Those Classmates who Suddenly Disappeared
Chapter 134 Big and Small Strange Fish

Chapter 134: Chapter 134 Big and Small Strange Fish

Closer, getting even closer. Gu Fan and his group’s hearts were racing as if they were going to jump out of their throats. They gritted their teeth, slowly drifting in the current, hoping that they wouldn’t get involved in the chaos caused by the town’s burning gate.

All they saw were numerous flashlights casting their beams haphazardly, their shadows swaying violently. Some were on the shore, some were on rubber rafts, and others who had fallen into the water were in a state of panic, causing ripples. Worse still, gigantic monstrous fish would suddenly leap up from the water’s surface and swallow people whole with one gulp.

Since they were downstream, the blood did not flow towards Gu Fan and his group. Only when they got closer did they realize the severity of their predicament. Unfortunately, they couldn’t stop themselves from being swept towards the danger.

Realizing the gravity of the situation, Gu Fan started shouting, "Row backwards, quickly!"

Everyone moved quickly, rowing with all their might to get away from the dangerous area. But unfortunately, the current had increased and they were not adept at rowing. They could only watch helplessly as they were swept along, growing frantic with desperation.

Since they couldn’t change the situation, they did what they could to slow their drift. As Gu Fan was pondering, a small monster fish jumped out of the water, its sharp teeth bared as it lunged towards him. Luckily, it missed, causing Gu Fan to break out into a cold sweat.

"Oh my god!" Gu Fan shone his flashlight and found that more of these small monster fish lurked beneath the water surface. Worse, these creatures would hurl themselves out of the water at the sight of a human face.

Some of the fish missed and splashed back into the water. Some of the unlucky ones landed on the raft and were promptly dealt with by Gu Fan and his gang.

Now, Lu Yi realized something terrible - numerous tiny monster fish were biting the bottom of the raft. Given their sharp teeth, they would soon puncture several holes in their raft.

"Everyone, get to the side now, get ashore!" Gu Fan cried out in despair, rowing towards the sides. But they were surrounded by water; where could they find the shore?

Gu Fan knew that falling into the water meant becoming a feast for these monster fish. They had to deal with the current problem first. He instructed Du Jun to use an electric stick, and as soon as it touched the water, the electric current caused the surrounding tiny monster fish to be electrocuted.

They had survived another crisis, but what were they to do next? The rubber raft was riddled with holes and wouldn’t hold for long.

Seeing these circumstances, Gu Fan glanced at the chaotic and dangerous area ahead, gritted his teeth, and shouted loudly: "Full speed ahead, charge forward, it’s our only hope."

"Alright!" Everyone agreed with Gu Fan’s plan, for moving forward was their only hope of survival.

A large monster fish emerged from the water, writhing in agony. It was being torn apart by many small monster fish. Where it swam, blood followed, staining the underground river red.

Not only that, but Gu Fan also noticed how several smaller monster fish were pursuing another wounded small monster fish. He immediately understood something - these monstrous fish would prey on their injured peers. God knows how many of its kin a small monster fish needed to devour to grow into a large one.

The raft was quickly reaching the dangerous area, and at the same time, water began seeping into its perforated body. They were running out of time and had no option but to take the gamble.

Because the townspeople had blocked the river with ropes, their rubber rafts crowded together, creating a platform-like structure on the river as they removed the coffins. This setup had taken up much time.

However, when attacked by the sudden onslaught of monster fish, the townsfolk were caught off guard. As they fought off the creatures and tried to carry the twelve coffins away, they were significantly delayed – which in turn allowed Gu Fan’s party to catch up.

Especially when one of the coffins fell into the water, numerous people dived in sequentially to fight off the monster fish, making enormous sacrifices to protect the coffin and ensure its safe shoreward delivery.

Gu Fan’s team saw it. The area where the townsfolk held their ground had steps leading up to a shore, on which stood a doorway that led to a suspected location.

"Oh god, they found it!" cried Professor Luo in distress. He wanted to storm over immediately, and so did Gu Fan. He didn’t see any coffins, meaning the last coffin had been pulled ashore, and all had been transported away. They had come too late.

When Gu Fan’s team charged over, Lu Yi was the first to jump onto the enemy’s raft. But because his landing was too heavy, he almost flipped the raft, nearly capsizing it and causing him and the townsperson on board to fall into the river.

The rafts were all tied together with ropes, providing some stability. Otherwise, Lu Yi’s forceful jump earlier would have landed them in a great deal of trouble.

With Lu Yi paving the way, this gave the others the confidence to jump onto the other raft without hesitation, utterly disregarding their present conditions.

