Those Classmates who Suddenly Disappeared
Chapter 1227: What You Fear Comes

Chapter 1227: Chapter 1227: What You Fear Comes

As they drew closer to Dark City, Gu Fan occasionally jumped onto tall trees to look far ahead, gazing at the dark, eerie town and its towering black buildings, his heart constantly filled with unease.

It wasn’t just Dark City, but also the movements of the United Army, which always kept an appropriate distance from the path of the River of Survival — Gu Fan and his group’s route, essentially having the United Army draw the attention of bloodsucking creatures wherever they went.

Lu Yi couldn’t help but exclaim, "Thanks to the United Army, we’ve had some peaceful days lately. I really want to thank them someday and shake their hands."

Upon hearing this, everyone frowned. Although Lu Yi’s statement wasn’t a curse from the doomsayer, it always felt like something bad would happen.

That evening, just as everyone was preparing to rest well, suddenly a series of furious roars sounded, feeling as though many tigers were approaching, which panicked everyone. They immediately grabbed their weapons and aimed in the direction of the noise.

Quick silhouettes dashed through the woods, initially only in front but, as they got closer, the figures increased and began to spread out from the front to the sides, seemingly trying to encircle Gu Fan and his group.

Far from sitting ducks, Gu Fan and his team immediately retreated and began running quickly. Meanwhile, those covering the rear crazily fired their guns, shooting wooden bullets wildly, forcing the bloodsucking creatures behind to slow their pace to avoid the lethal bullets.

The noises around them grew louder and the situation increasingly dire. Gu Fan felt as if armies were chasing them from behind and on both sides, forcing them to accelerate even more.

At that moment, another group of people appeared, other mercenaries who, upon discovering Gu Fan and his party, came over to check.

The group quickly recognized the emblems of the two mercenary corps and expressed their confusion, "You are from the Lightning Mercenary Corps and the Flame Mercenary Corps? What are you doing here?"

"Well, we got separated from the main force on the first day." At this point, that was all they could say, as they couldn’t reveal it was a covert operation.

Gu Fan also added, "It seems like a lot of bloodsucking creatures are chasing us. You should run with us."

The other group assessed the situation, noticing countless figures in the trees. If not for the mercenaries retreating while returning fire, these figures could have caught up in an instant.

The other group quickly nodded, "Okay, follow us. We’ll lead the way and meet up with the main force." After saying all this, they picked up the walkie-talkie to communicate with the headquarters.

Instantly, the hearts of the people from both the Lightning and Flame Mercenary Corps sank a notch; they were out of options and had to join the United Army bravely.

Before all the mercenary corps had come to Dark Primitive Mountain, there had been an agreement to act collectively and follow a unified command.

Lightning and Flame could use getting lost as a reason for not moving with the main force, but once they rejoined, there would be no good excuse to slip away again, especially in such circumstances—it was even more crucial to meet up with the main force.

All they could do was to follow that group to the main force, thinking about finding an opportunity to break away later. It was certainly better than exposing their tracks and intentions now.

Along the way, Ouyang Jin couldn’t resist saying, "Congratulations, Lu Yi. Your wish has been fulfilled; you can thank those people and shake hands with them now."

"How would I know this turns out to be a curse from the doomsayer?" Lu Yi felt very wronged. His wishes to get rich never came true, but whenever he had a bad premonition, it invariably did. It was just too unfair.

The guide people sped up their pace while shouting urgently into the walkie-talkie, "We’re almost there, cover us with fire!"

The walkie-talkie replied, "Understood, hurry up."

Gu Fan was thinking about what to do after meeting up with the main force when he heard a thunderous rumble from behind. He didn’t dare to look back, afraid he might see a multitude of bloodsuckers.

"Wait for me, wait for me!" Some who were lagging behind and running slower screamed in despair, firing their guns frantically, only to be snatched away and carried off with a wail.

Gu Fan clenched his teeth in determination, pushing himself to the limit while also keeping an eye out to see if anyone was missing. As he ran and counted heads, he found everyone was there, and finally let out a sigh of relief.

"Look, there’s the camp." Someone shouted, and everyone’s morale was boosted as they dashed with all their might towards it.

The camp was well-prepared; various weapons fired fiercely at the pursuing bloodsuckers, and the dense bullets poured down like rain, causing the creatures to howl and tumble in agony.

"We’re saved," the group arrived at a large position, and after ensuring it was safe, those who were out of breath almost knelt down.

As Gu Fan gasped for air, he observed the surroundings, seeing many people armed with guns, either preparing ammunition or carrying the wounded, with the smell of blood and gunpowder hanging in the air.

Urgent shouts came one after another, "Enemy attack, hurry into the positions, quick."

Gu Fan watched as many people fortified the position and fired outward, not knowing how many Gatling guns were firing at once. The deafening sound even drowned out the wails of the bloodsuckers outside.

At that moment, seeing the overwhelming firepower of the United Army, Gu Fan truly believed nothing could breach their defenses.

"My God, we’re saved." Lu Yi finally breathed easier, and his words silently resonated with everyone.

Su Hui checked the time; five minutes had passed, and still no bloodsucker had broken through the line. It seemed they could have a peaceful night’s sleep.

Another five minutes passed, and the United Army continued firing from their positions, as if the surrounding bloodsuckers were endless, impossible to exterminate completely.

Someone explained that it was night now, the domain of these bloodsuckers, so almost every night, they continuously attacked the position, which had become a normal occurrence.

Hearing this, everyone thought there was nothing to worry about; the place was guarded by several thousand well-armed people with strict defenses, and it seemed unlikely the bloodsuckers could gain much.

Just then, a bloodsucker pounced onto the position, pinned down a person, and bit through their neck.

"Bastard!" The others opened fire together, turning the bloodsucker into a swarm of bullet holes. So many bullets hit its heart, and with a final scream, the creature fell dead, turning a deathly pale color.

Although this bloodsucker was killed, the sudden incident terrified many and reminded everyone that there was no absolute safety.
