Those Classmates who Suddenly Disappeared -
Chapter 151 Too Many Coincidences
Chapter 151: Chapter 151 Too Many Coincidences
"Alright, we can continue now." Gu Fan put down the kettle and smiled at the corners of his mouth. "Sun Yi disappeared in the hotel. The hotel we stayed in was also arranged by you, arranged very well."
Du Jun immediately explained, "Wait a minute, this has nothing to do with me. You also watched the surveillance video when Sun Yi disappeared. I had nothing to do with it."
Gu Fan nodded, "Yes, that video was very strange. Sun Yi’s actions before the disappearance almost misled us, making us suspect a supernatural event rather than intentional human interference."
"What do you mean, I don’t know what you’re thinking, Gu Fan." Du Jun pretended to be confused.
Gu Fan laughed coldly, "Do you remember after we watched the eSports competition that night, I, Lu Yi, Jie, and you were excitedly discussing it? As a result, we chatted for a long time in the hotel lobby, and Sun Yi went to bed early because he wasn’t familiar with our topic."
Du Jun immediately interjected, "Yeah, he went back to his room first, then Jie also returned, and Sun Yi was still there."
"That’s not right!" Gu Fan shook his head and went on, "I asked Jie. When he got back, Sun Yi was already fast asleep, and Jie didn’t care. He didn’t know Sun Yi well and didn’t bother saying hello. Jie also went to bed. By morning, while Jie was still asleep, Sun Yi had already left. Jie didn’t notice. That is to say, after Jie returned to the room, he never really saw Sun Yi. The person who was sleeping might not be Sun Yi at all, but someone else."
Upon hearing this, Du Jun looked as if he had been struck by lightning, his face growing increasingly pale.
Gu Fan sighed, "If I’m not mistaken, Sun Yi was attacked as soon as he got back to his room. Then, someone disguised themselves as Sun Yi and slept in his place. You took advantage of the fact that Jie and Sun Yi were not familiar with each other, and it was late. Although there was a risk, the likelihood of success was higher. As for that video, because of the distance, we could only see a person wearing Sun Yi’s clothes, similar to Sun Yi in height and shape, and with a hat on. If the strange video showing Sun Yi’s actions before his disappearance was prearranged, everything makes sense. The eighth coincidence is that Sun Yi disappeared in the hotel arranged by you. Bear in mind, neither the front nor back door surveillance video of the hotel captured Sun Yi leaving at that time."
Du Jun gritted his teeth, his eyes full of anger. Just as he was about to retort, Gu Fan cut him off, "I know you won’t admit it, so don’t bother talking. Let’s move on to the ninth coincidence."
"Wu Fei and Chen Ying, a couple, disappeared in a haunted house of an amusement park. At first glance, it seems to have nothing to do with you. " Gu Fan feigned a difficult expression, and then laughed, "But, conveniently, on the day I skipped class to accompany the heartbroken Su Hui to that amusement park, we ran into Wu Fei and Chen Ying. We inspected the haunted house and found that although the maze inside was complex and heavily monitored, as long as the paths were slightly altered, it was possible to perfectly evade all surveillance. The square where the haunted house is located has two cameras, one of which pointed at the entrance of the haunted house, but was blocked by a parade float at that time. That means Wu Fei and Chen Ying were targeted the moment they stepped into the haunted house. What made me suspicious was that a camera pointing to the road towards the haunted house managed to break down, leaving us clueless as to whether Wu Fei and Chen Ying had ever safely left the haunted house."
Du Jun shook his head, "What you said has nothing to do with me. Are your coincidences done?"
"No, the coincidences are not over, because Su Hui found out that your father’s Yongxin Group is behind this amusement park. This is the ninth coincidence." When Gu Fan said this, his gaze became sharper, his tone heavier, "I always wondered if the staff of the haunted house did it. Have they been working here for so many years just to wait for Wu Fei and Chen Ying? At first, it seemed unlikely, but then I realized your father was behind it. So, they’ve been waiting here for Wu Fei and Chen Ying for so many years. Don’t forget, the police investigated the amusement park exit surveillance, and did not see Wu Fei and Chen Ying leaving the amusement park. So I’m wondering, why did Wu Fei and Chen Ying skip class to go to the amusement park that day? Did you give them tickets?"
Faced with Gu Fan’s intimidation, Du Jun was silent for a long time and then gave a faint smile, counterattacking, "Gu Fan, you’ve mentioned so many coincidences so far. Then let me bring up one too. Don’t forget the connection of Zhou Yu and Xia Yue’s disappearance to you. It was your operation, not mine. If you insist on using these coincidences to accuse me, then you can’t escape either."
