Chapter 1299: Chapter 1299: Hard to Distinguish Friends from Foes
In the maze, Gu Fan, Lu Yi, Ouyang Jin, and Irina from the Hunter’s Guild were wandering aimlessly, completely lost.
With food and water about to run out, and now having fallen out with the mercenaries, they reckoned the mercenaries were scouring the globe to hunt them down.
Trapped and being hunted made Gu Fan and his group feel terrible.
Ouyang Jin could hardly walk any further and couldn’t help but complain, "Lu Yi, what am I supposed to say to you? You just had to offend a woman. If it weren’t for your reckless talk, would we have been chased by mercenaries?"
"How was I to know that this artificial intelligence would get angry just like a woman?" Lu Yi regretted it too and secretly vowed never to offend any creature or thing that looked like a woman ever again.
But Gu Fan disagreed, "If they were determined to mess with us, it wouldn’t have been just you, Lu Yi. They would have targeted anyone, so don’t take it to heart."
"Yeah, that makes sense!" Right as Lu Yi was getting a bit excited, the murderous looks from everyone around him startled him into realizing that their glances were a warning not to get too carried away.
Ouyang Jin couldn’t help but ask, "Where in the world did Su Hui, Lin Xi, and Zhuo Hang end up?"
Gu Fan also felt deeply worried, "I had intended to draw the enemy’s attention, to let the three of them find a way out. But looking at the current situation, they’ve probably been discovered too. But it’s fine, the three of them together are certainly safer than us."
Irina came to understand, "You wanted to concentrate the strength of the few strongest among us to quickly find a breakthrough, right?"
Gu Fan nodded, "That’s right. Leading so many people would inevitably slow us down, so I had them go ahead, effectively putting our hope on their shoulders and betting on them."
Upon hearing this, Lu Yi sighed, "It’s an ideal plan, but the reality is cruel. Even if Sister Su finds the way out, we’re now separated."
Gu Fan bitterly shook his head, "I’ve considered that, but what’s worse than being separated is being trapped here for a long time. Thus, finding an exit remains the top priority."
Irina had another doubt, "We managed to replenish food and water previously, but Su Hui and the others didn’t. How long can they last?"
"Before Su Hui and Lin Xi set off, I gave them a bit more food and water, so there’s no need to worry about that." Having said that, Gu Fan took out a protective talisman, showing a relieved expression, "This was given to me by Miss Lin. There’s a bit of her supernatural power in it, and as long as we’re close to Lin Xi in a certain direction, she will sense my position. Then, we might be saved."
"That’s great, Miss Lin really thought things through," Lu Yi couldn’t help wanting to fiddle with the protective talisman, but Ouyang Jin stopped him, "Please, you’re already a doomsayer; don’t jinx us any further."
Lu Yi immediately protested, "What do you mean? Even though I’m a doomsayer, it has nothing to do with my hands. You’re smearing me here."
At that moment, Irina heard something and immediately shushed them.
Everyone quickly covered their mouths, holding their breath and listening intently, nervously hoping the mercenaries wouldn’t catch up too quickly.
Footsteps approached from far and near; the inevitable had occurred. Some mercenaries stumbled upon Gu Fan and his group and immediately shouted, "They’re here, they’re here."
"Damn it, really hunting us down relentlessly?" Gu Fan promptly led everyone into a sprint as gunfire sounded from behind.
Lu Yi cursed, "This is too much. Are you really shooting at us?"
"Sorry, we’re all just trying to survive. Sacrificing one of you could save all of us." The mercenaries found a self-justifying reason, chasing and shooting without caring whether it was Lu Yi, as long as they hit their mark.
A member of the Hunter’s Guild was shot dead, falling to the ground.
Irina, enraged, turned around and returned fire. Her marksmanship was decent, and she immediately killed two of the pursuing mercenaries.
Although the two parties had fallen out before, they had not yet reached the point of slaying each other. Now that war had broken out, with both sides firing at each other and bullets zipping back and forth.
Another Hunter’s Guild member was shot, but was only wounded. Ouyang Jin aided him as he walked, his face twisted in pain, but still had the energy to curse, "Damn mercenaries, lacking any honor. I was right not to join you guys back in the day."
Upon hearing this, everyone on the brink of a life-and-death battle couldn’t help but laugh, finding some amusement amidst the bitterness.
Under Irina’s leadership, the group had already taken down the several mercenaries who had chased after them. Some lay on the ground crying out in pain, others bled profusely, barely clinging to life.
"Alright, we need to get out of here quickly!" No sooner had Gu Fan finished speaking than they heard numerous running footsteps approaching, and his expression instantly darkened.
Sure enough, another troop of mercenaries appeared from another direction, and they didn’t hesitate to aim their guns at Gu Fan.
Under Gu Fan’s lead, the group quickly turned a corner at a crossroads, dodging all the incoming bullets.
"Chase them down, don’t let them escape!" The mercenaries pursued relentlessly, and the noise of battle drew in mercenaries from several other directions.
In this unfamiliar maze, with nearly a hundred and fifty mercenaries splitting into several groups and weaving through the complex labyrinth, they posed a constant, significant threat to Gu Fan and his team.
As Lu Yi ran, he couldn’t help but say, "If Xiaoling were here right now, we wouldn’t need to fear anyone."
Gu Fan also began to miss Gu Ling’s powers. But distant waters can’t put out a nearby fire, and they could only rely on themselves now.
Just then, a group of mercenaries appeared around the corner. They were shocked to see Gu Fan rushing towards them, unsure of what Gu Fan and his team were hastening to do.
Gu Fan and his companions, seeing that these mercenaries bore no hostility, were also puzzled.
They later found out that these mercenaries had gotten separated long before and had not been instigated by the artificial intelligence Xiaolan to kill Lu Yi for a way out. They still wanted to follow Gu Fan.
But at this point, Gu Fan had become wary of mercenaries, fearing they might claim to be comrades but then stab him in the back at any moment.
These mercenaries genuinely wanted to prove they harbored no ill will, but regretfully, they had no substantial convincing power.
"What should we do?" Gu Fan was in a bind; he didn’t want to let down those who were truly loyal to him, but he couldn’t let his guard down either.