"My God, this is so stable." This time, Lu Yi was using less jumping force. She moved from one rubber raft to another as if she was walking on flat ground, taking one step at a time towards the riverbank. Others were doing the same.

Suddenly, a person emerged from the water, scream, and was pulled back in. The townsfolk were fighting intensely against the monster fish, suffering many casualties. However, their net casting proved to be effective. With one throw, they could catch many small monster fish, or drag a big one ashore.

At times, Gu Fan could see the water surface violently disturbed, as two large monster fish bit at an injured one. The mutual slaughter among these monster fish had given them a slim chance of survival.

With hundreds of townsfolk and twelve coffins, many rubber rafts were used and connected. The countless monster fish, however, bit and broke most of them.

The townsfolk were either fighting on the banks, on the rafts, or accidentally falling into the water. The scene was chaotic. What Gu Fan could not understand was why they stayed. They could reach the shore, but was it to save the comrades who fell into the water, causing more to fall, or to hold on to the rafts as their only way back?

Right now, Gu Fan didn’t want to ponder too much. Their primary task was to reach the shore. But the problem was, Professor Luo was old and slow. Xu Haowen and Teacher Liu each supported Professor Luo and pushed forward. Qin Jia and Lin Xi, being females, were not as agile, inhibiting the group from making a full sprint.

Just as they readied themselves, an incident occurred. Lu Yi, having slipped accidentally, nearly fell into the water. Just as she thought it was a false alarm, a big monster fish appeared, opened its mouth and bit down.

"You’ve got to be kidding me, I am the target." Lu Yi reacted quickly and lifted her shield in front to block. The monster fish bit the shield instead of her head and was caught in an awkward position, unable to close its mouth.

Fearing that Lu Yi would be dragged in, Gu Fan and Jie held Lu Yi back. Before the monster fish could wriggle free, the townsfolk who had caught up stabbed it several times.

Any injured monster fish, regardless of size, would end up as prey for others. Therefore, they were not worried that this fish would return, as it had its hands full.

"Go, hurry up!" The townsfolk seemed to be gathering. They were not targeting Gu Fan’s group but, surprisingly, appeared to be offering protection.

The small monster fish would occasionally leap out of the water, biting onto limbs without loosening their grip. The larger monster fish would spray a tentacle-like thing, clinging to people and pulling them into the water. Most of these dangers were blocked by the townsfolk.

Gu Fan did not quite understand the actions of the townsfolk. They were meant to be enemies, so why would they act this way?

Every now and then, Du Jun would stick his electric rod into the water. With one swift dip, many monster fish were eliminated. The injured fish triggered a mutual slaughter among their peers, lightening the burden for everyone.

Due to the large concentration of fish in this area, many were stunned by the electric rod. The townsfolk then rushed forward, using nets to catch and knives to inflict wounds, reducing the threats from the monster fish to the minimum.

Upon seeing this, Lu Yi couldn’t help but exclaim, "Damn, this thing is so useful. Ouyang Jin, do you have anything else? Could you give me one too?"

"If I had extra, I would have used them." While Ouyang Jin was saying this, he used a spade to slap down a small monster fish that had leaped out of the water.

After relentless efforts, they were very close to the shore. Su Hui was the first to leap over, and after a couple of punches and kicks, she drove away the people guarding the bank, creating a safe landing point.

Next, Teacher Liu and Xu Haowen, under the group’s cover, finally got Professor Luo to the shore. Behind them were Qin Jia and Lin Xi.

"Alright, let’s head for the shore." As Gu Fan finished speaking, he saw Du Jun still attacking the underwater monster fish with his electric rod. With an unrelenting fury, Du Jun relentlessly plunged his rod into the water. The buzzing sound sent chills down everyone’s spine.

Gu Fan was getting a little anxious. "Save some electricity. We might need it later."

Hearing this suggestion, Du Jun immediately put away the electric rod and charged for the shore with the rest. Thanks to his efforts, the swarm of monster fish, which would have been a threat, was almost completely neutralized by the rod.

The riverbanks were lined with nets that had caught countless monster fish, and injured fish floated on the water surface. Even those that managed to escape bore injuries and inevitably fell into a mutual killing spree amongst their own kind.

Although they won this battle and were relieved, they had no intention of celebrating in each other’s arms. The townsfolk surrounded Gu Fan and his group unfriendly and seemed ready to capture them again.

They received help from the townsfolk because they shared a common threat. Now that the threat was gone, the townsfolk turned against them once more. The fickleness of their relationship was truly lamentable. Why couldn’t they just put their past enmity aside with a smile?
