Chapter 1527: Chapter 1527: Pain

Time flies; three months have passed since the fall of Dark City, but the influence of Organization X still spreads across the world. Xue Wang and his remaining subordinates have disappeared, perhaps quietly amassing strength in the dark.

The Hunter’s Guild is even more determined, calling on various forces to exterminate Organization X. They must not be allowed a chance to make a comeback—if not utterly eradicated this time, there would be no opportunity left.

In these brief three months, the businesses and assets of Organization X have been destroyed, their bank accounts frozen, and many of their members arrested, suppression against them unprecedented.

Su Hui has taken over Zhuo Hang to become the new leader of the Special Investigation Team. Under her command, the team is fully committed to tracking down traces of Organization X.

Su Hui is busy with work, setting out early and returning late, and sometimes she hardly ever goes back home. While busy, she also worries about Gu Fan.

For three whole months, Gu Fan locked himself away at home, sitting on the sofa, turning on the television, and then staring vacantly at the news.

Lin Xi’s departure seemed to have taken all Gu Fan’s vitality with her. Now, Gu Fan is dispirited and listless, indifferent to everything outside, spending days doing nothing but eating, sleeping, watching TV, and going to the bathroom.

Su Hui glanced at the time and couldn’t put her mind at ease, so she handed over her work and immediately left the office, hurrying home.

Pushing open the door, as expected, Su Hui saw Gu Fan slumped on the floor, leaning against the sofa, foolishly staring at the advertisements playing on the television, his eyes so empty as if all vitality had been lost.

Su Hui sighed inwardly, then drew the curtains to let the sunshine pour in.

Gu Fan was indifferent to it, the warm glow seemingly unable to awaken his now cold body, as he simply picked up the remote to change the channel.

Su Hui, being a police officer, had seen many incidents and knew that time could ease the pain. She believed that Gu Fan was strong and could bounce back, but the question was that this was also taking too long—it had already been three months.

After losing someone important, most people could get through it, could return to work within a week, suffering in pain while continuing to live their lives. But Gu Fan was not most people. Why couldn’t he pull himself together? Why couldn’t he return to normal life?

At that moment, Gu Ling walked out from the kitchen, seeing Su Hui, she immediately showed a pitiful expression: "Sister Su, you’re back, that’s great. I’ve been so busy, please wash this bowl, I still need to clean the bathroom."

"Is he still not doing any housework?" Su Hui looked at Gu Fan and then at Gu Ling, feeling that the situation was challenging.

Gu Ling shook her head: "Now, we have to take turns cooking for him, or else he could sit there all day long, without eating or drinking."

Su Hui asked another question: "Have Lu Yi and Jie visited?"

"They have, unclogging toilets, fixing plumbing, changing light bulbs, even doing several days worth of laundry for their brother. If possible, I wish they could give my brother a bath—he really stinks." Gu Ling said, covering her nose.

Gu Fan seemed to take this comment in and responded indifferently: "I know. I’ll take a bath today."

"There’s a reaction!" Su Hui and Gu Ling were both surprised and delighted, feeling as if Gu Fan was about to bounce back immediately, hopeful for him to say another word.

Soon enough, Su Hui and Gu Ling were disappointed again, as Gu Fan continued to stare blankly at the television, without uttering another word.

"Alright, I’ll go wash the dishes." Su Hui rolled up her sleeves and charged into the kitchen to face off with pots and pans.

Gu Ling went to clean the bathroom, entering while covering her nose—the entire house seemed to be tinged with Gu Fan’s foul smell, especially the bathroom.

After a while, the two women had finished all the housework and were feeling sore and tired. Work used to be divided among three people in this house, now it was just two, adding to their burden was Su Hui’s heavy workload and Gu Ling preparing for graduate exams.

Su Hui and Gu Ling sat on either side of Gu Fan, using every available moment to accompany him. Perhaps their care could expedite Gu Fan’s journey out of sorrow.

The three of them watched TV together, ending up with boring advertisements, so Su Hui chose to play a popular TV series for Gu Fan to watch.

As luck would have it, the episode was about a story of two lovers parted by death, startling Su Hui into hastily changing channels, then passing the remote to Gu Ling with a look that signaled avoiding dramas, as they were bound to involve romantic plots not suitable for Gu Fan.

Gu Ling thought it over and decided to try some news instead; surely, the news wouldn’t be mushy. But, luck was peculiar for Gu Ling because the news featured special holiday coverage of many people getting marriage certificates.

"This..." Gu Ling was somewhat panicked, sparing a glance at Gu Fan and noticing that his demeanor seemed even more dispirited.

"Let’s just switch back to advertisements." Su Hui found a channel running ads, hopeful that this time there would be no trouble with the commercials.

But this advertisement featured a newly debuted actress—who happened to be named Lin Xi.

"Big brother, big sister, what do you want from me?" Su Hui complained bitterly, quickly turning off the TV in sheer resignation.

With no TV to watch, Gu Fan still stared blankly at the screen, his eyes bereft of life as if his soul had long since vanished with the wind.

Su Hui quickly interjected, "The weather is nice today; how about we two beauties go shopping with you?"

Hearing this, Gu Fan’s wooden face finally showed some reaction, followed by a sigh: "That was the same excuse Lin Xi used when she wanted me to go shopping with her."

Su Hui and Gu Ling felt a blow to their hearts. Why did it seem that under their help, Gu Fan was not reviving but instead becoming more despondent?

"Let’s do this; I’ll take you to a boxing gym. You haven’t exercised in a long time." Su Hui hoped that exercise could distract Gu Fan and restore his vitality through physical training.

Gu Fan’s despondent demeanor barely managed to muster a weak retort: "No need. I’m now immortal; I don’t need to exercise my body. Plus, I don’t need to take care of myself. I’ll always stay young without limits. You, however—especially you, Sister Su—you’re nearly thirty, right?"

Was he really exposing her age like that? Su Hui squinted her eyes, sizing up Gu Fan, wondering whether it might help if she beat some sense into