"Yes, that’s the ... " Gu Fan paused for a moment, then started counting with his fingers, "Right, that’s the tenth coincidence I wanted to bring up. You also know that we planned to use Zhou Yu as bait, to draw out the snake and shift our strategy from passive to active, but there were three changes in the plan. The first was that Feng Jin and Shen Yun secretly hooked up. They ran into Shen Yun’s respectable boyfriend in the theater and chaos ensued. So we had no choice but to split into two groups, one following Zhou Yu and the other mediating the situation, which spread us too thin. We had to ask Jie to come and help."
Du Jun sneered, "Don’t forget, from start to finish, this has been your organized operation, your command, it has no connection to me whatsoever. Stop pushing everything onto me."
In response, Gu Fan shrugged, "Why would I try to shift blame? I will certainly have a basis for my accusations; I have no interest in wrongly blaming someone."
Du Jun looked at Gu Fan with contempt and said, "Keep spinning your theories then, I’d love to see just how much more you can fabricate."
"Sure, just sit back and relax, I’ll keep spinning. My narratives are guaranteed to be interesting." Gu Fan said confidently, seemingly unbothered by Du Jun’s response. This sent Du Jun into a state of unease.
Gu Fan paused for a moment before continuing, "I had a solid plan in place. Everyone had a tracking signal so we could know their whereabouts. I have to admit that the device you supplied was pretty good. We were perfectly capable of keeping up with Zhou Yu. But then, the second unexpected event occurred. Due to the first unforeseen circumstance, we had to call Jie over to help us. This left Lu Yi, who was in charge of monitoring everyone’s tracking signal, a bit overwhelmed. Then, a couple accidentally crashed into the van where Lu Yi was, which led to an argument between them. To protect his girlfriend, the male driver started fighting with Lu Yi, which left Lu Yi unable to continue monitoring the tracking signals."
Du Jun immediately countered, "Both the first and second unexpected events have nothing to do with me. Feng Jin was flirting with Shen Yun, who already had a boyfriend. Then they just happened to run into Shen Yun’s faithful boyfriend at the movie theatre. As for Lu Yi, that was outside of my control. It was him who decided to argue with them, otherwise, they wouldn’t have started fighting."
In regard to this, Gu Fan nodded in agreement, "Yes, it appears that the first and second unexpected events had nothing to do with you. However, the third incident is directly related to you. We were following Zhou Yu, ensuring his safety. Then, a bank nearby had a robbery, which caused a great disorder and made many roads blockaded. We couldn’t get near Zhou Yu, and Lu Yi was busy fighting, completely unaware of Zhou Yu’s situation. When the robbery ended, and Lu Yi’s fight also finished, we found that Zhou Yu had already drifted far from us."
"So what’s next? You mentioned this incident is related to me, but where is the connection?" Du Jun asked arrogantly, thinking that Gu Fan couldn’t create a plausible story anymore.
Gu Fan simply smiled calmly and continued, "Later we found out that the bank robbery was actually a drill, and guess what, the bank is owned by your father’s company. How’s that for a coincidence?"
Upon hearing these words, Du Jun’s face darkened considerably. Anxiety spread over his countenance as he struggled to find his breath.
Gu Fan moved right along, "The tracking device you provided is pretty good. But once charged, it only lasts for about three hours. By a curious coincidence, it stopped working just when Zhou Yu vanished. I suppose that could be considered the eleventh coincidence. I presume you have no objections to that."
Du Jun didn’t respond. Instead, he puffed out his chest, lifted his head, and started staring back at Gu Fan defiantly, as if to say ’what are you going to do to me?’.
The defiance stirred unease in Gu Fan. It looked like Du Jun had a card up his sleeve. But at this stage in the game, Gu Fan had no choice but to forge ahead. He needed to break down Du Jun’s defenses bit by bit and uncover the truth. In order to achieve this, he couldn’t lose ground. Drawing himself up, he met Du Jun’s gaze steadily, his expression stern: "Du Jun, it’s alright if you still don’t want to admit your involvement, but I refuse to believe that there could be so many coincidences. Too many coincidences are often the result of careful planning."
"There are plenty of coincidences in the world. You can look it up yourself. I say it again, if cases could be solved with conjecture, what would we need evidence for?" Du Jun’s voice held firm, defiant to the end.
