocked-out individuals awakened, they would inevitably create a commotion, potentially exposing their infiltration to the entire Demon Refining Island Base.
Lin Yue frowned. Without passes, navigating the base was nearly impossible—they had to come up with another solution.
"Of course, there’s a way," Gu Fan said with a faint smile. He spotted a group passing by, their leader using a pass to open a door, and the team filed through one by one.
Gu Fan, Lin Yue, and Gu Xiaojin quickly followed this group, entering the door alongside them.
Using a pass to open doors certainly worked—it was like using a key—but human laziness dictated that when multiple people passed through the same door, it was improbable for everyone to repeatedly swipe their passes.
Gu Fan capitalized on this tendency, trailing behind the pass-holding group. With over ten people in the group, no one noticed any anomalies.
Good, the pass issue was resolved. Now, how would they find Cold Wind?
Gu Fan recalled how Li Shi had tracked him down at Tower of Darkness when he was imprisoned there.
The first step was locating the cafeteria—it shouldn’t be difficult. During mealtime, everyone headed to the cafeteria, and following the crowd would naturally lead them there. Moreover, with a large gathering, it would be even harder for anyone to notice Gu Fan, Lin Yue, and Gu Xiaojin.
In a place this large, with so many people spread across different areas, most individuals barely interacted and hardly knew one another. This anonymity worked in favor of Gu Fan, Lin Yue, and Gu Xiaojin’s infiltration.
So, Gu Fan, Lin Yue, and Gu Xiaojin boldly enjoyed a meal in the cafeteria, finding the food surprisingly decent. They wondered if Cold Wind might be receiving preferential treatment as well.
After all, Cold Wind was the Demon King’s son. No matter how ruthless the Demon King was, he likely wouldn’t starve Cold Wind. Thus, someone had to be delivering him food—by monitoring the cafeteria staff and tracking the kitchen workers, they could follow the trail.
Indeed, they spotted someone carrying a substantial amount of food toward a specific location. Judging by the elaborate presentation, whoever was being served was either an important guest or a highly valued prisoner.
Gu Fan, Lin Yue, and Gu Xiaojin immediately began shadowing this individual, silently praying for extraordinary luck to lead them straight to Cold Wind’s location.
